I really love little personable lamps and think they're such a cute addition to any lolita or lolita adjacent room. So many people only have the basic overhead lighting and I feel it's such a shame.

If one is into 3D retro wallpapers both 2 major Victorian era embossed paintable wallpapers producers are still around and have some old Victorian patterns in offer

Lincrusta - expensive as fuck but still the most durable wallpaper on the market - it hardens over time and after 2 years from production it's as hard as wooden paneling. It's made out of wooden flour, and some gel with linseed oil. You have seen it in most bourgeois Victorian apartments in the Europe and in the US. Featured extensively at walls and ceilings of Winchester "Mystery" House, Rockefeller Mansion, numerous French residences, British houses, Buckingham Palace, bars, pubs, restaurants. Also used at ships - it was used on Titanic for 1st class rooms. Cheaper alternative for plastering large areas. After painting and hardening it gains leathery look. Invented in 1877 by a dude who brought us Linoleum. That wall covering is rumored to save structural integrity of numerous buildings in London during Blitz bombings of WW2. Was used in bathrooms and hospitals too. Environmentally friendly (unless you paint it with some harmful stuff). It's creamy white, you have to paint it yourself. It's the most "3D" wallpaper around and allows very thick and detailed patterns.

Anaglypta - few times cheaper embossed paper-cotton wallpaper, paintable. Invented by dude who was a partner of dude that invented Lincrusta. Also seen in numerous Victorian mansions of both continents.

If you have seen any 19th century building owned by rich fucks and built or redecorated post 1877 you most likely seen at least one of these wallpapers. Seeing both used at the same time was also common.

I've been super into making filet lace decor lately, it's so relaxing and dainty. Just find a b&w grid pattern and do 4 triple crochet per black square and for the white squares you chain 3 and then triple crochet 3 stitches away from the first.

If you like dado panels - cheaper but much softer Anaglypta also have them in offer. Nowadays Anaglypta dado is made out of vinyl. Picrel is almost 9 times cheaper per meter.

People over youtube often ruin nice already properly dark looking dark wood furniture by painting it all black in the cheapest way. The effect is mostly... well... yes, cheap as fuck.

Well, if your goal is to have expensivish dark wood furniture turned to cheap looking one – great success!

If you can't live without painting stuff your but want to avoid it looking like a primary schooler repainting ancient fresco with poster paint at least make an effort to buy or rent (yes, it's possible) proper equipment. Or just outsource whole work to person that understands wtf must be done.

Tho think twice before turning dark wood into black especially if you are an instawhore as all other instawhores already have rooms full of crappy paint jobs done on furniture. So having dark wood instead of black actually makes you stand out. You like attention, don't you?

Yes, in case of items in good condition it's painful. I can kinda understand if someone does it with stuff from the '70s or never (there are still few companies that makes vintage style furniture even in Europe as far as I'm aware) in rough shape but only if it's stripped properly before painting. Painting over existing coat of lacquer is not gonna stick for long and would start chipping off quickly. Anything older is a crime in my eyes. In case of older furniture they often have finish that is natural like shellac finish or wax and you can strip old finish in some cases without any need for sandpaper and the reapply fresh layers. Holes in furniture can be filled with wood fillers. You can use them to even reconstruct missing fragments.

If you cannot live without black furniture - there are shellac finishes that are very close to black - they could give you mirror shine "french finish" if you are patient.

Is there any Western brand that makes stuff similar to romapri's style? Where it's frilly and girly but in a more mature way and with better quality/craftsmanship than the cheap sanrio merch hoarder type rooms you usually see with super cutesy decor.
I would really like to find a Western brand since it's a bit troublesome to ship furniture internationally and also they don't have much stuff for queen size beds

i never found any good western stores so i gave in and bought romapri and had it shipped over. it cost a ton and some furniture arrived broken so i wouldn't recommend it. taobao actually has furniture like this though that looks pretty nice but you'd have to send it to get fumigated for bed bugs if you're paranoid.

Look for used (coz few times cheaper than new)

French provencal style (typically white finishes but can also find natural wood)
Italian "retro" furniture (tho they are mostly naked or dark wood color)

You can also find local producers in many central European countries that have close in style designs or can manufacture furnitures for you. But don't expect IKEA prices. Especially if you want something better than MDF as material.

As for stuff made out of fabric I belive there is market of used vinatge/luxury duvet covers etc. but I never looked into it myself. You can also order stuff from seamstress etc.

No idea if there are any interesting producers in for example France, but they are most likely be much more pricy than Polish producers. For sure I know that Italian producers are expensive as fuck in regard to new items. Tho there is a lot of their used stuff in many antique shops. I found once a seller in Poland having whole damn huge storehouse full of Italian retro style furniture made back in the '70s and '80s. Stuff was in excelent condition.

I’m pretty happy with how my attic room is coming along except for the white panelled ceiling. It’s a low ceiling so it’s visible in coord pics I take in there, and it’s just an eyesore in general. What can I do to make it more congruous with the rest of the (late Victorian themed) room, without making it inaccessible for idk technical stuff? There’s also a chance I’ll end up moving to a different room in a few years so something impermanent or relatively neutral would be best. I was thinking of some kind of draped fabric, but wouldn’t that get really dusty really fast? Plus it would be awkward to install around the lamp.

People ”upcycling” beautiful old wooden furniture by painting over it is a huge pet peeve of mine. Mostly I see people painting it grey or pastel colours, but black sounds horrible too. Sometimes they remove or cover up the decorative woodwork to “modernise” it as well. If you want plastic IKEA looking shit then why ruin perfectly good vintage furniture when you can easily find secondhand plastic IKEA shit? It would probably be cheaper, too!

I was instantly thinking about fabric. You can minimize dust by using an air purifier and vacuuming daily. Alternatively make some contraption used only while taking photos you can fold and cover in plastic sheet protecting it from dust.

Calling IKEA stuff plastic is a nobilitation for IKEA. I have seen their kitchen set that had bulged surfaces of doors after a year of standing in a kitchen). Kitchen furniture that can't stand a year of typical kitchen moisture...

I hate this too. Their excuse is always either "at least this way it will be used" or "it was damaged". If I am not mistaken you can sand and refinish furniture that has scratches. I hate the white chalky paint the "upcyclers" use. Screw em, I hope their pillow will always be warm no matter how many times they turn it.

use citrustrip/another paint stripper first if possible, then after using that you can go in with a sander.
a lot of people who "fix" furniture by painting it awful flat colors are not knowledgeable about correct paint application so it often isn't prepped correctly and comes right off

while i think things like shabby chic are cringe, the entitlement itt is cringe. people don't need to justify "ruining" furniture, they own it. if you wanted to preserve it so badly you should have bought it first.

It's the same feeling I get when I see a beautiful historic building demolished and replaced by a soulless concrete box I'm sorry I didn't have the spare cash around to buy a whole building, or all of the antique furniture. A lot of people who do upcycling have businesses. They sometimes get first pick of what comes to secondhand shops/thrift stores, and then buy lots of furniture, so it never reaches the thrift store show room where we can see and buy it, then they upcycle it and sell it for a huge markup.
Also people will do this to the furniture they get handed down, instead of selling it or giving it to a thrift store as is.

I make sure to buy everything on my wishlist when it comes to lolita, and it's a lot cheaper and easier to buy rare brand than it is to find certain pieces of antique furniture. Lolitas tend to take good care of their pieces and are much more likely to sell it than toss it in the bin. At least it gets circulated inside lolita spaces then, even if it goes for more than 1000$. At least I have the opportunity to buy it. Antique furniture is much more likely than rare lolita pieces to fall into the hands of people who don't know its value and don't appreciate it as is. It might get upcycled, it might be burned, it might be tossed into recycling or a landfill, if lucky it might end up in the hands of an antique dealer or a thrift store out of upcycler's hands.
I still feel sad when someone damages an extremely rare dress or decides to dye it. I know they own it and can do whatever they want to it, but that's not the point. I would feel much better if they took good care of it and wore it for a long time, at least then it's appreciated as is.

My personal recomendations for decor in dank spooky victorianish style:

same with "brass" instead of "wrough iron"

Some nice basic stuff costs around 20 USD, more elaborate sets of tall neogothic candelabra would be of course much more expensive. But you are paying for something literally indestructible under normal conditions. Heck some of this stuff might be used as weapon in battle.

If you are a fan of vintage looking wicker furniture as seen in 1960s Addams Family TV series:

"wicker tiki furniture"

It may help a lot if you are in possession of lighter toned wooden furniture and want to introduce more "unusual feel". They also could look very harmonic (to surprise of many) with simple basic geometric shapes of IKEA style furniture even in white color when you choose them carefully.

I think these items are out of fashion right now mostly so unless they are some extra collectible and elaborate 19th century stuff 20+ USD for smaller items and ~120 USD for larger look very reasonable even in my Europoor eyes. I think they entered mainstream fashion somewhere in the 60s and end of their popularity was around eraly-mid '80s. Among goths they were still popular in the '90s and into the '00s.

They had many "exotic" items in their house like Polynesian and African art pieces. The point that decoration crew had in mind was probably to give a nod to broad set of relatives and family background created for that TV series' lore. In this edition Gomez is an investor and owner of some sort of plantation neighboring by some cannibal tribe if memory serves me well. Some of that approach toward decor was also used in 1990s New Addams Family TV series. But they went much more toward stereotypical old victorian decor with much much lesser presence of any "exotic"elements.

Also such decor was very much eccentric in early 1960s and made it to western decor trough that decade mostly in counter culture circles as it were times of hippies and growth of interest in occult and non western mysticism. Were non typical for average white christian American family. That decor looks totally different in our modern eyes than it looked back then. There was some more interest and also certainly more fear toward "the outside world" (non USA).

Addams family was created back in 1930s and it's humor and satire was very much rooted in culture of 1930s America, that culture been evolving and was different by the 1960s. Just like nowadays early '90s movie adaptations were set in reality that differs from modern. When they were made Satanic Panic was still roaring in many places of the world and dressing all black was a good enough reason to send you for psychiatric evaluation by your parents. Wicca was used for shock value in mainstream TV series too.

To complete victorianesque stuff that rarely is being disputed in this threads let's mention crystal glass - preferably lead free variant so we don't give ourselves addition brain damage on top of the one we get from browsing 4chan. Photo is an example of lead free glass.

What's wrong with leaded crystal? It's leaching lead to stuff stored in stuff made from it starting within literal minutes if stuff has certain pH. So storing your spirits in vintage or even modern leaded crystal decanters is a big no no. Unless you hate your organism of course. Storing vinegar in leaded decanters is an outright lead poisoning wish.

Like many Hollywood and British movies did. They barely ever made close to how real interiors looked back in that era up until pretty recently.

Yes, they are pretty busy by modern standards but by Victorian era they are almost empty. And by standards I mean what we see in actual photos from back then. Modern arrangements even inside historic buildings like mansions etc are also much less "intense" as many interior furniture, decor items etc get sold/lost/destroyed/relocated to museums over the time.

As for paneling you can DIY it from MDF elements or just put molding frames and paint them different color. That would be a low cost solution with still the look and feel of the era.
