ITT we share and discuss tips on how to get our hands on cheap materials and "waste".
So far what i've found on this board is:
>go and ask a stone mason for a headstone that has not been paid or broken/waste stones
>go to a concrete plant next to a river and ask for river stones that are too big to be used as gravel
>go to a lime-sand brick factory and ask for clay and soile they have extracted

What other way are there to get your hands on cheap materials?
Which other waste materials could be useful and be acquired cheaply?

Sounds great, like what fabricators for example?
I heard you can get nice marble and franite from china for super cheap because shipping businesses will ship it almost for free to get their ships weighted down by its load and can therefore load more lighter goods. But im not sure on how to get any of that or where to turn?

Estate sales. I've been to more than a few and walked into garages/shops with tons of materials, tools, and projects in progress.

They are also great for sourcing high quality items at low prices. Everything from cleaning products at a dollar a bottle to very nice pieces of vintage furniture for next to nothing. I have an expandable solid cherry dining room table that I got for $40 because it was so large it needed to go in a truck and no one else that showed up was interested. Picture related, from Google.

If Habitat for Humanity operates in your area they likely have a ReStore. That is their thrift store. People and business donate building supplies, tools, and tons of other things to them and things that can't use in their buildings end up there. Light fixtures, switches, outlets, cover plates, doors, windows, cabinets, furniture, nuts, blots, nails, paint, sinks, toilets, bathtubs, washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, etc. My even gets Amazon returns because there is a warehouse on the same street and it is cheaper to donate it for the tax write-off then it is to ship it back and resell it.

Link to the applicator in that pic-

https://www.stewmac.com/luthier-tools-and-supplies/supplies/glue-and-adhesive/applicators-and-pipettes/glue-syringe/

That place tends to be pricey so shop around...but also note that unlike syringes for water thin or slightly viscous liquids, that one has a knurled and threaded collar/ferrule that clamps the needle tip onto the barrel so it can't pop off under the force needed to pump thick material through it.

There aren't any holes in the end of caulk tubes when you buy them, so you can make the hole whatever size you want. If you need the hole to be smaller than what cutting the tip off gives you, pierce the end with a small nail or something instead. Hell you can even use a thumbtack to make a super tiny pinhole if you wanted.

Not exactly the same thing, but there have been times I've used a pastry bag (the canvas type that takes a liner) for caulking.
Because the caulk gun, the plunger sticking out, and the tip, all of that was too long for me to get an angle on where I needed.
You can get a mess of different tips, too.

We have a Red Lion G308A210 HMI on a machine at work with touchscreen issues. The touchscreen will work for one minute and then become unresponsive for 10-20 minutes, then it may work for 1 or 2 minutes again and then it dies again. Power cycling it does nothing. The machine manufacturer wants 12.000€ for a replacement, with a 6.000 euro "core" refund when we return the broken one. Some questions:
Is it really the touch panel? The fact that its somewhat intermittent makes me think it may be a board issue. I don't want to fuck with it and then the manufacturer not accepting the core back if the touch panel replacement doesn't work.
The HMI uses a CompactFlash for the software. If we buy a used/refurbished one from Ebay, same exact model, will it boot the program with the old CF card in it and just work or does it require further programming?
Is replacement of the touch panel a matter of peeling the front "sticker", replacing touch panel (I think it's not fused to the LCD) and then applying the "sticker" again?
Will heat on the edges of the touch panel work temporarily?

>i thought you said it wasn't the touch panel?

I mean, it could. But meh. 200 euro is cheaper than 3000 euro (for a used/NOS one) or 6000 euro (for a manufacturer approved solution

Replacing with something different it is not really feasible as it runs a complex program for a 100.000 euro rotary die label cutting machine and it communicates with a Mitsubishi PLC with multiple controls. Rewriting the software from scratch is a great undertaking. Upgrading to a newer Red Lion HMI could work, and I could probably upgrade the program to run on it myself (I would only have to create a new button to open the sidebar that triggers with the menu hardbutton, and maybe fix some graphical stuff due to different screen resolutions) but I'm officially just a machine operator that unofficially does mechanical and low voltage electrical maintenance on them, and undertaking such a project is way above my paygrade. And would not lead to any improved future prospects here, as were a small and I can't go any higher. Maybe a 50 or 100 euro tip from the boss but meh.

FWIW, lightly heating (50-60 degrees) the screen borders with a heatgun on low has mostly fixed the problem (only a couple of missed taps now).

I'm not surprised if heat had an effect, thermal expansion or solder issues were the first thing I thought of. It could just be a bit of solder that needs reflowing. Is it a resistive or capacitive touchscreen by the way?

All operators use fingers and not stylii. It's just old, and due to the nature of the machine's operation, you have to tap the display constantly Once the label rolls finish, cut the web and tape the ends, tap to deflate the rewind mandrel, remove rolls, insert empty cores, tap to inflate rewind mandrel, tap to advance the web, glue the web to the cores, tap to restart operation. Speed adjustment is required pretty often and that happens on the screen too using a slider instead of a rotary encoder.

Average silicone gun will do but get some sort of vacuum. Slightly over fill the mold and put it in the vacuum. As it pulls the air out, the silicone gets drawn into the mold. If the part is small enough, you can get away with sous vide bag and pump.
Molding is something to look up on youtube so you can see and visualise how it works.

You find a board manufacturer, buy a P&P and reflow oven, and piece it together with parts you find off digikey, or go on JLC and overpay for them to assemble it for you, then you contract with local materials science or plastics company (every town I've lived in there's always one within a 30 minute drive) and have them make the cases, or if you're dirt cheap bite the bullet and order them from China and accept the company is gonna reuse the molds themselves or sell them off to someone who will, then again If it's a small run they'll make em out of aluminum so it won't last long anyway, then you piece the whole thing together with threadforming screws. If your line actually takes off, same story, but you're gonna wanna drop a ton of cash on water-cooled steel molds and etch the PCBs yourself, the price per unit will drop on components on their own.

Depends on want you want to do what clients need and how big your ladder is. gutter cleaning, junk removal and vent/dryer cleaning never go out of style.
Power washing sucks IMO but people pay more for soft washing.
Drywall repair is easy money and hanging TVs is cake too. You can make 50 or more an hour doing any of those things provided you can set up the work yourself.
Get new customers from service apps like handy, thumbtack, Angie’s list. Fuck paying for leads though, take sone job from them for dirt pay then talk to the customer directly about cutting out the greedy corporate middleman a build a relationship from there.
Learn to make professional looking invoices, includes notes and terms and anything that might protect you from an asshole customer.

The majority of people come here at some point for a fantasy DIY thing they have but never go through with it. But it's nice to talk about it and find out how plausible it would be if you actually follow through with it.
In my case, i have a friend who's interested in the same dumb idea as i am
Idea is to get a castle built basically, plain and simple. To avoid sounding or looking autistic we just say manor and dont have the idea to add in fake battlements and towers, just a set of buildings that naturally wall itself off from the outside world with a courtyard in the center, to house a few families worth of people (my family, his, and possibly some other friends)
it'd have a reasonable square footage per person, and if my career and inheritence goals become fulfilled i should be able to afford as much as 700k for building the home, he might be able to afford 250k-500k depending on if he ever manages to create a successful business, and additional rent could be collected from any other roommates living with us
lets say a construction crew builds the walls and foundation out of limestone or granite bricks, and professionals do the electrical, plumbing, and heating work, as well as the roof frame, could I feasibly construct the floors (going up to 4 stories tall at the highest), install the roof tiles, and rennovate the rooms using mostly lumber and plaster? I'd have help of course, but I'd be concerned that a full time job would take away the time i need to properly construct it.

Read the laws first, then. Here in germany, for example, you can dodge most of the permit requirements if you know how. Won't bore you with the details, but it's really simple stuff like declaring a house a shed for the first seven years, or feeding your grass cuttings to your children's pets to legally be considered a farmer.

And if like my family, you start from an old house that
a. isn't part of residential zone development
b. isn't under special protection because some historical person lived there or something similar
you can basically do whatever you want as long as the roof height and the length along your plot's borders remain the same, and legal requirements for firefighting and sewage are complied with.

Can't tell you what your local laws are like, of course, but starting from an existing farm would probably be easiest, legally speaking. Maintain the main building, place some "sheds" around it, then rebuild those sheds into living spaces.

>All that shit still has to work smoothly if one of your pals gets divorced and has to sell their share
this is the biggest issue in plans with living, but we're all friends that go to the same orthodox church and have connections through godparents
we see eachother almost like family
and since we're orthodox the likelyhood of divorce seems very low, not simply because theres rules against it but also because it teaches people to be as good of a person as you can be to your spouse
never seen an unhappy marriage in my church, and those who get married usually have several children
also only two of my friends are actually married, one being the guy who's interested in this thing like i am
for the row housing, i dont know if that could fit the legal definition or regulations, because the living spaces would likely be shared
and if by HOA you mean home owners association or something, the structure will be built on wooded or farm land
>>2797855
i dont think farmers are legally treated different from normal people, the only difference is that they arent subjected to the laws of a town or city, but still are to state and county laws
and while i'd love to build off an existing structure, the majority of farmhouses in america are massive mcmansions nobody can afford or shitty mobile homes, which i dont really want attached to a structure like a castle
and since a home on a property makes any land retardedly more expensive even if they're really dogshit and old its completely unviable to buy land with a house on it
for example heres this farmhouse near me, the house itself would only be worth like 250k on its own but because whatever boomer asshole owns this thinks his property is worth much more than that he's selling it for 2.5 million
https://www.landsearch.com/properties/dorrance-ks-67634/3305551
its also important to note that the average price per acre is only $3000, so the land should really only be worth $35,000 at best

some quotes i've heard for housebuilding online come at like $100 per square foot
its not from what i've asked any construction company or architect, but if i can keep it at or below that value its attainable
it should especially help that they'd essentially only be doing the exterior walls
also i said i'd have them do the roof framing, but truthfully i dont know if i trust construction companies to even do that well anymore
my biggest fear is that they'll just want to charge millions for simply stacking some fucking bricks instead of making a shitty cardboard house™

looking at this sort of roof design it seems like i could viably construct it myself, especially given the fact that you're apparently supposed to use green wood for roof framing
i could probably construct the bulk of the frame on ground level then pully it up to attach it to the walls to avoid the danger of constructing it ontop of the building

It has no camping besides whatever bum hides out in the creek or forest. It has one publicly available restroom shack. All I've ever seen the park workers do is mow lawns and clean and restock the shitters.

There is nothing wrong with it.
I usually 'lace' the valleys instead of cutting the overlap unless the customer requests it but with 'architectural' shingles like yours, cutting works better.
They should have put a dab of sealer on the exposed heads on the final cap.

Looks like a straightforward roof. Also looks OK.
Those gulleys could use some flashing. My old roof didn’t have it and all the shingles went really bad in that area. New one does though.
How much did yours cost? Mine looks to be your size and was $16k.

Aww shit OP, your are FUCKED.

Here's some advice I can give you.

Be happy it's summer. This is when you can get stuff done. Winter sucks ass on the street. Like really. There's less people so less opportunities for money.
Try and stay near to a city. Going too far from people is a death sentence. You not rely on crowds and their unwanted shit. Dumpster diving is a great way to land new clothes and stuff. People will sometimes leave them separate from the main garbage pile. Keep an eye on municipal garbage collection. Ideally, you'll be diving before they arrive to maximize profits.
You can re-sell a lot of stuff people throw away. Old books, electronics if you can do some minimal repair. It's a great source of income and utilization of your time. It's more effective then canning and scrap collecting.

Other hobos and gypsies will lay claim to territory. You can mess with an occasional hobo, don't fuck around with gypsies. If you fight one you'll be fighting all of them real soon. The streets are theirs you're just visiting. They will steal your stuff and kick the shit out of you in a group. Best stay away.

Other hobos are not your friends. Especially addicts they will steal your shit.

Find a secluded safe place to keep your stuff. You will need a stash. If you get arrested, robbed kicked out, chances are you'll lose all of your stuff. Have a back up stash somewhere. Ideally a friend would hold on to a backpack for you with a spare tarp and some foot. If you don't have a fired get a space and burry a small cash in the woods. This can save your life in the winter. Keep some cash in your socks and/or underpants. If you get robbed this can save your life. Gypsies will steal your shoes too.

Stay away from quick satisfaction. You have time use it productively. Collect scrap, cans bottles. It's easy to sulk and drink all day, but this lands you deeper in the despair and it makes it harder to get out of your situation.

Finding a good third place can be a godsend. If you can find an abandoned utility pass, disconnected sewer drain, train maintenance tunnel.

Find a place where no sane mane will go and look for a place to sleep. Scout it out for a few days. Arrive late, leave early. Try not to be spotted going in or coming out. After a week or so this can become home.

A dude I knew once lived between two utility tunnels for a heating substation. The space was maybe 80cm wide, but it was long. It was also warm in the winder because of the overhead pipes that carry hot water. He ran a phone line (40v) from an overhead connection for lighting and lived there for over 3 years until the maintenance guys finally found him. He went back in a few days and repeated the cycle. Just don't be retarded. To leave you piss and shit everywhere. Don't stink the place up, and you can live a almost normal life.

If you do manage to find a place don't run your fucking moth. Other hobos will want to take your shit, and if they cant take it they will try to ruin it for you. They will follow you home to find where you live.

Learn how to dispose of your piss and shit. Don't act like an animal. Piss in a bottle, empty it and clean it in a public bathroom. Shit in a plastic bag in a bucket, seal it up and throw it away. Stink is the first way of attracting unwarted attention. Being loud is the second.

You have a phone, so that's a godsend. You have near infinite entertainment. So take care of it. Get a solar panel charger and power bank. You'll be salvaging a lot more if you do dumpster diving so this should keep you entertained. Don't blast your phone at 100% at night, somebody will hear it and investigate.

Stockpile some water and food. You will inevitably get sick. And it's ca death sentence if you're thirsty hungry and cant scavenge for food. Ideally, your stash would have about 3-4 days worth of canned food and about 4l of water. Again life saver in the winter.

Have friends. If you have anybody form your old life you can trust, try and reach out. They can offer you a place to shower once in a while, clear your clothes and rest without the worry of getting stabbed by a meth head. Try not to overstep your boundaries. Friends will probably be okay with seeing you homeless ass once every 2-3 months but will stop picking up if you act like an asshole.

If you cant have a knife you can carry a screwdriver. It's alright for self defense and is an okay tool. You should also carry a long stick, it'll make prodding in dumpsters a hell of a lot easier. And push comes to shove you can you it to take a few swings at the other hobos stealing your shit.

You cant carry everything you need on your back. Keep the essentials and try and have a backup. Again finding and keeping a stash is the difference between being a dead hobo cometh winter and a hobo that lives to see another summer.

A few tips for dealing with cops. They will eventually pick up your homeless. If you're not bothering anyone, stinking the place up and stealing shit they wont fuck with you too much. Be polite and have a smile when talking with them. Answer their questions in a polite way. Say you're looking for a friend, you live one town over and just missed your train or something. If you say your a hobo it could mean a one way trip out of town. This isn't that bad, but you could end up with your stuff "misplaced" in the process. Being out of town for too long is a death sentence. There is very little edible food outside of cities, few opportunities to make money, and smaller towns will want you gone and wont give two shits on how they do it.

Finding a secure source of income is also essential. Collecting scrap, old bottles, or selling your skillset such as drawing etc might help out. Try to avoid selling yourself. This will fuck you in the long run. 20$ is 20$ but picking up HIV is a death sentence.

What are some good, preferably open-source security cameras to get?
I bought a wireless WiFi geeni Hawk 2 for like $80 CAD and I like the quality, however they encrypt the video so you cannot read the sd card yourself by plugging it into a computer, and restrict all usage to the mobile app.
Furthermore, I can only save remotely by using their paid cloud storage ($40/year)
And lastly, it's made by chinks.

So that being said, what does this board recommend? Ideally I'd like the camera to, via WiFi, record to a computer in my house on the local network. And of course retain decent quality. Bonus points for made in North America

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to take advantage of my patio?

I've finally stopped working myself to death and now I have free time to relax at home, particularly at night during the summer. I used to spend all of this free time at the gym or in the pool, but I kind of want to have a nice patio to spend time on or even buy a grill and furniture.

The overall space is about 14' x 9' with a wrought iron gate that opens down the walkway to the garage. There is an AC compressor in the opposite corner. I would like to:

-Take advantage of the free space
-Put some furniture out, preferably with my large umbrella over it (10' offset hanging cantilever umbrella with weighted base)
-Keep the costco plastic tiling since it is better than the berber carpet over cement (open to any alternatives other than poly/wood slats, since I'm worried about foundation issues)
-There is a carriage-style light right across from the sliding glass door on the wall.
-There is a lot of space for hanging plants, including two hangers around the iron gate.

Can you help a new homeowner to work out a nice patio setup that won't break the bank, but will also be a nice spot to hang out and maybe host some people?

I'm not terribly interested in a fire pit or anything, unless it is a built in propane heater type table. I have a nice insert inside and nat gas isn't piped to the patio area.

Strip the exif, if you must. While the drawing is nice, there's not much context there...while I can tell that there's a house where the sliding door is, it would be helpful to know what lies outside the boundary of your 9x14 area.

>> No.2798227

>>2798046
that's not a very good answer. also 4chan strips exif data...it's been that way for like a decade broski.

Nothing matters outside of the boundary--thus the picture! The door is just included to make it clear that nothing can be within a few feet of that central open area. But if you absolutely must know, outside the gate is a pathway to my cuckshed and through the sliding door is my wife and her boyfriend's bedroom.

Does anyone have a good co-op plan for a novice carpenter with limited access to tools?

I can always buy a couple of tools like a handsaw which seems necessary.

I have a few chicks in the broader who will be graduating from a coop sometime in the future.

I plan on keeping 4 of them since it's a good number for a beginner flock. They are a larger breed of chicken so I'm estimating 16 sq ft of space (4 x 4) minimum.

Good advice, I checked my local marketplace and was able to find a corded circular saw for a low price of ten dollars, that seemed to be the main thing I needed. Now I just probably need a place to cut the boards. I've seen the black workbenches on YT so maybe I will pick up one of those today as well.

>>2797197
Pallets are a good idea, one of my neighbors used pallets and chicken wire to build his own run. I don't really like how cheap they can look so I'll need to look into good paints for it. I will definitely take this opportunity to learn about carpentry. I don't feel it's going to be anything major, more common sense-based than any real difficulty.

>>2797214
That sounds like an easy way to make their coop. I'd probably add a tarp for cover if all else fails.

I'm going to use a modified shed, this way I dont waste time + money on making a coop from lumber and sheet metal that's going to be sub-par anyway (since I'm not a carpenter) because it's better than a pre-fab which will also be sub-par. I did consider the large kennel but it's going to be slightly more difficult to predator-proof and it won't have as much of a nest feel as an enclosed shed IMO. Ventilation and sunlight are important but I want to make sure my chickens feel safe enough to roost (I think indoors is better for nesting boxes). I usually see people build the kennels and add a coop inside.

My grandmother used to say that 'the world needs ditch diggers too'. Holy fuck though, the fuckups you meet in the trades. The stories I have been told, the aftermath of 'work' I've seen performed. Just, what the fuck. I work in the tech sector. We do a lot of low voltage ethernet runs. Sometimes it is in buildings still going up. I can't count the number I have times I have driven up to a jobsite only to hear that someone got fucking mangled somehow doing dumbshit.

The worst one was a guy the slipped getting down off a ladder. Literally the last step. He fell backwards and ended up falling in a trench they were getting ready to pour concrete in. He sat on some exposed rebar that was sticking up. You'd think, oh, right up the poop shoot, har har har. Nope. Hit him in the asscheak and shattered his hip. Dude passed out down there and they only found him as the started pouring the concrete. He was unconscious, covered in wet cement, and they had to tear the forms out to get at him. Then they cut the rebar under wet concrete to get him out while leaving the rod in so he wouldn't bleed out. He ended up with burns from the concrete on like 30% of his body and basically can barely walk.

Then you get the morons who's work you have to fix. Like the very helpful cable TV installer that came out and used our recently run telephone lines as a means of pulling his cable though the underground conduit. After pulling the phone lines out he then filled both ends of the pipe with a can each of expanding foam. He then argued that he thought that the BRAND NEW phone lines in the BRAND NEW unfinished building that had just been put up were old and no longer in use because there weren't connected to the service panel that HADN'T BEEN INSTALLED YET.

Stay off drugs kids. They can make you too dumb even for the trades.
