it's not that clark's are bad boots, it's just really pleb to only have clark's as your multi-purpose footwear, which is what clark's owners do.

if you wear clark's, that's what people will think about you.

if you buy a clarks collab shoe, or one of the more unique models (like some of the ones carried at places like Oi Polloi) it looks a lot better.

The pencil-thin sole. The godawful leather. The shape of the entire thing. The tan leather. It's just the ugliest piece of shit I've ever seen.

I've had a pair of Clarks for roughly a year, and the sole has picked up a lot of dirt. Is there a way to clean this off, or is this supposed to give the shoe "character" or some gay shit like that?

Creases and wear builds character. Dirt is just... dirty. Unless you literally just got back from a hike, your shoes really shouldn't be caked in mud.

Just get some warm water and a brush and wash it off.

I'd hardly say they're ugly, maybe you and I have different idea of what a DB should look like. I personally think that the kind in OP's image look too "sloped" down the front.
