A lot of AI tech bros using generative AI relish in pointing out that generative AI will replace the visual artist. I was wondering if this was true it least from a commercial perspective and actually found out that hollywood and big studios are firing AI prompters and hiring artists back again. The reason? They can't produce the same quality of work that real artists can, they don't take critique well at all (are very thin-skinned) They can't reproduce works in a same general style that real artists can, etc. the list goes on and on. It seems that there is still a commercial need for talented artists that have trained in this field.

Even for hobbyists, why shit on them as well? Do they really not see the value in what an artist brings? Perhaps it's more nuanced than that. I've used AI to help guide my drawing process like getting specific poses for references or even aiding in costume design ideas. However, my final works are drawn completely by me. I think there's a place for real artists to actually use AI like a tool and not have it replace creatives entirely

I'm trying to learn perspective but almost no resource I find gives a formal, mathematical approach, which I seek to develop intuition properly.

In this case, I want to rotate this cube by its vertical axis from the angle in red at 45 degrees to the angle in blue, I know where the new diagonal should lie, but I don't know how to keep the scale of the cube consistent, I don't know where to cut the line to get the cube to be the same size but in perspective. Does anyone here know how?

I really don't understand either the reasoning for measuring the distance between a vanishing point and a station point and then drawing it over the horizon. I see it works but I don't know why.

Yeah. Stuff like color theory or drapery or general anatomy has always felt pretty intuitive to me, perhaps because they require less precision. For similar reasons I think cooking is way easier than baking.
These days, I can sort of deal with perspective for landscapes, since those are more conducive to eye-balling. But urban settings? Interiors? Mechanical things? It's over for me

Luckily we live in the future, so just use an accessible 3d program to quickly block-out your scenes to use as a guide, rather than drawing them. Is google sketchup still a thing? I think that was the easiest 3D program out there, but there's always blender - you don't really need to know more than just moving around cubes and making the most basic of shapes, because you're only making yourself a guide, and not something to trace over.

its normal. think about the average person who doesn't draw and ask them to draw a full perspective scene. They couldn't do it. No human can just imagine full perspective, we're all imagining things as abstract shapes and descriptions. You have to actually train to think in 3D which is why drawing is so hard.

Even pro artists that seem to be able to draw perspective without rulers and shit, are just REDRAWING THINGS THEY DREW BEFORE. They are experienced in drawing many angle and perspectives, so they are pulling from their memory, which technically is not really building the perspective from scratch.

Not him but he meant there's no thought into planes or where the shadows actually go. Look at the girls' eyes. Left has no shading except the hair strand. Meanwhile, not only does the right have shading under the eyebrows to indicate sockets, the right socket is mostly airbushed while the left is mostly cel shaded until it reaches the inner corner. The socket shadows also make it look like there's a big crooked nasal bone between them.

Yes. Cel shading in general is easier to work with. Too much airbrushing gives a pillow shading effect since soft shading is for, well, soft objects and planes farther away from the object casting it.

as a young autistic 6 year old I would put a paper over a book cover and trace the art over and over again.

later, when tracing again, I had an epiphany. A truly spiritual moment that made drawing click.

you don't actually have to copy it exactly. If the arm is pointing up, you could turn the paper and make it point at a different angle, you can mirror an element in a different position by turning the paper over, you can even scale up or down an element by staying a certain distance from the real lines.

there are infinite permutations of the thing you study, it only takes a little creativity to realize.

After two dozen traces, I would draw the art on my own. I can't draw the exact picture again, because it's gone from visual memory. But I do remember the composition, the content and also the lessons I learned from studying it, this hasn't left me in over 20 years.

What do you think about using your drawing tablet in "touchpad-mode" i.e. the tablet is not the equialent of the screen, like a touchscreen, but it is relative movement, like a touchpad.

I just tried it out and I really seem to prefer it. Also, when I added mouse acceleration, it was totally good to use as a mouse, though I know people wont use it for drawing.

There is no step-by-step process for how to get good at anything. Getting good at something is partially the experience you build up by trying to do it and failing, and also learning how to think for yourself instead of trying to find an authority figure to cling on to.

train your eye >> observing, drawing, copying from life and other artists
train your hand >> ensuring your copies are accurate and have right proportions
train your brain >> learn fundies and theory and practice them

if any one of these three lags behind your process won't be optimal, either your eye will not be able to detect what your hand did wrong or your brain won't know why you drew what you drew etc etc...these all must be trained at the same time.

Hey, just quickly wanted to ask if anyone knows How artgerm does his backgrounds? It seems like some aren't drawn, especially the one in Pic related. Like in Pic related case, is it just a screenshot from the game that he photobashed? Just need some confirmation, thanks guys.

Why is Fifty Shades of Grey so successful if writing shitty fan fiction is so bad? Clearly shitty fan fiction is the way forward.
I get that you want to defend your heroes, but no one is above criticism. Photobashing backgrounds into an otherwise good drawing is like smearing chromatic aberration filters all over a game: even if the underlining idea is great, even if the drawing is good, the very presence of the filter lessens the impact of everything.

Look at this for instance. He does both white void and backgrounds in pin ups. When he does backgrounds, he makes an effort to integrate everything, even when working from photos and reference. He unifies the background with the characters, has them interacting with it some way. In those cases where it's not necessary (when he wants the focus entirely on the girl,) he omits backgrounds entirely or simply puts in a basic prop.

It is not necessary or even desirable to always have a background. It's even less desirable to choose the half in half out approach where you lazily stitch some blurred photograph into the background for "atmosphere." All it is is an expression of laziness and insecurity. Commit to the background fully and put an equal amount of time into it, or leave it out entirely.

Yet another night of me meticulously imagining an animated movie with vivid visuals and fully fleshed out story.

Yet another night of me realizing I will never have the time or money to make any of it real.

Is there a more hopeless feeling /ic/? I turn 28 this year and I just can't spend hours studying and grinding like I used to. Each year I have less time to dedicate to animation. I fucking wish I could live my 20's again and just dedicate a whole decade to my magnum opus. It's fucking over though as I'm fated to wage and make a family through my 30's and 40's. The ideas will remain in my head forever and no one else will see them.
