anon, you have to view it from top-down to better understand why it works. imagine a circle of arbitrary size around the station point (purple), the measuring point is the vanishing point of a chord (green) that connects a radius (blue) that is parallel to the picture plane with another radius (red) that converges to said vanishing point. it is useful because it lets you convert a known length (because it is flat against the picture plane) to one that converges to a vanishing point.
