That is a depiction of Christ "The Bridegroom" or when he was arrested and forced to carry the cross to his crucifixion. Thus, he has not been nailed to the cross yet, so he has no stigmata.

Honestly if you have any questions about orthodox icons I could probably answer them.

because icons are seen as a "prayer portal" to the actual person, like jesus or such, the orthodox iconography is not seen as idolatry. It is not suprising that many would sink a lot of money for a commission using gold leaf or precious jewels.

I am personally baptized in the russian orthodox church, though i did so after as an adult, i just loved the art and made a lot of inspired by iconpgraphy works mainly in oil paintings.

Real icons are meant to be placed in the home at certain heights depending on whether its a saint depicted etc

You can paint your own icon and hang it in your house?
I am Catholic but always thought well about those icons. Makes sense you have to hang them by hierarchy.

I like catholicism if not for the direct link to jesus as the church and yadda all the art they basically got done

I'm not a true believer in the divinity of christ (yet?) i just have a lot of faith and am an half ashkenazi jew with grew up with very atheist parents.

My art and interest in religion grew in college, so i guess i had the opposite of someone who grew up going to church lol I ended up liking going to a church for the quiet time.

I'm not russian orthodox really, I actually had an unorthodox bar mitzvah in israel when I was in my younger twenties lol

Above all else I'm an agnosti theist. I think you come back to what you eventually believed as a child, which for me was that nothing happens when you die. I just live better that way knowing that.

I like jesus as a rebellious figure and almost everything attributed to him and the sheer historical impact (even counting the wars)

He was just a cool jewish guy to me. I relate to that.

>You can paint your own icon and hang it in your house?

TECHNICALLY a "real" icon has to be painted on wood in a very certain process and style. Like I said, my grandmother who later converted to Russian orthodox later in her life loved my paintings and treated them like real icons and prayed to them. I like doing religious work because people who are actually religious always react to them in an interesting way, whether that is "holy" or "right" I leave in your judgement (and i suppose gods?)

Divulge anon. I was seriously thinking of starting an icon only thread. The Church I attend will be teaching a course soon and I play to take it. It will be the first time I seriously delve back into art after a long hiatus.

1.) What makes an icon?
2.) Do you have any work of your own?
3.) References for great iconographers?

The Bible says to seek and you will find, and the degree of faith determines the reward. I've found nothing truer or more fulfilling, and to nothing short of a spectacular degree. I'd urge you (or anyone) to consider really trying it anon, walking in faith.

Born Christian here. What am I if I had a period of doubt, stopped going to church, then gained belief again, but can never take all the rituals seriously. I know it's silly to ask on an art board, but it's just that I believe in the moral and probably the miracles, but I felt like all the rituals and random celebrations today are just useless fat created by clueless clergymen who do not know what really matter and instead worship through mundane means. I feel like just as you need not sacrifice goats to satan to be a sinful person, you also need not entertain all the earthly rituals to stay a believer.

>> No.6395203

>>6395175
I'd say I agree with you. The rituals don't make the heart, and the heart is 100% of it. See Moses serpent staff for instance. As to faith and miracles, I'll just say life takes on a completely different character. The Bible is full of God answering doubt, as well as rewarding faith, without much more of a dividing line than just those who chose to take a step out onto it.

It seems like a lot of people who find faith or rediscover a new form of faith seem happier and allow it to lead their lives. I'm jealous of you anon. Any form of spirituality has been raped and rotted out of my brain by abusive "clergy". I can't walk into a church without getting some really ugly thoughts. Not saying you should steer clear, but try to not get too obsessed and sucked into it to a disorderly degree. Best of luck on your spiritual path.

I'm so sorry that was your upbringing; Thank you for the message.

I'll think of you when I enter a church from now on, just that, some people are brought there against their will.

Hold on to art, that's what I did even In my darkest of darkest moments. In those moments where I dun goof'd up a maddening amount of problems for myself and others, I prayed to whom I pray to (does that sound right? English is technically my second language)
just please, let me feel that feeling of being young and getting better at drawing just a little longer, i want to be an artist not forever, but just a bit longer.

I can't even begin to imagine the atrocities >>6397582
you might have had, but the fact you remain calm and even willing to wish another good tidings are all signs that life might just still be worth living.

Don't be jealous, I'm somewhat jealous of those who got to go to church as children. I think it would have really given me the structure I've fought so hard for, but again, that comes with a host of problems like you yourself described.

I think many more-hardcore chrystian mystics/monks might agree with you? Anyway there are many kinds of Christian meditation and contemplation that you can practice to get in direct contact with the divine.

All you need is just to talk dude, humbly, genuinely. Like you would a person in the room. Your heart is known anyway, so it isn't as if you can hide. Jesus didn't sit down on a throne and have people run through rituals. He shared company, conversation,(sometimes arduously) because his offer was that of a relationship. Just saying, don't get lost on lofty ideas with something so simple. After all, if it wasn't personal, what good would it be to you(or him)?

And then there's this one that looks more similar yet still is isn't the same. So I guess someone somewhere (maybe in another church?) just painted one themselves and took a photo but then it got picked up and became the most prominently shared version without taking the author's identity along for the ride somehow?

Agreed. Pretty much most of what's put out is all the worst of hot garbage bottled up for resale imo. I like to think there's hope though. Every once in a while people seem to get collectively a little sick of it and some movement will come along that rocks the boat for a while. Movements that people believe in heart and soul are pretty motivating as long as the belief lasts.
