/beg/ & /int/ - Beginner and Intermediate general

If you are a /beg/inner or /int/ermediate in art, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice.
Use this thread instead of making new threads or post in the drawthread with fundamental exercises.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS wide using one of the following methods:
1. screenshot the image and post that instead
2. change camera capture settings to something smaller
3. send to computer and resize in MSPaint

READ THE STICKY:

RECOMMENDED BOOKS FOR BEGINNERS:
Read the sticky

TRY TO BE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK.
When giving feedback, avoid vague "advice" - point what's wrong and try to give the anon you're quoting a clear direction to improve their art (study heads < watch THIS VIDEO about head structure, read THIS SECTION of THIS ARTIST'S BOOK, etc).
You, feedback seeking anon, should also try to be clear and concise when asking for critique/help. When posting your artwork, say what you want help with, and what's your goal with the study/artwork.

Two different ideas. I think the basic idea to draw more is to make what you're drawing fun. For me that means studying something that isn't so outside my skill level that my attempts to draw it are damaging to my ego. Creativity is a whole different ballgame though.

this sticky is honestly too long, contains completely unnecessary details (remember, the audience are prebegs and permabegs, not INTs) and is lowkey trying to reinvent wheel. Personally i would just kept the preface, the TLDR on art supplies and then refer begs to books / courses. And here i would tell how the books and or courses differ from each other so the begs themselves could decide if they want intuitive casual approach, the engineer approach or autistic grind. Also the guide roleplays as if observation isnt the most important fundie which is imho a big mistake. Observation should be always on 1st place on any list, not perspective.

Should you use Vilppu drawing manual as a beginner?

This book confuses me, because the lessons are planned in a weird way: start with gesture, which I heard is not really for begs, then goes to form, which is sure, a beg thing, then goes into full anatomy and then at the very end he's like "yeah so measuring is useful, hold your hand straight" and then light and values.

I'm asking because I'm choosing between keys to drawing and the drawing manual to stick to one.

Vilppu is great at explaining basic construction and anatomy, but he doesn't teach you how to give your figures an appealing shape. Copying through Bridgman, then doing master copies of your favorite artists, will give you that. That's basically what David Finch recommnds:
>First, basic forms + proportions
>Then, Anatomy
>Then, Bridgman + Loomis for the heads
>Then, start copying and emulating your favorite artists

Finch doesn't teach anything contrary to what Vilppu teaches, he just adds an extension to Vilppu. If you want to be a professional artist, your style and design choices are really important.

First, make it easier on yourself by drawing the arm nearest to the viewer. The thing to remember about this pose is that the arms cross at the elbows. The upper arms are close to parallel to each other. That also means the position of the hands should also be symmetrical. You have the one hand almost wrapped around the figures back. Hope this helps!

The simple answer: soften the forms. Planes represent forms with perfect hard edges - how hard the edges are IRL is governed by how gradual the turn of the form is. As a rule of thumb, forms which are bone directly under the skin tend to be the sharper ones (with exceptions). Which leads us to -

The complex answer: whether or not you are working from reference, your ability to accurately depict the forms largely depends on how well you understand them (i.e. anatomy). The planes of the face can be understood as a very simplified abstraction of the skull. The better you understand the skull, the broad forms of soft tissue (not individual facial muscles), the general appearance of non-skeletal features like canthal folds, the nodes at the corners of the mouth, aging markers like drooping fat pads, wrinkles, naso-labial lines etc. the better you'll be able to depict the face.

This is extremely annoying in the early days of art because it is common for artists to draw these things from experience and not explain them. The best way to get past this is to do a tremendous amount of facial studies, and supplement the planes-of-the-face approach by understanding the skull very well (you should eventually be able to draw fairly convincing skulls from memory).

Do you know a good resource for learning this? This is my problem, all the most recommended resources like loomis draw the forms with lines instead of values, and they don't teach you how. You'll find as you learn, as an artist, that there are times where there seems to be a big information gap, and you're looking for a "default" approach to a situation but can't find it anywhere. When those times come there you can examine a lot of sources and try to find an approach or combination of approaches that works for you (Proko has a pretty solid free "planes of the nose" video), or you can do studies. Preferably you will do both. Eventually you'll find yourself over the hump after you've put in enough mileage.

As a starter - take it down to fundamentals - a very simple nose can be broken down to a sphere for the tip, and two embedded spheres for the nostril masses. Can you shade a sphere currently? If not, you've skipped part of the learning curve - you should be able to understand light, midtone, core shadow, reflected light, cast shadow etc. - once you do every organic form is broadly rendered the same way (with allowances for style etc.) Once you understand that, then all you need is sufficient information about noses. What are the planes of a typical nose? Can I find a couple of different methods to construct them? Finally, what are some examples of SPECIFIC noses I can work from? This means studies - find photos of different noses, try to understand them as 3D forms. Construct them (block forms, sphere forms, planar construction, combination) and then shade them how you see them (employing what you understand about lighting basic organic forms).

There is a tremendous amount of art instruction out there, but the biggest son of a bitch in drawing is the fact that, eventually, you're gonna have to build your own house. You'll eventually run up into a pile of crappy 3 minute youtube videos, videos from people who shouldn't be teaching, Udemy "courses" that have a 20 minute "anatomy" chapter sloppily thrown together by someone who knows full well you can't even learn anatomy in 20 weeks. Combine the sources you have, and do studies.

Never compare yourself to someone else, it doesn't make logical sense and doesn't help you at all; this is also true emotionally. So stop doing that. YOU can only go at YOUR pace, not someone else's pace. So as long as you are doing your best, you are making it.
>some dude on reddit makes a comment about drawing only for a week, then shows a photo of what might as well be the mona lisa compared to other begs
If it helps you feel better, most of those posts are lies. And even if they aren't, who cares man. My dad was a drunk who drank himself to death at 48, that was over 10 years ago, I don't spend a second being salty that other people have dads who are still alive and have thousands of happy memories with. Life isn't fair and in a lot of cases, brutally unfair. (Imagine if you didn't even have hands) So sitting around feeling bad about yourself because someone else is better off is a waste of your time.

Both untrue. It can be overwhelming and potentially demotivating partly because we view as ‘me vs the rest.’ But it absolutely motivates me to be my best by seeing the great works of others. How would it be illogical? We are all humans generally using the same basic tools on earth in current year. Seems like a fair group to compare to. Nothing exists in a vacuum; everything exists in a context which includes the rest of the actors on the stage. As with most things, it seems balance is key.

Hard to say that there's a "wrong way" but a good gesture will provide a clear sense of the pose, will have a flowing, asymmetrical use of line, will be economical in its use of line. A bad gesture will typically be a "contour drawing" i.e. just an outline, will have extraneous or improperly used lines that break the sense of flow, will be confusing and the pose won't be clear, will have poor line confidence (usually short lines and "railroading")

For you, I would use fewer, longer lines, and preferably (though not mandatorily) a tool which gives you some line weight / density variation.

I have no idea either, but once you have multiple art teachers all teaching it differently, and all getting good results, then it might not be that important after all, in the end. David Finch recommends just laying in basic volumes, instead of doing the stick figure thing. Steve Huston starts with the outer "contours", but simplified. Will Weston teaches you to start with flat shapes. It's all different, and it probably doesn't matter how you do it.

What matters is basic forms, imo, which you seem to have a great handle on. Great Morpho copies, btw

With a small tablet you can only draw small strokes from your wrist. This can lead to repetitive strain injuries. If you've ever had wrist pain from writing, typing, gaming etc. I'd advise getting a medium or large sized tablet. I've heard of a couple professional artists who prefer a smaller tablet so it's not a complete deal breaker but most people would be better off with a bigger one. Yeah I get that, I bit the bullet and bought an expensive tablet. Ended up being good motivation for me to stick with the hobby because I didn't want to waste money. You could buy a cheaper tablet and set a goal of making enough money with art to buy a better one, if you are interested in doing art for money.
Personally I ended up buying a used Intuos Pro Medium. If you don't mind buying used, sites like ebay, craigslist, facebook marketplace or your local sites can have good deals. Would see people selling ones they only used once or twice pretty often.

Anyone have experience with the Hampton Figure book?

Currently working through it. My strategy is to read through each chapter, copy everything he has drawn in each chapter, then at the end of the chapter do at least 15 figure drawings applying whatever the chapter was about before moving to the next.

I've finished the gesture/landmarks chapter and I'm about to finish my last few figures. The next chapter is heads, but I'm wondering if I can / should skip the heads chapter? I've got the Loomis heads book and I've already worked through part of it and plan to return to it after spending some time on figures. Is the Hampton head chapter still worth checking out?

>> No.6623698

>>6623694
I picked up the book a little while ago and just started working through it with you. I'm pretty much doing the same thing as you minus the 15 figures at the end of each chapter. I plan to read and copy through the entire book to get familiar with the shapes of the body he uses before doing any serious observational figure drawing.
I think you're plan is pretty solid. Maybe throw in some quick gestures from observation before each session of copying as a warm up. As for the head chapter, I don't see how it could hurt to still work through it to at least get familiar with the way he draws them.

Anyways need to get mileage in and need to practice perspective and form so I've paid my bills and I'm gonna go internet free until next month, picked up some books on perspective and form and also downloaded some videos.

I don't think I really understand gesture. I get you're supposed to quickly establish the pose, but to some extent the goal seems to be constructing with more innacuracies. Is it something you're supposed to do when constructing figures you plan on finishing, or just as warm up / to plan out a pose before you actually draw it?

>> No.6624149

>>6624142
Gesture is body language. It's what the character is doing. It's POSING. In that way, every character has gesture. Gesture is not the stick figure. That's just ONE way of starting a drawing, that will have a strong gesture. You could conceivable just start with basic forms, and still have a strong gesture. In fact, you could just draw directly, like KJG, and still give your figures a strong gesture.

I fucking hate Nicolaides, because he started all this confusion in the first place. He was the one who coined "gesture drawing" as that scribbly mess to get the "action" of the figure, when in reality no artist before him ever did that. They just laid in basic forms, and made sure the foundation had a strong pose. The STRONG POSE is the point.

just adjust your setup. Put elbow on table, get rid of the angle, sit behind taller table, put on shorter chair, strech. Also is it just muscle fatigue? Or is it joint or nerve pain? Cause muscles can be trained to last longer and they dont really suffer perm damage, instead they get stronger with each use

there are few minor accuracy errors like her right cheek missing proper chin or eye shape. But the biggest offender is how flat majority of her face is. In ref you can see light coming from left which makes left side of her face super bright and the other half darker. You dont have this. The fix is simple: first take the yellow pencil you used for highlight on her haircut and do same bold highlight on her nose, chin and cheek. Then take black pencil and very gently apply darker tone to whole right side. And next time pick woman ref without makeup. Makeup camouflages the face features, essentially cockblocking begs from leveling up observation skill since all they see is blurry nothing.

My attempt at keys 3.1
I'm happy about the torso, though I really fucked up everything else. I can't into faces, but all I think I need to do is practice more, not like I've ever drawn one other than my own before. It's fun trying to get proportions right, and when I'm able to I'm pretty happy with the result. I improved some earlier drawings by using the proportions measuring and it's nice. Can't wait to do more.

ty anon, but the composition ain't mine. bumping my question here >>6623464, found out my cheap tablet doesn't have pen tilt. How do I get into the sharp corners of the linework for colouring? Using different layers is kind of unintuitive when trying to cut shapes into the shadow and midtone.
>>6624783
based fun-having anon. maybe consider using a pen to draw, restating rather than erasing parts of the image that are out of proportion. I found that it was better for drawing momentum when working through Keys

Everytime I start drawing my girlfriend starts pestering me for sex.

Is it because she feels inferior when I'm staring at naked ladies constantly?

BUT ANON, I DID CHANGE THEM THROUGH THE SKETCHES. The legs are a bit different now, and most importantly I changed the pose so it was better balanced (head more to the center, leg a tiny more spread..)

Idk maybe you're right but I can't imagine it

I'll try that for my next one and see how I feel about it. I just did the figure quickly in the first minute and rubbing out was done to basically only on the initial sketch. I thought of it more of a guideline to where I should probably be drawing more than anything.

^Actual good shit gets completely ignored while shit like >>6623776 gets 5 instant (You)s from blind coomers. Lmaoing hard at this thread and everyone in it, especially those thinking this is a good place to receive feedback. I've seen people who post masterworks in comparison to 99% of this entire board get absolutely lambasted for the stupidest shit while the most pre/beg/ vile coomer shit gets a pass and 10 (You)s. Every 'critique' here is a coinflip written by a guy that doesn't even draw himself and has 0 artistic observational ability.

500-1000 hours of drawing. About the mileage I get from mine (wacom intuos S) before they start to become annoying to use. You can sort of tell when you "feel" it bumping and scraping weirdly.
