Unless I'm missing something, I wish Preston Blair's books went more into human construction. He briefly touches on it after dwelling on cartoon animals for dozens of pages, but quickly moves on to animation without construction.

Going back at my old drawing folders by year I can see I had the most gainage with Hampton. I got derailed somewhere or I hit a brick wall in understanding. But now that I know a lot more it would probably help if I reread his stuff.

The point isn't to help you understand, it's to help with volume/perspective/proportion. It's relatively easy to learn to create a box-cylinder mannequin, and once you have that, you can dig into the details without having to worry if what you are drawing is too long/short, or thick/thin.
Like, you can draw a quick mannequin with cylinder arms, make sure it's all well proportioned, then you go over in a new layer and add the actual anatomical nuance on top, like the biceps bulging out, and all you have to do is follow the cylinder like a guideline, and studying anatomy you learn how much of said cylinder's length a biceps takes, or how much it bulges out, so you just add that on top.

gesture and construction are merely two sides of the same coin
'gesture' is a technique to capture motion and life via simplification and condensing the subject to a bare minimum of lines. It can also refer to the quality of motion and life within a piece that can be felt by the viewer. Gesture is not a two dimensional technique or concept at all, unless you yourself have no conception of construction or perspective to begin with. When you breach the realm of drawing in three dimensions, it is a fundamental change of the way that you think and conceive of things, a complete paradigm shift. A red pill if you will. After that point, you will unconsciously incorporate that dimensionality into your gestural drawing and sketching.
