Winter is coming edition

This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware.

Recommended tablets:
>Pen tablets (non display)
Wacom Intuos pro
Huion Inspiroy
Xencelab Pen Tablet
XP Pen Deco (v2 if you can afford it)

>Display tablets
Wacom Cintiq pro
Huion Kamvas plus/pro
XP-Pen Artist
Xencelab Pen display

>Mobile tablets
Apple iPad Pro
Samsung Galaxy Tab
Surface Pro 8/9
Kanvas studio
Wacom mobile studio

>What tablets does /dtg/ use?
https://strawpoll.com/polls/NoZrLOmrDn3

>General guidelines when picking a tablet:
- All of the recommended models are part of large lines with multiple sizes/generations available. Buy the biggest/newest in your budget. Medium-Large pen tablets or 16-24" display tablets are considered the sweet spot by most artists.
- If you don't see a tablet you're interested in listed, ask about it. This isn't a definitive list, just one to give you an idea where to start looking.
- Avoid Chinese tablets 4+ years old or made by literally who brands like gaomon, ugee, parblo, etc. They were generally dogshit, and the reason Wacom had a monopoly for so many years. Newer models from huion and xp-pen are much better.
- Wacom is still the industry standard, but they're overpriced and a lot of pros abd studios are switching. Chinese brands have mostly caught up in the past few years and will provide a near identical user experience for a fraction of the price.

Assuming you put it away on the iPad after using it every time, you never have to worry about remembering to charge it. There were several times when I had a 1st gen pro that I forgot to assfuck my ipad with the pencil before putting it away and had to wait for my pencil to charge before I could draw.
Also with it comes the 3rd gen and later pro which means reduced bezel so all modern screen protectors and cases* will fit, and it has usb c instead of lightning cable.

*cases will be slightly different because of the camer module changing, but they should still fit

Wow the 17 pro isn’t really that much bigger than the iPP12.9. Been looking at the 17 as a portable replacement for my iPP but might actually go bigger and keep it at home. Took me 10 years to get to the point where I could do pro work on the iPP, thanks to Clip Studio. Just a little cramped.

>> No.6964867

>>6964694
Actually prefer the weight off the Pencil1, the 2 feels too light in my hand and the surface they used feels more slippery. Took forever to get used to it. The mag charging is better but it limits which protective cases you can get. I like this adjustable clamp stand but it blocks where the pencil would charge.

>>6964863
>Just a little cramped.
Galaxy s8/s9 ultra, mobilestudio pro 16, or kamvas studio 16 will fix the cramped feeling. A few inches doesn't sound like a lot, but it really does feel substantial in real world use. For a desktop display, I would personally recommend 22/24".

>>6947626
Update: This works really well just like my tabmate. Like with all things though, it will take a bit to get used to. Using it with procrate feels awkward without a hand tool because my other hand is holding the controller rather than just on the screen. But for CSP, it's really good.

>> No.6965033

what is it? just 7 buttons and a scroll wheel? or are the "shoulder" buttons modifiers?

>> No.6965041

>>6965033
The Q1/Q2 trigger buttons activate more keys. Pressing both of them will give an additional 8. So it's 32 keys in total. Downside is I used the trigger on my tabmate as the spacebar and I can't mod the Q keys just for 1 shortcut. The trigger button on the tabmate for me was mostly a "stress" button and tying it to the spacebar helped as I hold the remote for long periods.

But again, it's just going to take a bit of getting used to.

>The book mentions the benefits of the overhand grip and emphasizes better control of the line sharpness and the "graining" technique or whatever (picrel). Is it possible to emulate that on a tablet?
I think that would fall under full arm use as well. It's easier to push straights and pull curves (exceptions apply when necessary) if you're using your whole arm and that pen holding technique makes your wrist more stable which just forces you to use your whole harm.

The graining, though, I'm not sure. I'm not an expert with tablet. Probably has to do with a combination of the tablet itself, it's pressure-sensing, and a particular brush in a specific program made to emulate that. I think Rebel might have something like that built in.

Huon has a new thin stylus. I have one and it's pretty great. It's about half the size of a standard size pen and the grip is matte plastic instead of sillicone which feels really nice. The buttons on it are firmer too. Only thing I don't care for is the IAF is stiffer, so I have to change most of my brush settings. If that doesn't bother you than I'd say chack it out:

there are so many different iterations of tablets with the same name that it makes it kind of a pain in the ass, but your best bet for around $300 is either this
https://store.huion.com/products/kamvas-pro-16?vid=1121
or this
https://store.huion.com/products/kamvas-16-2021?vid=1230

the pro 16 (first link) has the benefit of etched glass, but the older pen
the 16 2021 (second link) has the benefit of their newer pen, but a screen protector.

Personally I fucking hate how screen protectors feel, but people have said the 2021 is a better overall experience despite it because of the better pen.

If both of those are out of your budget,
https://store.huion.com/products/kamvas-pro-13?vid=1119
https://store.huion.com/products/kamvas-13?vid=1222

same deal, the first link has etched glass, the second has their newer pen but a screen protector. Forewarning, there's a very high likelihood you WILL outgrow a 13" tablet, and it will feel cramped as shit. it's not like a 12.9" ipad where the entire screen is your drawing area in procreate, you'll lose ~1/3 of the screen (1/6 on each side) to UI.

If you'd prefer xp-pen to huion (personally I think they were slightly behind until the current gen stuff, but still perfectly usable) their products are almost the exact same price for the same sizes.

Are there any phones you would recommend for drawing? I have an old cintiq 13HD and I used to force myself to draw on it for several years, but eventually I quit because the drawing process wasn't fun. Coming back to it a few years later, I realized it was horribly uncomfortable and the wires made it unwieldy to move around and reposition with. I know a big part of my problem with that is needing to reposition in the first place, but my terrible drawing setup isn't going to change any time soon so something that I could comfortably draw on in various positions might be enough to make it fun again. I used to enjoy drawing in a sketchbook back in school, so I was thinking that maybe a phone or mobile tablet might be good for something convenient that I could just pick up and use without any setup whenever I feel like drawing. Since my old phone is dying and my last tablet didn't feel great, I was leaning toward phone. I'm not looking to draw professionally, it'd just be nice to have a hobby to improve at over time that I could share with people.

They're marketed by sizes like that rather than a diagonal for I don't know what reason. But the dimensions are around
Small - 6x4
Medium - 9x6
Large - 11x7
Xlarge - 14x9
Give or take an inch or so. The sizes are approximately universal across all the brands.

Don't even entertain the idea of getting a small or medium tablet, neither of them are appropriate relative to a modern desktop monitor size. Only a large tablet (which is barely adequate by that standard) or a screen should be up for consideration-but I would still absolutely recommend the former over the latter for a variety of reasons.

There are many advantages to drawing off-screen than on, not even including posture/health related ones but those are significant.

>>6982356
>the back argument is bull
Rising rates of chronic neck and back pain in younger segments of the population say you're wrong. You will not find a single candid photograph of someone using a screen tablet in a manner that wouldn't cause them potentially serious issues over time and you will struggle to even find a staged one, including from the tablet makers themselves. You might see someone do some performative nonsense on youtube they're barely able to maintain for the five minute duration of the video-but that still has no bearing on how you or anyone else (including the video maker) will actually use the device outside of the "demonstration" when no one's looking.

I'm not saying to post it here, but for your own sake you should record yourself working to see what you're really doing at your desk instead of simply taking it on faith that because you supposedly don't feel any strain now that it isn't a foregone conclusion.

>>6982505
You're close enough but a little off
Intuos Medium = 8 x 6
Intuos Medium-Wide (Intuos 3 only, but is much better than a standard "Medium") = 11 x 6

I'll elaborate, I just can't emphasize enough how bad retaining a position like this is in the pic for you for any extended period of time. Screen drawing tablets are the same as cellphones and personal tablets in that they are just another device-albeit in this case a specialized niche one-that is causing us to take anatomically unfortunate positions to facilitate their proper use and are therefore a contributing factor to the increasing rates of spinal infirmities in younger and younger people.

Rightly? On a completely vertical easel, with media that requires constant attention, keeping you from remaining in a static position for too long. Even if an identical position is taken and you hunch over your work on a desk or dinner table you have to consciously remove yourself from the drawing position in digital rather than being forced to by the need to sharpen a pencil or reapply paint. It's not nearly the same.

You won't do this though will you, Tech Neck nigga? Neither does anyone else or pictures of it would be common. I don't blame you because, while drawing on an easel may be healthier it's far clumsier than either being hunched over or drawing with a flat tablet. Methods like sight size involve you literally walking back and forth from your easel with every few strokes you make and in comparative measurement drawing you're still keeping yourself mobile and occupied with physical measurement techniques.

>>6982838
I don't know what to tell you other than yes it is. The disconnect isn't related to "accuracy" but acceleration, a small tablet will zip across your entire screen with such slight movements it's extremely difficult to manage for a beginner but a larger tablet doesn't have this issue.

After looking through the phones that other anon suggested, they all have some issues that make me not want to get a phone for drawing anymore. It's insane that every high-end stylus phone they've released for the past few years forces a curved screen on you and the newer ones don't even have micro SD card support. There's also regional chipset nonsense to worry about. The Fold 5 at least does something new by turning into a tiny tablet, but it doesn't come with a stylus so I wasn't sure about it. Apparently they're doing away with the curved screens for the S24U next year(?) but at this point the next Fold model seems more interesting. There are rumors that the screen will be bigger too so maybe that's something to keep an eye on

Post your fit and I'll take it into consideration, I suspect like most people you've got a higher opinion of it than it deserves though. Every person in that aforementioned image likely believes they're not doing anything wrong too. Even in the image there are some who have their tablets raised somewhat so their neck/back isn't too bad-but now they're having to maintain their arm raised with no support causing tension in the shoulders. At the end of the day it is indisputable that a flat tablet is better for your long term drawing health than a screen is, but some ways of using a screen are better than others in that regard, certainly.

>>6982980
Why would you ever consider limiting yourself to a phone? Even something like an ipad is bad enough being so much smaller than a conventional monitor screen but going out of your way to buy a phone for the specific purpose of drawing is absolutely outlandish to me.

Mobile tablets were the next thing I was going to look into, along with screenless tablets. I was looking for options where I could reposition and get comfy despite my crappy setup and it sounds like a lightweight screenless tablet might work better for that than any mobile device.

It would have been nice to both replace my dying phone and get a more convenient tablet to draw on at the same time, but after seeing my options for phones I'm probably going to give up on that unless it's a bonus thing like >>6983037 said. These things are more expensive than most tablets anyway

I get what you're saying but if you're in the comfort of your own home like most people are the majority of their time, the idea of drawing on a tiny screen like that when there are better and less expensive options readily available is still ponderous.

>>6983057
Most people get their impression of how tablets work from paid influencers or endlessly positive but completely contextless beginners writing reviews on e-commerce websites. That's the reason small tablets sell so well; you have two products (say an Intuos Pro Small and and Intuos Pro Large) both will have 4+ out of five star ratings but one will be much less expensive. Because of that people will often do the "logical thing" and buy the less expensive, but "just as good" option. However, it's wrong lol.

What happens is people buy these cheap little tablets based on positive reviews made in ignorance, and not too long after leaving their own 5 star review on Amazon or whatever come to realize that they're actually extremely unwieldy to draw with (especially for a /beg/), leading them to purchase a screen not too far down the road and become convinced that they were simply incapable of drawing without a screen all along.

The advantages are:

Ergonomics - draw for many hours with zero discomfort. Also, a second monitor can be used for references without having to look up and down or too far off to either side. People like to act offended when I bring this stuff up like I'm being unreasonable but it's super important.

Longevity of the device - flat tablets have no moving parts nor do they generate any heat or have a screen that's going to become scuffed up or burn out, this is why many 20 year old models are still being employed in the field today.

Your software canvas being completely open to your observation with zero obstruction is very beneficial as well.

I came across this video and found the kind of setup looked nice for drawing. The noise seems much rougher and less glass-like compared to a typical apple/android tablet, and it does looks like my screen-less wacom tablet.

hipaint and infinite painter are almost 1:1 clones of procreate, CSP recently added a simple mode that gets rid of the clunky desktop UI and replaces it with a tablet-friendly layout similar to procreate
it's got everything you need for illustration but you can freely switch between the modes if it's missing a feature you wanna use at some point in your drawing

Looked into it more and figured out that it's usually something messed up with the drivers. I was on the current 2023 drivers and this issue was happening.

A potential fix (and what worked for me) was downloading older drivers. For some reason Huion doesn't make it easy to download older drivers. So my tablet came out in 2020 so I was looking for 2020+ drivers. What I did was find a tablet discontinued in 2020-2023 and download the drivers for it. Although they're different tablets everything works fine. I think all drivers work for every tablet.

Solid deal, I got mine second hand in like-new condition for the outrageous price of $70, but the only downside is it didn't come with the clip. Definitely use the paper clip because the thing starts deteriorating immediately if you draw directly on it (you can replace the cover but it's $40 lol, this is why I still use 3s, the 5 and 4 are similar in this regard). Consider using paper meant for wet media like markers. It's much smoother while still retaining an appreciable grit.
