You think that's bad? Let me tell you a worse story. As a preface, let me just say that R07's stories simply aren't casual entertainment..

I got an old friend to watch the Gou anime because he loved Studio Deen's Higurashi anime back in the day. He'd seemed pretty depressed recently, so I thought I could get him to cheer up and immersed in an old favorite anime. "Like in the good old days." I thought I'd exchange some thoughts on the portrayal of Rika-Satoko school drama with someone who is old enough to be well removed from the schoolkid perspective. Maybe get some creative "outsider perspective" theories out of him. I tried to get him excited of the weekly hype train, but that didn't really work out. He slowly watched some episodes and finally marathoned most of the second cour after Gou finished airing.

Somehow, he turned out to be so fucking clueless that he didn't figure out Satoko culprit even after episode 17 spelled it out. He kept missing/forgetting many short but important scenes. He kept complaining how it's bad writing that things aren't explained...I was so fucking flabbergasted at that. He knows it's a mystery, he knows the concept of question and answer arcs, he knows the (anime version) of the old story. He also didn't seem to understand any of characters, complaining that nobody makes sense and anyone can just do anything. I thought I'd explain character motivations that he might have missed--once he's done watching all episodes. So after he finished watching the whole thing, I tried to start by talking about what went down in each damashi arc. The plan was to steer the conversation so he get the enjoyment of figuring out what happened in his own with a little help, instread of me directly spoonfeeding everything. He literally couldn't remember a single thing about onidamashi even after I refreshed his memory a bit about how things went in onikakushi and what changed. At that point I gave up and lamented how an once smart guy has turned into a braindead husk of his former self.

I now wholly believe that this is the stereotypical average consumer of any video entertainment. This made me view the post-ep20 livestream interview in a new light. It openly discussed relatively advanced concepts, respecting their audience's intelligence. I now have newfound respect for that.
