… Yet, bravely, the small fertilized egg fought against the crushing tide, closing Gaps left and right just as more and more popped in around it, bloodshot eyes wide and quivering, exuding a feeling impossible to properly discern, akin to deep-seated trauma. One of the interesting things about studying the Gap genetically, however, was finding its triggers and how they work—such a simple but destructive thing to understand, and exactly what saved us here: loading the egg with a reverse-bioengineered version of the triggers to close any Gap attacking it was our best chance of a defense mechanism, the hundreds of hours of restless work absolutely paying off before my very eyes. Udongein watched in unparalleled confusion, her petite mind unable to comprehend the brilliance and sheer scale of this war; I couldn't help but have pride take over my face: that's my first immaculate child, fighting the world before taking its first ever breath of fresh air…

… Yukari watched in pure awe, her eyes broad as plates and her body trembling like a leaf against a violent storm, tears streaming and clear distress growing as the seconds turned into minutes and the bombardment of Gaps did not stop, her skin losing its pinkness and her hand over her belly clutching it as if attempting to rip a piece off of it. There are few who can say they have seen Yukari Yakumo display such… authentic humanity. It was quite beautiful and, even if for a moment, made me think—what the hell have I done…? Perfection, of course. No gain pondering that.

Humanity led her towards mistakes; a tinge of magic filled the air out of the blue, and before she could ruin all my hard work, I caught her wrist. Her clenched teeth and tense eyes were on me immediately, fury, pure and unadulterated; I didn’t waver. "Don't attempt to close the Gaps. We discussed what that could mean for the child."

Her using a Gap after fertilization was a sudden and unknown variable, making it impossible to predict how the body would react to it; the mere thought of the impact it could have on something as sensitive as a fertilized egg was shiver-inducing. It's better to be safe than sorry. Her most rational mind relinquished emotion and soon understood that too, Yukari calmly nodding before swiftly returning her eyes to the open Gap—open before fertilization and used as a simple observational mechanism, not interfering directly with the egg, so no problem—the war marching on and on, her tears never drying—dosages of saline solution were put in place, keeping her count of minerals and other variable resources at a maximum—sweat shortly covering her whole body and drying with the coolness of the clinic, etiquette forgotten as she unconsciously grabbed my hand with the strength of an Inaba making mochi. "Anon, please…" She mumbled occasionally for whatever motive.

Seconds dragged incessantly, minutes a few turned to half an hour of excruciatingly monitoring the fragile egg and keeping her body healthy, lavender eyes glued to the Gap—

—then, suddenly, it stopped.

The Gaps completely stopped attacking the egg.

Yukari's breath halted for an eternal couple of seconds, expecting something to go wrong—for the egg to implode or any morbidly similar end result… But, smugly, I reached my conclusion: her body stopped fighting against it.

Many theories existed for why her body attacked fertilized eggs to begin with, but I now deem them severely unimportant.

It's over.

Slowly, she looked towards me, my eyes on the wall clock. "XX/12/20X3–13:05—patient number 08-1720-03:::IUI has returned a successful conception. Udongein, go prepare Yukari’s prenatal plan." The moon rabbit nodded with a quick bow, rushing out of the room to start the planning; ugh, it'll be a hell to coincide it with Yukari’s busy chronogram…

Oh, well, she’ll find time: After all, nothing is more important than a baby growing inside of you~

I turn to Yukari, and her eyes shine like diamonds. "Conception and pregnancy are not the same thing, mind you, and we'll be accompanying yours for the next three weeks, maybe more depending on unrelated side effects of human/youkai pregnancy. In about a week time, though, I'll be seeing if the fertilized egg has implanted itself on the uterine lining, so don't take any of this as ultimate proof… Still." I clap for a bit with a tender smile—hiding very well my true feelings and intentions—, startling one of the arguably most powerful woman in Gensokyo… who, slowly, opened the biggest of smiles, giggling like a small child, her right-hand hiding her mouth as many thick tears of overjoy fell down, purple eyes gleaming: "Congratulations, Yukari Yakumo. You might be pregnant!"

rest comes tonight if I have the time to finish editing~
