Thread quality is something extremely vague and more importantly inconsistent, one thread can be so bad you have people claiming we might as well never make another thread again while the very next one after that has people saying how nice and enjoyable it was (incidentally, this happened recently if you've been around). The point is that the degenerate non-serious discussion has always been there and didn't hinder serious arguments at all, thinking it does so is petty and feels more like wanting to complain rather than do something about it or look at things concretely. The very things that you claim hinder you don't seem to affect anyone else, nor should they, right now you or me could bring something up to chit chat about.
