I read the wiki and addressed the other two speculations. I don't think a guy who willingly cast aside his humanity, ran on sight of the shrine maiden, and waited for some "fool" to use his book is an upstanding person who's going to back Humans up and fight Youkai. By his own words he avoided becoming a vengeful spirit which makes that a possibility for people attempting to become a Youkai through this method. He also found out about the secrets long before becoming a Youkai, it was his motivation for doing it. It's a shortcut to power plain and simple, and if you want to fight Youkai there's other ways that don't involve damning your soul to oblivion, as we see with Marisa proving that a normal Human can go the magician route and be fine.
