Yuuka’s handiwork was readily apparent as soon as Shinki entered Anon’s prison. It admittedly was a long time since Shinki last properly saw Yuuka’s art in all its glory, but the Flower Master doesn’t disappoint. Perhaps she could do some work on Makai?

Filing away that thought for later, Shinki turns her attention to the main shrine building. A faithful reconstruction, though that’s not all too impressive for someone like Yukari. Snooping inside, she finds a pleasant home that doesn’t give the impression of being, in effect, a sex dungeon.

Anon also doesn’t seem to be awake, so she makes her way to the kitchen. She hadn’t actually eaten before leaving (partly because she’s never actually had to eat), so she helps herself.

Soon after the eggs start to fry, a groggy man wanders into the kitchen with a mumbled, “‘Morning Takan-”

He pauses to stare at Shinki while she hums a jaunty tune and tends to her omelets. Finally, he states, “I don’t think you are supposed to be here. Who are you?”

Shinki gasps and clutches at her chest, tears welling in her eyes. “I-I’m not supposed to be here? Do you not recognize your own mother-in-law? What, you marry my daughter and scorn me? Shall you drive me away into the cold, unforgiving snow?”

Anon blinks at that, his mind struggling to process such bullshit so early in the morning. “Who did I marry?”

Shinki gasps again, “Oh you rake! You steal my poor Alice’s heart and take her for a wife and can’t even remember doing so? You heartbreaker! You philanderer!”

Anon raises his arms placatingly in the face of Shinki’s accusations. “I think there’s been a miscommunication, I never-”

Shinki retorts, “What miscommunication? There was a traditional Makaian marriage sealed by a kiss under the stars, was there not? Why it’s like something out of an old Makaian romance novel.”

Anon is quiet for a moment as he attempts to string together a coherent retort. “If that had greater significance in Makai, I’m sorry but I wasn’t aware. I-”

Shinki cuts him off, “Kiss young maidens without a thought for their tender hearts?”

Anon cringes, “I’m sorry I-”

Shinki cuts him off again with a far more even tone, “You really shouldn’t be. I was lying, Makai doesn’t have any advanced beliefs on courtship, unfortunately. You’ve not unknowingly agreed to a marriage…”

Shinki leans in closer while shooting Anon a conspiratorial look, “Unless…?”

Anon, quietly rudely, avoids the question by asking, “You’re Shinki, right? Alice mentioned you before.”

Shinki’s tone shifts again, this time into a seemingly innocent voice. “Oh? What does my beloved daughter have to say about me? Nothing contumelious I assume?”

Anon blinks again before attempting to mouth out contumelious, he soon gives up and just nods. “She just said you might visit.”

Shinki smiles, “Wise foresight from my beloved daughter, I have in fact come to visit. I was curious about the murmurs I’ve heard about you down in Makai and after learning of my daughter’s visit, I simply had to figure out what all the fuss was about.”

For some reason, Anon looks past Shinki and begins to speak, “Ah yo-”

Shinki, who was not finished talking, overlooks that faux pas on Anon’s part and continues. “Getting a good look at you, I can see it. You’re certainly well put together.”

Anon again interrupts without adding anything meaningful, “I think you shou-”

The ending of that sentence is blurred when Shinki suddenly closes the distance and cups Anon’s cheeks, moving his head around to look at it from various angles. “Taking a more scientific approach to the judgment, you’ve quite the pleasing admixture. The pronounced bone structure of nobility mixed with the build of an honest laborer and just a hint of barbarian features, all familiar in the way that a normal human would be and yet ever so exotic. A man from the outside world, a man from the future. Or I suppose, a man from the present in this world of the past.”

As she lets go of Anon’s face, he speaks with a sudden urgency, “Look behi-”

He moves to go, but Shinki does not allow this. “Wait a moment, I’m not finished. As I was saying, there certainly are flaws. You’re no ethereal jade-like bishounen, but the occasional callus or the like only serves to add to a certain down-to-earth comeliness. Handsome but in an approachable salt of the earth kind of way. Now what was it you were saying?”

Anon states rather flatly, “I think you’ve burned the omelets.”

Turning around, Shinki does indeed see blackened char where there was once egg. “Oh.”
