singularity assumes limitless machine intelligence growth (or at least until it's strongly super-human)
It's not that I find the most radical predictions impossible, but they are undeniably highly speculative, given that we don't actually have a clue how intelligence truly works, and what obstacles are there to overcome before we replicate it in silicon.
So far one milestone/functionality gained after another turns out to not be at the core of human level intelligence (from chess to language manipulation most recently) despite what we could predict.
It's anywhere between "singularity in a decade" and "building ladder to the moon" or "still stupid, but much faster".
Exponential reasoning of the type "infinite population growth" "infinite machine IQ" "infinite global warming" most commonly turns out to be absurd in retrospect.
The main reason I'm sneering at AI doomers is because they so often act like hysterical cultists irl, but I would lie if I said I'm completely unconcerned about AI.
