It's not weird if you knew his history with North Korea. His mentor is Rikidozan who was a North Korean. In 1995 his match with Ric Flair in North Korea drew the biggest crowd in professional wrestling history. He used to visit North Korea every year until 2019 to do wrestling shows and promote sports there. He even opened a sports NPO there in 2014. I remember when he made the Abe administration seethe so hard for his repeated trips to North Korea when he was a lawmaker in 2013, they even banned him from attending the diet for 30 days because of it. Despite that, he kept going there even during the time where North Korea were repeatedly sending their ballistics towards Japan's EEZ in 2017 which made the Abe administration go apeshit over it. Inoki is prolly the only Japanese person in history North Korea doesn't hate.
