>Get fucked, seriously.
I find that to be a very interesting choice of words, given the context. Is that like /jp/'s version of "good luck"?

Hatsune Miku is a moe anthropomorphism of a Vocaloid voicebank put out by Crypton Future Media. Vocaloid is a "singing synthesizer", a voice synthesizer that can create vocal tracks for songs.

Miku is also part of the whole Japanese idol ("aidoru") phenomenon, which basically involves picking up young girls, pumping them up into celebrity paragons of virtue, and then dump them as soon as they get to old or the tabloids find out she has a bf. Miku, by virtue of being, well, virtual, will always be 16, and will never give her producers any trouble.

As to why there's no official anime or manga, well, that's probably because Crypton is a music company, not an anime studio. Beyond music videos, there's really no need from their perspective to make that sort of investment.

Speaking of videos, those YouTube videos are just the tip of the iceberg. Miku has a musical discography of a size that would be impossible for any flesh-and-bones singer to acquire. Some of it is available on the English iTunes, some more on the Japanese iTunes, and also much more on SoundCloud. Miku (and Vocaloid music in general) is very popular in Japan, and is frequently played on the radio and in stores.

By projecting an animated version of Miku onto some screen, actual concerts have been done solely of Miku, and many to sold-out venues. Hatsune Miku served as the opener to one of Lady GaGa's concerts, which also helped to introduce her and Vocaloid music more to the US.

Time will tell though if Americans will ever shake their general distrust of computer-generated music, but either way, Hatsune Miku will continue to be an icon of the Japanese popular music scene for the foreseeable future.

I'd also like to see Crypton and Yamaha do more to encourage use of their software. I'd like to see the vocaloid apps available in Japan translated to English and made available in the Anglophone App Stores.
