“I don’t know her that well. She used to come here with her parents as a little girl, back when they still went to the village frequently. After that I didn’t see her at all until they left the shrine and she started ti visit again to check out books. I just haven’t meet her that much” This was one of the reasons I was looking forward to the party. I’d get a chance to actually get to know her beyond short conversations and second hand information. I hoped she liked her gift, I didn’t know much about her taste in books so I had to do some guesswork when putting it together. I hoped she liked it.

“So you’re not that close either. I could get closer but now’s not a very good time to try to act all friendly with her” Mamizou pushed the stack of books to the side so she could lean on the desk. “Poor girl. All of this must be taking a huge toll on her no matter how she tries to hide it”

I just nodded slightly. I couldn’t even imagine how awful this must be her. Her own father captured and degraded, and she couldn’t do anything about it. If Anon was freed, the both of them deserved to have a worry-free life until the day they died.

“She was troubled even before all of this happened. Bitter and rebellious, but she had her reasons to turn out that way. Despite all of that, she has potential. She’s none too shabby on picking up on clues, and I’ve never seen her fight, but I can just tell she has her mother’s strength. If she were to train and be convinced to take her duties seriously, then we’d have a great shrine maiden in place. But she needs to fix her issues before she even thinks of doing so, and that is up to her. As in she doesn’t have much support” Mamizou sighed.

“I’m not sure what I can do to help her” I hazarded a guess at what she was getting at. Helping someone with motherhood was one thing, but trying to help someone with issues I couldn’t even begin to understand or relate to was another. I’d probably just make things worse.
Mamizou stood up straight “I can’t expect you to solve all her issues. I just think it would be a big help if you got to know her more. Gave her someone else to rely on. I’m not asking you to do anything more then that”

“Alright. I’ll put in an effort to help her out. Just don’t ask me to spy on her or anything. I don’t think she would appreciate it” Knowing Mamizou, if she really wanted to know more about Hana, she’d already have her own sources. Whether I was another angle for her to use or not, I wanted to get closer to her on my own. Geez, with Keine’s children, Marisa’s pregnancy and now Hana, I was finding myself looking after other people’s offspring a lot.

“Thanks, Kosuzu. I’ll just take this book and I’ll be out of your hair” she hands over one of the books on the stack. After it’s checked out, she leaves the Suuzunaan, returning everything to quiet. I could use the time to take a nap, but I no longer feel tired. There’s so much to worry about, but for now, focus on the party. When the time comes, I’ll go there and get to know Hana a bit to start out with. After that, it’s just gifts, food and relaxation for the day. Any worries would wait until the party was over.
