Something with furigana. Look up the "Japanese Readers" in cornucopia, they have something.

For example, "Read Real Japanese Fiction Short Stories by Contemporary Writers" is a nice introduction because it's bilingual (one side english and one side japanese) but also because they translate the sentences by parts, so you can see how those parts merge. Daunting at first, but it's totally manageable for beginners.
