10664111 No.10664111 [Reply] [Original]

Why is Japanese so needlessly complicated? Even English is better as it provides an easy way to convey your reasoning and to communicate with the rest of the world. What can possibly justify having thousands of different combinations of strokes under the form of kanji? Moreso, why are people willing to learn that pile of crap and basically waste their life on such a useless thing? Is it solely because of selfish reasons like being able to understand VNs and read manga, and whatnot?

Eroge, yes. Porn/sex is the ultimate motivator.

Even Japan recognizes how shitty their language is and many scholars think it's on the way out. Ever notice how their keyboards are in English? Japanese is one of the shittiest language in existence for typing.

>Why is Japanese so needlessly complicated?

It isn't. What you really mean is "different to English" (and other Romance languages).

>Even English is better as it provides an easy way to convey your reasoning and to communicate with the rest of the world.

So does every language. This is why language exists.

>What can possibly justify having thousands of different combinations of strokes under the form of kanji?

What can possibly justify having hundreds of thousands of different combinations of letters we call "words"?

>Moreso, why are people willing to learn that pile of crap and basically waste their life on such a useless thing? Is it solely because of selfish reasons like being able to understand VNs and read manga, and whatnot?

For people here, yes, but Japan is also big business and 1.92% of the world population are native Japanese speakers.

also stroke order is a joke top to bottom
that said I still prefer chinese where grammar is such a joke that you can arrange the phrases of a sentence into any order with or without adding the correct particles and everyone will still be fine with it

also jap uses traditional most the time instead of simplified so you can guess the meaning and the sound by looking at the radical and rest of the kanji

tl;dr: you suck dick at chinese

Japanese is hard in the sense that is incredibly tedious and requires at least twice as much memorization as any other language. On the grammar side, everything is always implied/context based. Japanese hasn't got the voiced th, voiceless th or different sounds for r and l, true. However, there are also phonemes in japanese that aren't used in english (such as the said /r/ sound). If you say japanese phonology is stupid, get ready to also talk shit about spanish, french, and basically every single language that's not english.

This is the reason why English speaking countries are so good at inventing new things and why Chinese and Japanese people have no creativity at all, but they're extremely intelligent.

The way that you percieve language is such a fundamental thing. Your language is the foundation of your thoughts. Japanese and Chinese people learn a language which takes a huge amount of memorization and dedication to learn, and even the process of writing the language requires being able to instantly recall thousands of complex memorized details.

English is very different though. There are some confusing rules, but the language itself is simple and requires very little memorization. This promotes more creative thinking because we don't need to be conditioned from birth to train constantly just so we can speak.

Easy to learn languages = Promotes creativity, encourages the discovery of different ways to express the language, and overall makes you a far more creative person who likes to think outside of the box and explore.

Difficult to learn languages with large amounts of memorization = Stifles creativity, you don't experiment and play around with your language because you're never completely comfortable with it, makes you a very dedicated worker who can perform exceptional well, but it's unlikely that you will ever do anything original.

I disagree. I'll take German as an example. Now, we all know its reputation as a hard language, and the grammar is indeed quite rigid and full of rules. However, you have the freedom to mix and match words creatively, eventually making up new words and expressing yourself differently. In other words, having a rigid structure doesn't stifle creativity, it just forces you to express yourself in a different way.

And i dont recall using the word "stupid", just poor or easier, but japanese lack of phonemes is a fact

Japanese isn't adaptable enough. Our alphabet can spell out every single word that exists in any language, the only exception being those weird African languages that are just a bunch of clicking sounds, but Japanese has constantly had to keep patching itself up to stay relevant. They have to use more and more foreign words on a daily basis, but the sounds of their language is limited and even with katakana there are many basic sounds that they have a lot of trouble making.

It's like patching a leak on a dam. It's fine now, but your bridge is degrading more and more because the design of the dam was flawed from the start and didn't account for new challenges that would come with age.

Meanwhile, the average English speaker's pronunciation of 'karaoke' is, of course, a flawless reproduction of the Japanese word, since our superior alphabet can represent those sounds perfectly.

Seriously, why does it matter that Japanese (and indeed every other language) changes the pronunciation of loanwords?

If you think about it, maybe 90% of English words are loanwords because it's a fairly recent language. They're all from Latin or French or whatever. Only a small number of words are shit we've coined, usually stupid things to do with technology.

Anyway, I sure as HELL doubt we're pronouncing those Latin and French words "correctly".

Kaka is a Swedish word that means cake. Cake is an English word that means cake. Keiki is a Japanese word that means cake.

Excuse my autism, but I must interject. I hate this word, people really need to stop using it so much. It's getting to the point that it doesn't even make any sense when it's used.

Using entitled in that sentence would be like saying, "I like how not only do you claim to deserve to think your alphabet is the best thing ever."

Would you rather learn about dolphins from a talking dolphin or someone who has studied dolphins his whole life?

Learning from the perspective of an outsider who has studied a language is usually more useful than learning about it from the people who were raised with the language. The outsider will understand the unique difficulties that foreigners face when learning Japanese as their second language while the Japanese person won't understand any of that because it was his first language.

However an average Korean senior will know around two thousand characters and middle-aged person will know around a thousand. This is because the Hangul is almost always written next to a Hanja and therefore it is not required to know it. You see, Koreans are a bit more smart than Japanese.
