I think the Japanese as a people (east Asians) are just more predisposed to being "geeky" in the first place.

Combine that with their large, advanced economy and relatively freer market (eg. compared to china) and you have a place that is ripe to produce content that appeals to shut-in geeks all over.

Partially true. Japan's pushing their media and novel aspects of their culture in order to build global cultural influence ("soft power"). They can't control with military might after WWII, but they can control people's perceptions of them. People tend to hold Japan in very high regard simply because they enjoy its cultural exports. The same thing is happening with South Korea, though they're spending outrageous amounts of money to do so.

High and low culture dichotomy has always been less prominent in Japan. Eroticism has been closely tied with art and literature since at least the Edo period and these were generally the things that received popularity (e.g. Ukiyo-e, yellow books).

Perhaps not all Western, but at least U.S. media has been held back (on the erotic front) by puritan ideals. Today, we might see more sex and sensuality in media, but it's nothing compared to stuff coming out of Europe or Japan. Keep in mind that I'm not talking about pornography, but eroticism. Hell, you could hardly show kissing in pre-60s American films.
