It seems oled panels make text blurrier because of their non RGB subpixel arrangement.
I'm considering buying a 1440p oled monitor but I'm worried that, with many vns targeting 1080p, the non integer scale from 1080p to 1440p and oled blurry text would make it too much of a hassle to read vns on that monitor.

Pic related is an example of how text looks like without and with font mitigation in an oled screen, but I don't even know if japanese text also benefits from this.

Try limiting fps if you have >60 hz monitor. Lower upscale level if you aren't happy with heath. Maybe remove "restore" filter.
Undervolting your gpu is an option too.

Ami's route should be fairly obvious for the most part. The only part where it wasn't, was the question about Sunao where you're supposed to answer 高階が可哀想だ, otherwise you'll miss Ami's route.
As for the rest, it might be a bit trickier as you only realise you've entered the route you want much later.
Maybe it's just me being retarded, but I think the guide on Seiya has mistakes. I tried entering Touko's route twice and failed, so I ended up using the digest play mode. I think it's fine to use it if you're stuck despite the help of a guide. Just mind it won't let you see bad endings.
Also a piece of advice, Ctrl is force skip, for the normal skip you have to use the onscreen button (F1 or F2).

Finally set aside the time to 100% complete 夜刀姫斬鬼行 after constantly putting it off (minus one side story but that's just H for one girl; for tomorrow) and to be frank, what an utter disappointment this was. On paper, it looks cool as hell. 00s character designs, big cast of characters, cool powers, nice production values, ridiculously loaded voice cast (Wakamoto, Koyasu), etc. but what brings it down is the absolutely putrid writing. It doesn't start off bad however. Actually it starts off good even. MC gets caught up in some weird happenings in his local town, cue fights, funny shenanigans, and all that good jazz. Like with any game of this nature, you expect the common route to hold back a bit and for the story's true hand to be revealed later. Unfortunately, it's one really ugly hand.

First off, the characters are about as deep as a puddle. I mean no not everyone needs to have some sobbing deep backstory, but it's like the writers didn't even make an attempt. Some of these characters seem to exist purely just to fill a quota. What's the deal with Kagachi and his brother? Who knows. Wanted to learn more about Hokuto? Too bad, she only has any significant screentime in one route which barely explains anything. Loogaroo? Don't get greedy now. The main characters get at least some surface level stuff to be maybe passable, but it really falls flat in a lot of ways. One of the whole main appeals of this genre is to see characters clashing, and it just doesn't work when you as a reader don't really give a fuck about most of them.

Another complaint is the way power progression is handled in the story. The usual thing you expect is that the MC starts off weak, gradually gets better, and then is a badass by the end. Sure it's cliche, but it's just the most logical thing to do. In Yatohime, Yuuma is basically weak as shit for like 90% of the story until about the last couple of chapters or so where he suddenly gets godly good. It's pretty frustrating because the entire time you have characters blabbing about how great his 力 is and all that only to watch him need to get his ass saved yet again. The weirder part is that the writers put in plenty of scenarios where it would have been totally fine and believable for MC to just get a clean win. There were plenty of times when I thought "ah this is the fight" only to have my expectations subverted and for some random person to save MC. I guess kudos for the uniqueness.

Speaking of the fight writing, it oscillates from "pretty cool" to "fucking bad". It's bizarre. One thing they did tend to struggle with was anything that was more complicated than a 1v1, but even some of those were bad for no reason. One that sticks out in particular is at the end of Sakurako's route. Shit happens Takayuki ends up turning into this badass looking oni monster thing and starts going on a killing spree. Naturally, it's up to MC to save the day here. So you expect a really sweet battle but what actually happens is that Yuuma just shoots a big lightning bolt and instantly kills him. They took the time to make a unique oni sprite and everything and yet do nothing with it. It's so fucking bizarre. There was that other time when MC is fighting Yashamaru near the end of Tou's route and the dude literally fucking overdoses in the middle of the battle and gets mercy killed. What the fuck.

Also this game had a gazillion writers and you can really feel it because consistency between routes is basically non-existent. I can wave off a few things happening in one route that doesn't happen in another without much explanation, but here it's to the point of absurdity. Case in point. Takayuki is villainous in only Sakurako's route, and it doesn't make a lick of sense when you find out more about him later. The dude's entire desire and goal was to liberate the 夜刀一族 and offering up Sakurako in the usual 大祓 ritual is a direct contradiction to all of that. I can maybe accept that he for *reasons* took the evil path to gain power first before making his move. Except that there's that one bad end where he does the evil laugh with the doctor and remarks about how he can now take over the world. It makes no sense and is a direct contradiction to his characterization in all the other routes where he's pretty much a good guy.

Went over the limit there (one more paragraph). There's a lot more I can complain about like Yashamaru disappearing in one route for no reason, Shougen being a wet fart of a villain, or Hokuto having zero role outside of Tsukiko's route (minus a bad end in Sakurako which makes the events of the route make less sense the more you think about it), but what's frustrating is that there's genuinely some cool ideas and good moments. Like MC's friend turning bad in one route was unexpected and kind of great. The punch out fight was sweet. But everything put together is just a mess. If they just cut the bloat, focused on a tighter cast and avoided some of the obvious missteps, this honestly could have been a great game. Unfortunately, it's an exemplary example of "less than the sum of its parts". So my advice to the chuunibros, don't bother with this. Just read that Light, Nitroplus, etc. title that you haven't gotten around to yet instead.

I have finished 俺たちに翼はない ―――under the innocent sky., to which I had devoted most of my VN time from February 2023 to November 2023.

While Oretsuba had been sitting on my VNDB wishlist for an entire decade, and was one of my "VN life goals," I was skeptical going into the work. I had often heard things like "the entire VN is 4MB of surface-level text that serves no deeper meaning beyond being good text" and "the VN is a comedy first and foremost with the plot taking a backseat throughout the entire VN" -- these are things I would expect to read in a review about moebuta trash if moebuta knew how to write intelligent reviews. These statements are technically true; Oretsuba is in some ways the VN equivalent of Seinfeld: a VN about nothing. Still, Oretsuba delivered.

Jackson writes about culture in the same way that SCA-Di writes about philosophy, being able to coherently integrate esoteric or highly intelligent references seamlessly into a larger text. Simultaneously, Jackson's mastery of the Japanese language makes for a challenging but captivating read. Over the course of the VN I mined approximately 600 words. Between the cultural references (which you should absolutely look up when you encounter them) and the Japanese in the text itself, you will become a more intelligent person after having read this work.

With regards to style, this VN very subtly sits directly on the liminoid between "fourth wall-breaking" and "pure metafiction." The VN is aware that it is a VN, and often reminds you that it is a VN, but without going overboard with it like DDLC. For a concrete example, Kakeru gets scolded for using the word マ×× (ma***), but gets around this by self-censoring to ヌンコ = (rnanko) (yes I came up with this translation myself and am extremely proud of it). From Kakeru's perspective he's self-censoring so that he's not saying a "bad word" but from the reader's perspective, he's doing it to get around the VN censors.

I highlight the importance of "perspective" above, because perspective is in my opinion the main overarching theme of the work, which reveals itself through small instances of style such as the above simultaneously with the broader plot. How do we see ourselves, and how do others see us? Who am I, and who or what defines who I am? What happens when how I see myself doesn't match with how others see myself? And to what extent can we impose our internal representations of others, onto the other themselves? These are deep questions that touch at a lot of the components of the human experience, and while Jackson never truly answers any of them, he uses the work to stimulate the reader's thoughts and to ask these questions in a truly artistic way. Coming back to the metafictive aspects of the work, Jackson takes these questions to the next level, drawing a deep comparison between human relations in society, and how humans (in particular you, the human reading Oretsuba) experience media. Indeed, a close reading of Oretsuba will show the protagonists themselves interacting with media in a somewhat metafictive fashion, hinting at how you yourself should be reading Oretsuba -- in a conversation, as if it were with another human.

I looked up many prior reviews of Oretsuba and most of them said absolutely nothing of substance, and the very few that did seemed to miss the mark entirely (despite lavishly praising the work). I think this is a symptom of the above, as a work about the human experience that demands self-insertion and subjective observation is necessarily an extremely personal experience. When you read Oretsuba from your own perspective you will get something necessarily different from my experience, similarly to how we will take away different experiences standing in front of the Mona Lisa.

Humans call media which evoke such subjective and beautiful experiences art. Most humans are not trained to read and understand art; these skills require training, and that training must come from experiencing enough media to be able to distinguish between "art" and "junk." Oretsuba is further complicated by simply being one of the most difficult works in the medium to read (in both the normal and artistic senses of the word) in the first place. But Oretsuba is beautiful precisely because it is not dumbed down. Jackson knows he is producing art, and that his art can only be appreciated by very few. I am glad that I took the time and effort to see Jackson's vision, and I implore anyone reading this who is interested in experiencing art to do the same.
