This thread is for the discussion of Japanese music that regular Japanese people don't actually listen to.
Derivative doujin music, Vocaloid, VSingers, Atarashi Gakko, AniKura, idol songs, etc. go in their respective threads.

I am looking for a concert in specific. On the 18th of Febuary Buck-Tick's youtube did a livestream of a past concert. They had chandeliers over the audience and a giant screen behind them (there was also a sick guitar solo and at one point he was like, cry singing. I've been looking everywhere to figure out which concert is the one they streamed because I'd like to buy the DVD. I know that they're selling a compilation from Tokyo Garden Theater but I'd like to purchase this one instead if I can help it.
Here's a clip from the same concert I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxBdwv1bf48&ab_channel=Luis

I was like, trying to compliment the album by comparing it to the greats of the Japanese mainstream. It was an attempt of flattery.

I have never been to Japan so like. I don't know maybe my comment comes off as cringe due to the lacxk of context but my basic thought on the album was that is was very fresh (despite apparently being released in 2005) my exposure to Japanese music in general has always been through the lens of more pop stuff like ReoL and Daoko so that's why I used that comparison - it's the only reliable point of reference for Japanese music that I have.
I already said that I thought the album cover was pretty erotic.
I liked the raw sound. I was extremely surprised to hear the Midori band actively employing the usage of piano techniques in non-anime styled melodic variations. I always thought that pop music in Japan is this very sort of "specific style" type of entertainment.

However it turns out that Midori & Mariko Gotou have attempted to make it a bit more..."keep it real" so to say.

Yeah it liked the effect where they sometimes let Mariko Gotou sing acapella it establishes

I don't actually speak Japanese, I just hear 15% of the words/phrases that I might know or not at best, and get a vague idea of what the song is about.
Like in one of the songs Mariko sings "esa". So apparently the song is meant tom be like a "tasty snack" of sorts, well that's how I choose to interpret it, I mean, doesn't the listener have the conceptual right to interpret the music in their own unique way???

I only understand Japanese songs when I purposefully decipher the lyrics, the so called "歌詞" but I only do that with Daoko's songs so that's that, I can only understand most of Japanese music somewhat semi-instinctively. Since I believe that leads to a more direct perception of the song, without being clouded by logical spirals of contradiction of the lyrics.

They really aren't, but judy and mary were a big inspiration for some of Mariko's vocal tendencies. They inspired a lot of artist of that time period, actually. Now I know the /jp/ certified true otaku masters of music. I know what I'm gonna look for next.
>>46433945
Well obviously we aren't talking about some #12345 Kenichi Yawnezu idol project but I mean like the real connoisseur musical stuff for those in the know.

Okay I should probably search for some Midori First album 歌詞s....although I kinda doubt lyrics for stuff from 2005 even exist on the Internet.
hmmm I guess I'm gonna have to resort to audio deciphering, converting it to kanji+katakana+hiragana, take out my Tae Kim grammar guide and Jisho dictionary again.
But it seems like the "Midori & Marioko Gotou" stuff is really worth it.

P.S. I listened to some Tommy February (or was it heavenly?) youtube album compilations and gosh that stuff was pretty legit too so I guess she counts as one of the underground "masters" as well. Really makes you think how much of Japan's music has yet to be discovered. I mean this isn't exactly J-POP so it has to be dug out if you're a casual anime otaku musical listener like me

>> No.46435114

>>46434233
P.S. Not to say anything bad about Kenshi Yonezu, I haven't actually listened to his music aside from a couple of song compilations on Youtube so maybe his style is actually good, I wouldn't objectively know enough about it to say it one way or another.

See, this is why I usually always refer to Daoko as a standard when talking about Japanese modern music since it's one of the few things I more or less confidently understand nd I have listened to a lot of her discography so I can use it as a reference for cognitive extrapolation.

> They really aren't
With the sole exception of everything, anon? Mariko talked extensively about how they "copied" almost everything from JAM. It can be clearly heard in the music itself. It's kind of like Hüsker Dü and Nirvana.

The problem with the West regarding Japanese music isn't really in the lack of scope since some guys can dig up even relatively small and niche bands but more in complete lack of contextual knowledge even with the biggest names.

I've listened to JUDY AND MARY years before i was aware of Midori.

Also, Mariko really dislikes when people even mention Midori, she genuinely thinks that it means that they hate her. She even refuses invitations to festivals on that basis.
And speaking of influences, it really surprised me when tricot of all bands named Midori as one of their favourites.

A bit more professional piano experimentation compared to the first one.

Kinda like the "dark version" of the singer Tomoo but that wouldn't make sense chronologically. So maybe it was the influence of Makoto Kawamoto, see >>46415458

Generally, the 2nd album is more positive, melancholic, pretentious than the first album.

Mariko Gotou even tries doing the trademark "anime kawaii" voice on the vocals.

>A bit more professional piano
Yes, Hajime improved a lot over the years. If you watch their lives from 2004-5 and 2009-10 it's almost like two different people.
>So maybe it was the influence of Makoto Kawamoto
It wasn't. It was John Zorn. He was very well known at the time in Japan and Mariko is a huge fan. She still listens to all of his new albums, and he releases them like every other week.
>more positive
There is one positive song - Atashi no outa. It's actually very honest and serious despite sounding like a joke song.
Other than that - no, it's not positive, just less edgy. Anta wa dareya is basically a cry for help(which is still relevant, sadly), but album version doesn't really do it justice.
>trademark "anime kawaii" voice
That's the judy and mary influence. And Mariko did it since the first demo from 2003.

LOSTAGE, they began as post-hardcore and the slowly shifter more toward emo. Their album Guitar is emo masterpiece.

Bluebeard managed to release only one 30 minutes album but they still became one of the most influential emo bands on Japanese scene.

And then it depends if you separate post-hardcore and emo and if yes then how rigidly. Bloodthirstly butchers, eastern youth and Number Girl are probably the BIG three Japanese post-hardcore bands but they also get treated as emo bands depending on the person talking about them. They are all fantastic so give them a listen.

Then if you'll think that you want Number Girl but with more groove, math rock, rapping and more Buddhist outlook on life then go for ZAZEN BOYS, Mukai's (Number Girl's frontman) another band.

>> No.46601647

Bloodthirsty Butchers and Number girl aren't emo in any way.

I'm thinking Project Sekai is based because it promotes more vocaloid. it's done more to promote vocaloid than any of you. it brought dormant producers back to the medium. it promoted existing producers. it included producers who are deceased. you are on the wrong side of history if you are a hater. disliking it is one thing but actively demoting it is dogshit behavior
