Filtering prevents you from having to deal with certain useless posts.
It also shortens the amount of time you have to spend wading through threads, also, at least the script I use for filtering allows you to unhide.
You don't have to deal with spam.
You don't have to deal with people complaining.
You can temporarily filter things to get to threads you want.
The reason boards are bad or good is simply because of the posters and the only problem that the other posters can really cause you is by marginally decreasing the lifespan of your thread.

In other words, it effectively makes the board better, so long as you don't use it for really gay reasons.
