That being said Japan objectively made the wrong move. Rather than going to war they should have tried to reach a diplomatic settlement. Sure that would have hampered all of their conquest ambitions, but they would have most likely managed to maintain control over the already colonized areas.

Still better than losing everything except their mainland.

If they were preparing for war the battleships would have been attached to the Asiatic Fleet in the Philippines. And, of course, half the Navy was in the Atlantic, so it's certainly not the case that "most of the fleet" was in Hawaii.
