I'm going to Kinokuniya for the first time tomorrow or the day after.
What should I expect? How are the prices, selection, and people (staff and most customers alike)? Is it easy to find? I-I've never been to NYC before
I'm not exactly sure what I'd be looking for, probably some merchandise from specific series, magazines, and maybe bento.

>> No.11723189

I could go with you if you want...? Maybe we could grab something to eat before we go too...

Oh anon, you know I would love to do that.
(But no job means the only reason I even have the opportunity to go to NYC is because of family members since it's a Christmas trip, so in short sadly I'm not going alone. Plus I don't really know my way around there yet, s-sorry)

>> No.11723193

Make sure you get SVU's number before you go because they're gonna rape your wallet

>> No.11723199

Expensive. Good selection of manga, they have English and the Jap versions, for more or less the same price as they would be in Borders or something. Manga magazines they have alot of, they should have dengeki, no LO though. Some figs, but nothing worth the money. There are artbooks, but mostly generic stuff. Couple CDs too.

>> No.11723210

>>11723199
Sounds pretty much like the one in Seattle. The CD selection in the Seattle one is actually not too bad, not huge in number but good variety. A bunch of anime and game soundtracks, too.

Tons of cookbooks and stuff like that as well.

>>11723210
NYC's selection at the time I was there was crap, I assume it changes alot.
If someone is planning to take a trip, go to Mitsuwa in NJ instead. Their bookstore is better than Kinokuniya and they have a huge dvd selection. Really good authentic food too.
Also, real Japs shop there and many bring their loli.

Here's my current rating of Kinokuniya:

Mother/child relationship: B
Homosexuality: C

Fire damage: 3.6
Armor: Light

Speed: ★★★☆☆
Overall rating: (´・ω・`)

After a bit of searching over the internet, I stumbled upon an interesting-looking store in Manhattan called Image Anime. Seems to specialize in figures, is it any good?

>> No.11723415

Are there any anime/manga/game-goods shops in the west that are actually worth the time? Not meaning to hate, just my personal experience says no.

In the case I'm wrong, what makes the shops good? Do they have rare or old/vintage stuff?

>> No.11723420

I only go there every few months since It's really expensive and it's about 30 minutes from where I live by subway but they have a lot of great art books, figurines and a whole lot of other stuff. Last December they had a Touhou special for like the whole month and they were selling games and other stuff which was really neat.

Another great place is a few blocks up called Book Off. They mostly carry imported games, music and movies but it's worth checking out.

I remember going to the NYC Nintendo Store the one time I was there a few years back. It was disappointing, they had like a mini-museum of stuff on display, but other than that it wasn't anything special.

As to OP, Kino is expensive, but has a great cute stationary selection and JP language books/manga/mags if you can afford them. Otherwise, you may as well shop online.

I've been there only once before. It's expensive. Maybe it justifies shipping costs, but I ended up not buying anything. I'd rather buy online. I took pictures of some stuff but some woman angrily told me not to.

They had Touhou stuff, too, but it was only one tiny section. What surprised me was that the doujin games and albums cost more than the official games themselves. They didn't have any translated doujinshi from what I saw. Figures were overpriced. Lots of weeaboos but that's to be expected. Overall, I'd stay inside and order from my room.

I'm curious, is there anything worth of visiting at Central Florida, Washington DC and Seattle? Not like some regular Japanese manga/figure store or something, but a very notable place.
Maybe an event even, like that Final Fantasy symphony concert that just recently took place at Boston and Miami (http://www.ffdistantworlds.com/past-events).).

I pretty much don't travel, but I might be at those places at some point in time. In fact, I was at Washington DC this week. I regret I didn't prepare beforehand - all I could find without any beforehand preparation was a Chinese district I accidentally ran into. (More like discovered than found, since I wasn't looking for anything at all, just was walking around the city.) I though that I could at least get some Japanese food there, but having found a restaurant and ordered something I though would be at least decent, I was disappointed, since I couldn't even finish half of the expensive dish. Well, at least this experience left some fun memories of the trip. Lesson learned: don't order fish dishes if you don't generally like eating fish.

Check out what they got in kino, make a list and buy it online. If you're going to spend money there eat at the cafe, they got nice authentic shit like melon pan.

Take a trip to book off instead, which is a couple blocks down. They have rare out of print manga for discount prices, art books, figures, games and music. It's not the best for new stuff but you find some really awesome shit there sometimes.

In that case I would prefer that octopus, which starts moving as if it was alive when it's being cut due to some chemistry/reflexes. I heard it squeezes one's tongue when eaten, must be orgasmic.
