Planning to start Alicetale later on tonight.
I'm also probably going to pickup that new CUBE game. I really liked Natsu no Ame, but never got around to playing Your Diary, so it'll be interesting to see how the brand is doing. Plus one of the heroines looks like she's basically a copy-pasted Midori, and since she was my favorite in Natsu no Ame, that's definitely a plus.

the woman has never used a computer before in her life, and it shows. Would've been vastly improved if writer's hard on for corea was enough motivation to bother learning more than a handful of names before giving up and naming the rest of the characters Smith.

the part where Hyun-ae has her tongue cut out of her mouth wasn't as shocking and dramatic as it was foreshadowed to be, but the lesbian letters were fun. The rest of the stories were snorefests, but *hyun is cute and treating her like a doormat and still making her fall head over heals in love with you made at least one play through worth doing. Subsequent play throughs will take 20 mins, tops.

>> No.10150640

It wasn't terrible, but I never was able to get used to the names or typing in "quit" instead of "exit" for the terminal parts. Hyun was pretty cute though.

I agree. Although to Christine's credit, *Hyun was like, "You've figured it out by now, right?"
That was satisfying. It was like the author paused the game for a second and said, "Look, you know what's going to happen now, I know what's going to happen now, let's not beat around the bush and get on with it."

Actually, that sounds lewd.

Lewd things with Christine-chan...

Fate is meh, but actually a good starting point.

However, Tsukihime, its predecessor is quite good, and far better than fate.

Maji De Watashi ni koishinasai is a good place to start, as well, but will is so advanced in format to most visual novels it'll leave you with a wierd feeling when trying to play other older visual novels.

Muv-Luv as a series is a goddamn masterpiece. The first half of the first game, most of the 5 routes are garbage, but everything past that is glorious.

It's not really that hard though. Especially since you're on /jp/ you probably spend most of your time on weeaboo hobbies. I forget the name of the blog, but what it said about exposure being the best way to learn really is true. It doesn't take long at all to be able to read kana as good as the English alphabet. Then kanji can be learned just be seeing them over and over again in VNs, niconico, EGS, etc and Rikaichan. Grammar is relatively easy too. I've never formally studied kanji and I can still read average-level VNs fine.

Every time you post here it's the same damn thing. No one can help you. You can only help yourself. If you actually cared you'd realize just how many resources are at your disposal, for free, for learning Japanese. Since you're 18, I'm assuming you're going to college. Check to see what local schools have a good East Asian languages program and go there. You'll be reading VNs by the summer after your sophomore year.

As for my own personal experience, I read MuvLuv Alternative as my first Japanese VN after 2 years of study and recently just finished Muramasa after 4 years.

Red riding hood was definitely best designed (though I think she'd be better with a few inches more in hair length). but my favorite combat character is the little brawler whose name I forgot. Fate/Stay Night. If you like it, wait for F/HA to come out. Don't forget it's predecessor
Tsukihime.

Kawawa Shoujo seems to be fairly popular. I recommend it, but it does turn some people off VNs just because of the idea. It's a really good experience.

ef is fantastic. It isn't really babby's first VN, but it's still easy to go though and it's very enjoyable.

Muv Luv, from what I hear, is really good. I still need to check it out myself.

Clannad for the feels. Although, to complete it, you're going to need a bit of time finishing it, though, if you want to go through all the routes.

The Chaos;Head/Steins;Gate trilogy is pretty good, although Robotic;Notes is only on Xbox 360/PS3, so unless you speak Nipponese, it's going to be hard to get.

I agree that these are good for beginners, I have a few warnings:

- Katawa Shoujo gets a lot of hate but it is a good, solid work that's also a good choice for fisrt-timers to the medium. Play Shizune route first though; it's not great but the other routes are better.

- minori, the studio that made ef, is REALLY hit and miss, and their games can be quite boring. ef further tends to be quite polarizing (I personally HATED it, especially the first chapter) in addition to being long. I'd recommend picking up Wind -a breath of heart- and doing a route or two in that first so you know what you're in for.

- The Nitroplus science trilogy sort of declined with each subsequent release IMO. Chaos;Head is really worth playing but if S;G doesn't impress you then you should probably give up on R;N.

You should play at least one Key/Tactics game; they're classics and you should at least be familiar with the studio's work. MOON. is my favorite, although I wouldn't call it an entry-level VN, as it's fairly weird in addition to being old.

In English you have your choice of MOON., ONE, Kanon, Clannad (has a complete but severely uneven patch), its sequel Tomoyo After, Planetarian, and Little Busters!, with projects underway for Air, Little Busters! EX, Kud Wafter and Rewrite (as well as a Clannad retranslation and Rewrite's fandisc at some unspecifried future point).

Finally, I recommend the Infinity series (Never7/Ever17/Remember11, with two more games now being translated).

So about Fate/Stay Night...

I watched Fate/Zero and thought it was fantastic. Heard loads of hype about the Fate/Stay VN and so I started playing it. Ended up dropping it and not sure if I should pick it back up again.

Now it never really drew me in. I absolutely detested Shirou for one thing. His stupidity was infuriating. Without a doubt one of my most hated MCs of all time. But the real buzz killer was that god awful mana transfer bullshit. Now I'm no prude and no stranger to eroge but that shit was so ridiculous and so immersion breaking that I dropped it not long after. That alone wouldn't have been enough to turn me off but like I said I was never really feeling it to begin with.

But still I hear so much praise for this VN that I keep wondering what I'm missing. Exactly what is it about Fate/Stay that people love so much? I liked Fate/Zero for the visuals, the soundtrack, the characters. I got none of that feeling from F/S. It seemed shallow as shit in comparison.

So really. What am I missing? Because nothing I saw came even close to justifying the hype. Does it pick up (like pick up A LOT) later on and in the other routes? Should I give it another shot?

Honestly, if you didn't enjoy what you've already read of FSN, I wouldn't bother picking it back up again.

Type-Moon has some really rabid fans, but I can't really figure out why. Tsukihime was decent for its time and considering it was a doujin game, but hasn't aged well. FSN has some interesting world building but that's about it; it took me more than a month to slog through Heaven's Feel. Fate/Zero being written by Urobuchi instead of Nasu is the only thing that made it as good as it was, IMO.

>> No.10158001

>>10157924
First of all, you're comparing an anime to a porno game. Personally, I found Fate/zero (the anime) to be kind of boring given that it's a prequel and suffers a lot from the constraints FSN had placed on it. Like, Saber had zero character development for example.

The love FSN, I would guess, comes from the well-established lore, the characters, and the battles. Especially the last one. For every kerfuffle that Shirou gets himself into, he's always the extreme underdog making the fighting tense and outcomes hard to predict. You don't really get that kind of tension with Kiritsugu given that he's a trained killer and all. If you don't like any of these 3 things, well, this game isn't for you.

Everyone complains about Shirou being annoying Fate, but I think most people find him pretty tolerable in UBW and Heaven's Feel. Also, if you don't want mana tranfer sex you can always play Realta Nua. Or just skip through those scenes and pretend they never happened.

I don't know why, but for some reason, when I played Suzuno's route I actually felt quite sad knowing that I will never have, for lack of a better word, such an unrealistic loving relationship. Well, just finished Muramasa, so I'll just mention a bunch of possibly unrelated thoughts and impressions. The ending of Maou-hen was beautiful. I wish the bad/alternative ends weren't so short. Especially Chachamaru and a certain ending withSayo's Tsurugi Also, there were a couple things that were mentioned early on and seemed like they were going to be super important, but were never mentioned again. For example, wasn't Ichijou given a tsurugi arm at the end of chapter 2? Then it just got replaced later and nothing ever happened with it. I really liked how pretty much every character was important, and how the true route built upon the previous two. Lastly, I still think Sorimachi was kind of a dumb villian. And the bad guy from chapter one was just painful. Pretty much everyone from Rokuhara and GHQ were great though.

Well, I actually felt each character actually had a chance to shine throughout the game which is more than I can say for similar games. Ichijou and Kanae aren't used that much in Maou, but they had the other two routes entirely for themselves so to speak, and the spotlight could then be focused on other characters. Same thing for Shishio for example, he doesn't do much in general but I felt his part in Kanae's route was great.

Well sure!

The event was on Saturday (the 1st) in Sendai, and is one of a few joint promotional events that Innocent Grey and Liar-soft have been putting on for their new games. The other events were in Tokyo and Osaka, but this one was in Sendai. I was taking the JLPT in Morioka (the next big city over) this weekend anyhow, so the timing was absolutely perfect.

It was a free event, but to get in you had to have reserved a copy of Gahkthun and/or KnS 2. I'd already done that long ago, so I showed up at the store, printout of my preorder in hand, and browsed around while I waited.

The store is about the size of a closet with really close-together shelves and all kinds of stuff packed in there, and the effect was nice, like you were browsing through someone's eroge-crammed finished basement. I'd call it the most welcoming game shop I've ever been in in Japan. They also had a small doujin section, which had some games and some books but was like 60% Okujou no Yurirei-san doujinshi.

They'd made little displays here and there for big new games that were coming out; all were quite nice, but the Gahkthun one was AWESOME. One of the staff members apparently constructed a 3D model of Tesla's cybernetic glove thing, complete with a running clock in the center knuckle and blue lights in it that flickered off and on. Below that was a screen playing the promo OP, and hanging above were big portraits of the student council members with a panel of (handpainted I think) gold and silver gears. Fucking amazing, I want a portable version of this shrine for my house.

(Also that Sharnoth FV promo poster they have up on the wall there, holy shit.)

(Let me apologize in advance for not taking very many/very good quality pictures. I'd blame my phone, but honestly I was just too nervous/full of anticipation to remember to take good ones.)

The event was scheduled to begin at 3. I'd gotten there a bit after 2, so around 2:30 people had started trickling into the shop. The crowd was decent size (by Tohoku standards) but not overwhemling; there were even three other women there that I saw.

At 2:45 the staff made a call for event attendees to line up outside, so we all moved into the outside hall (which was plastered floor to ceiling with posters and decorations and such; they had a giant reproduction of the Gahkthun poster covering the entire surface of the shop door, and I was standing right in front of a life-size Erika standup from Alicetale. I really should have gotten a photo of the hall). It was a bit chilly, although not uncomfortable, but the staff still came around to hand out pocket heat packs after we'd been standing there for a while. Everyone says this, but it really is the little gestures of kindness that make Japan really special IMO; you'd never see that happen on Best Buy's Black Friday line.

There was a little bit of a delay getting started, but by 3:30 they were ready and the shop staff started leading people upstairs. They checked our proof of game preorder at the entrance, gave everyone a Phantasmagoria card of Tesla and Neon, and showed us into into the event room. This place was almost hilariously tiny; it was about a third the size of the eroge sales floor, which was quite small to begin with - with everyone sitting on the floor just to be able to accommodate all the people there, the room was only four seated adults wide. I'm pretty sure it was just part of their staff office that had been curtained off on two sides. That said, it was bright and homey like the shop, with Gahkthun and Kara no Shoujo 2 posters all over the room and a merchandise display table at the back of recent goodies that each company had put out, being watched over by this very cool papercraft model of Tesla's mech here.

At the front of the room was a low card table skirted with more posters, and once we had all crammed in somehow, the staff brought out the guests: Kuina Yanbaru from Liar and Anzu-sama from Innocent Grey (both reps), as well as Miki Sugina. They introduced themselves, the staff handed out cards for us to write questions on, and then the event began!

Sorry, that took longer than I thought.

So anyway, the guests were seated at the front, quite close to the event audience; the mood was really relaxed and there was a lot of informal banter among the three guys in between the game-focused discussion. It was really nice, homey and fun.

- They opened with talk of the Liar-soft and Innocent Grey collaboration, which I'd been hoping we would hear about, but they either didn't talk about the fine details of how it came to be or else I missed it :( It was confirmed that the BGM Festival back in September was the first time they worked together, and it seems like the people from the respective companies just hit it off and decided, with that and also the aspect of their brands as being sort of unusual and heavily story-focused in comparison to the mainsteam, that a partnership made sense, so the dual release events are the next stage in that and hopefully the beginning of something more (I hope so too!!).

Here's a better picture of the top part of the instore display (not my photo; it's from Yanbaru's Twitter).

- What I did catch was the part about how the two companies' head staffers got together a band (the "Human Sacrifice Band" lol) for a one-off performance at BGM Festival. They wanted to include Anzu, but he has no musical talent whatsoever, so they decided to use him as a cheering section instead, and he ended up dancing while shaking maracas behind the rest of the band, and apparently stealing the show. A bunch of people in the crowd at the event were encouraging him to dance again, and Yanbaru and Sugina kept making comments like "hmmm, we'll answer that question/give out some more hints for Lot44/etc. ...if Anzu dances!" and asking the staff to bring some maracas and stuff.

- Liar-soft started as a big group of writers who got together to form an eroge company but then had to recruit the artists from here and there along the way. That's why they don't have any real in-house artists still and change artstyles regularly, and also why they tend to prioritize story and their games get pretty experimental/weird on that front, so their company is the only one who puts out things like oiran-pimping SLGs or the Steampunk games which are about 95% story and allegory and the rest is really non-explicit sex.

Or as one convo put it:
guy in crowd: "I was wondering why all your games tend to be... unusual..."
Yanbaru: "You mean (stuff like) Onna Yukizumo, right?"
(everyone laughs)

- There was some basic discussion of the setting and plot for each of the new games, which was mostly stuff the official sites have already said, but Yanbaru made one interesting comment about how in the Steampunk Earth and Kadath up to this point, all the industrialized sociaties run completly on steam power, so the coming of Tesla to that setting is also the advent of electricity in that world and the other characters view him as this mysterious presence, something like a magician. I hadn't thought of that before myself, but it'll be cool to see how this development influences the world setting in general from this game on.

- Apparently Okujou no Yurirei was a really big hit for Liar, with sales far exceeding expections, so Yanbaru talked a bit about their surprise at its popularity and how they're now thinking of doing more games like that in the future. One guy asked about the possibility of a sequel or a similar game being developed next, which had a bunch of people agreeing, including the store manager (of Seagull Nagata-Chou, the game shop where this was being held; forgot to mention that before) - apparently he really likes Yurirei, which is why they stocked all that doujin. Yanbaru said it was definitely possible, and "we'll see about that after we get the Gahkthun sales figures, hint hint!"

- In this same conversation, Sugina mentioned that he's all for yuri eroge, and would like to do one at some point (to which I have to say only FUCK YES PLEASE). Several people reacted very positively to this too, with one guy bringing up the yuri Kara no Shoujo (空ノ少女) April Fools gag site; Anzu said people still ask them about that, so they see the demand for a game like that. Sugina: "I don't know when, but I intend to make it happen."

- Someone asked Sugina "how does it feel to kill off the characters you designed?" and he answered that he puts extra effort into making the ones who are going to die attractive and likeable so that the audience will be even more upset. (Anzu: "He always does that! When I was reading the prototype of the game and I would tell him that I really liked such and such a character, he'd kind of smile and say 'ah, is that so?', and then every time, a few scenes later, '......ohhh...'.")

- Some talk about seiyuu yielded the mention that male eroge seiyuu are a lot more expensive to hire than female ones, which I didn't know (the crowd sounded surprised as well).

- Anzu refers to himself in the third person, the moe-girl way. It has the effect of being quite charming.

After about an hour of talk and answering a lot of questions, they decided to start the janken game. These are a common and fun part of anime, game, and idol events and such, where the guests bring prizes with them to give away to winners who are determined by a big game of rock paper scissors - everyone who wants to try for the prize raises their hands, the guest will stand up front and call jan-ken-pon, then show their hand. Those with a losing hand have to lower their arms (honor system), and this repeats until one or however many winners are left.

Sometimes at events, they're really strict and you even can't continue if you tie, but the InnoGrey guys, proving again how awesome they are, decided that both winners and people who tied could move on. I'm not bad at janken but I was sure happy to have my odds raised 33%; you'd better believe I wanted those fucking posters.

Each company brought stuff to give away, so Sugina got up to display InnoGrey's first: two big posters, with the (stunning) promo art of Yukino and Satsuki, signed by Sara Ayumi and Mahiru fucking Notsuki (there were gasps of amazement and delight all over the room when he unrolled that one). Furthermore, they decided that rather than giving them away separately, they would give both posters to one winner. Now comes the part that I still can't quite believe happened.

I raised my hand with everyone else, Sugina called jan-ken-pon... and I tie, same hand (I think rock) as him.

Second round, I tie again, and like 4/5 of the remaining people get taken out.

Third round, I manage ANOTHER tie; all the hands I can see go down, and there's a soft murmur of "ooooohhhh" in the room; looking behind me, it's now down to me and only one other guy.

Fourth round comes, and all three of us play rock, so we need a tiebreaker.

Fifth round. Sugina plays paper. I play scissors for the first time. Other guy... plays rock.

Also bidaily pic, still need the first two.

I don't quite realize what has just happened. I sit there shock stunned for a full minute frozen in surprise and joy. Everyone is looking at me by now and I can feel my face turning red.

The guests all congratulate me. Anzu rolls up the posters and passes them across to me, and I stammer out my thanks as I accept them. Sugina comments that this is the first time that a woman has won the janken contest at any of their events, and says omedetou again; at this point I'm shaking a little in addition to blushing. I think I bowed and thanked them again but now it's all a happy blur.

The game continues with Liar-soft's prizes; they were in a rush to come up with something, but they got Hikari Sakurai (!!!!) to sign some of the double-A4-size promotional fliers, and they're giving away three of them.

I felt like it'd be greedy to try for them considering what an awesome prize I'd just won, so I sat the first two out, but I threw for the last one and made it to the second-to-last round of seven (down to me and four other guys) that time. I will probably never be this lucky at that game ever again.

One of the winners let me see his flier up close later, and she'd signed them (along with "yoroshiku onegai shimasu!") with fluorescent orange marker, and her writing is very broad, with big, every so slightly sloppy kanji. A little surprising since you might imagine from her work that she'd sign her name really boldly, Lovecraft-style, or in super florid cursive with a fountain pen or something, but it was probably even more endearing that way. Gap moe.

(The posters weren't like most glossy promos, but printed on heavy textured Japanese paper like art prints. I still cannot believe I won this shit.)

Before the talk part was concluded for the day, there was one last surprise: a screening of the Kara no Shoujo 2 opening movie, which according to Anzu had just been completed two days ago, making us the first in the country to see it. Typical InnoGrey opening; it was gorgeous. Also features a burning tree at the beginning; wonder how that's going to play in with the game, since their abstract symbolism always ends up being somehow related.

Finally, the panel concluded and everyone thanked the guests with applause, but next they announced a Sugina signing for all audience; shop staff gave everyone a pair of postcards (same images as the posters) and then lined us up. Since the place is so small, the line wrapped around the room and back out into the entrance hall. Returning to the room, Sugina was seated at the front and was signing one postcard per person (your choice) along with your name. I wanted to say something to him but only ended up being able to sperg babble about "hurr you sure draw purdy ladies" and reiterate how I hoped he'd do a yuri game.

He is! He has a really wicked sense of humor and his answers to questions were so interesting. Also, he is really, REALLY cute. It's a good thing he became an illustrator in the end, because if he weren't drawing gorgeous kimono and dead girls for InnoGrey he'd be Japan's prettiest featherweight boxer now, and what a shame if he were to let his nice face get all busted up.
It was awful; I had several chances to talk to him and all I could do was stammer out thank-yous and fail repeatedly to make eye contact; I must have looked down at his stylin' jeans like three times as often as his face. (I was too shy to ask if I could take a picture of/with him, but those are his legs in the corner of this shot.)

As the signing was going on, Yanbaru and Anzu had set up a sale table at the other end of the room with some past event merchandise; Ritatsukin goods, the booklets and things they sold at Comiket (or at whatever cycling enthusiasts' event - Sugina and a few other InnoGrey members are big on biking and there's even a company team, which explains some of their merchandise, like the fans with drawings of Touko in a bike racing outfit), and stuff like that. They also moved the mecha papercraft up to the front of the room, next to a monitor playing both game's openings on loop, and brought out Sugnia's race bike with the back wheel decorated so people could take photos.

Most of the stuff being sold I already had, but I did snag a Steampunk 5th Anniversary book, which was being extremely cool. When the signing was done and the crowd was starting to thin out, the remaining audience members, shop staff, and guests kind of stayed there to mingle and talk, and I chatted a little with some other attendees and then thanked everyone, for the great prize and for coming all the way to Tohoku in the first place, before heading back to the train station.

Afaik they're having one last event at the Akihabara Denkigai Matsuri (...in Shinjuku. wtf.) on December 28th. This is also the first day of Comiket, so if any anons will be in Tokyo that day, you should really, really go. This one doesn't require a game preorder, and it will be fun, plus you coming to the event will show them how many foreign weebs like their games.

Younger than I expected. The guys I talked to, and from appearances most of the crowd, were mid-to-late twenties, with a handful of guys who seemed a little older than that. The few women in attendance were all quite young; one of them might have been mid-thirties (she was wearing kind of overexaggeratedly youthful clothing, with plastic accessories and striped long socks, which looked like it could be an attempt to play down her age) but the others all looked like college students.

Started Fal route yesterday.

I'm beginning to get the sneaking suspicion that something's not quite right here. Is she just kind of codependent, or is all hell about to break loose?

She'd be a very cute yandere, on the other hand.

So, how is Kazoku Keikaku? I've seen comments about it being really outdated, but I feel like it's something I should read anyway considering its status among eroge fans, and for a taste of early Romeo writing.

Are you Asian so that you blended in with the crowd or are you far-west gaijin so that you stood out like a sore thumb?

One thing I always wanted to ask an eroge developer was if they realized that the vast majority of Engrish they put in their games is horribly ungrammatical and if they realized that anyone who knew English cringes upon seeing it (though I guess this precludes 99% of their readers). Also, if they realized that they can pretty much fix all of their spelling mistakes with 2 seconds on Google.

It has a very concise style that is really neat and really clash compared to your average text in eroge.
It's also pretty heartwarming, it's not without faults though and it definitely shows its age.
So yeah it's worth reading.
