How do people even watch soaps?

I wanted to watch Hollyoaks because I heard good things, but there are 3,480 episodes. That's 1450 hours, which is over 60 days.

However my mum makes time every single night to watch Coronation Street and Eastenders without fail, so I guess you have to keep up to date with them.

Half the fun seems to be having a chat about the latest episode with other people who like them anyway, so trawling through the old episodes seems even more pointless...

Even so, I'd like to know the storylines of all the characters. Surely they must reference them. If John says, "This reminds me of the time I was addicted to drugs!" I'd like to confidently remember that particular plot thread.

that doesnt really happen, the worst feeling you get in that way is when they reference characters who were on the show before you watched it.
so they're like "Oh god Tracy is coming back", "oh god everyone Tracy is coming back how terrible, remember that one time where Tracy did that one thing" and you're like who da FUG is tracy
THAT is why soaps are stressful
but you have to throw caution to the wind and just start watching.
Tomorrow is Monday, start your week off watching 1 new soap and try to follow it till the end of the week!

What happens in soaps?

I mean, they on just about every day and they're at least twenty minutes long.

Every time I walk past the telly and a soap's on, something is happening. A couple are having an argument, someone's daughter is in hospital, blah blah blah.

What do they do when these things DON'T happen? Are Coronation Street and Walford just the most exciting places ever?
