So, I've been getting into Mahjong recently. but all I've been finding is like flash and solitaire things. what's the best non-browser Mahjong program?

>> No.11362147

Just use tenhou, janryumon is okay but a pain to set up.

Something wrong with tenhou.net?

Theres probably numerous saki or akagi themed games, but those usually have really silly rules.

I haven't checked that out yet, ill give it a try, Its just all the flash/browser sites seem to be kinda fishy if im just searching for them.

Isn't mahjong that game where you stack tiles into shapes? I like the one that looks like a castle.

That's solitaire mahjong, not quite the same but it can be fun.

Pretty sure tenhou has a downloadable version, it is typically for premium users or something, but you can find downloads for it

Maybe I'm making this all up

Basically, Tenhou is the best thing you can get online.
You can't play against bots though.
If anything else, I like the niconico mahjong thingy, because lolis and bots.

I use Janryumon mobile for single player on an android tablet. There is a PC version but it's a pain to setup and I think it's sort of p2p, I played a couple of CPU matches and then it didn't allow me to do any more, I assume it wanted money or w/e virtual currency substitutes for money. The mobile version you can play without even setting up an account.

For PC tenhou is probably the best but since I don't play head to head with other people because I'm still pretty bad I do CPU and I don't really care for tenhou's CPU matches, especially not being able to disable the timer.

If you just want to play standard mahjong with your PC, tenhou is the best place.
However, if you want to play mahjong on mobile device, janryomon would be a better choice. The only problem is you can only play a few games a day for free. (3 quarters or 2 halves) Both platforms have a lot of users and the average waiting time before the game starts is relative short than others.

Janitor is a piece of shit fucking loser.

He's delusional. No one in real life, or online, can stand his autistic bullshit. No one likes it. Do you hear that janitor? Everyone fucking hates you, it is not a select few people, it is the majority of this board. There is a huge problem with that and guess whose fault is? It's yours you fucking dipshit, stop blaming everyone else.

The mods even hate you. You think they like dealing with your 70 stupid ass ban requests everyday? No, they don't. Why don't you just fucking leave already.

JRM is completely pay to play on PC.
You have to buy points and you use that to join ladder matches, unranked and even bot games. You can get a return on the points through winning big hands or by finishing challenges, but since that is obviously RNG based making anything back at least once a day is nearly impossible.

Stay the hell away from JRM. I had an acc on there with 1000+ games that is suddenly not accepted anymore.
I've been playing the mobile one for a bit and it wouldn't be half bad if it weren't for the cap on games you can play per day (without paying) and the frequent disconnects even when connected through mobile and wlan.

Tenhou is still the best there is and it still has the same old flaws too. Their Rate system is just bad. Getting 4 dan and R1800 at the same time requires lots of luck and can be very, very frustrating and damn near impossible once you have too many games.

If you want to learn how to play by playing, janryumon mobile has unlimited CPU games, though the AI isn't very strong.
Or just play in any unranked lobby on tenhou.

Tenhou to play against people, gamedesign.jp's mahjong to play against bots, and a number of old roms that run on M.A.M.E. for shitty mahjong games with girls getting naked as you win hands.

Don't forget the ones on older japanese PCs as well. PC98 probably has the best collection.

Yeah, but downloading PC98 games is a pain in the ass.

It's much easier to find M.A.M.E. roms. I wish the dude that runs pc98.org made a torrent with his collection instead of only showing us what games he has and having only 5 or so uploaded.

Not really. The theory (or one of the theories) stated that by purchasing an ID you could have a higher win rate (above 30%) before getting dealt more shitty hands.
I would be the first to call bullshit on it if it didn't seem so fucking plausible.

>> No.11363148

I tried to, but the tactics are pretty fucking hard. I feel it's more experience-driven than chess really, and seeing as how I have barely no experience at all, it got boring pretty soon.

I don't remember a single time I won.

Indeed.

I'd rather invest that time playing 2hu. And even then, the time you need to invest to 1cc every 2hu in lunatic isn't even as much as you'd need to invest to become a master of go.

>> No.11363310

>>11363215
But at least returns from the investments are immediately apparent. It's not like mahjong where a win depends on luck and all you can do is slightly tip the probability to your favor. (You'd literally need to average hundreds of games with similar opponents to see if you've gotten any better.) It's not even like chess, where wins are more likely to occur due to opponent's slip of concentration rather than your superior tactics. You learn new things every day and you see it.
