What gives you the impression that it's J->C->E?

In his farewell post he writes, "It has been a good run. Going from not being able to understand a word of Japanese in anime to being actively involved in making Japanese media more accessible to West, I feel that I’ve come a long way."

Doesn't that mean he knows Japanese?

Regardless, I couldn't help find it funny that he wrote such a long farewell post, making it seem like he had been at it for years, but then I looked at their project list, and they've only released about 1 VN and a few anime OVAs.

So basically there would be like 4 types of articles. Project announcements, releases, cancellations, and then of course drama.

Guess there could be brief reviews of gameplay vns to show off how it plays or something?

Maybe interviews with "famous" tlers who can describe the process. But I figure anyone interested in this kind of stuff already knows how it goes. Then again I worked as a QC so maybe thats just me.

Back in May, Lemnisca asked on their Twitter whether people would be interested in a partial patch for ABCD routes. Not sure whether they're actually planning to release one soon or if they decided against it.

On the one hand, I'm really looking forward to I/O. On the other hand, I'm already reading several great VNs (currently juggling Grisaia and Konosora, have Sharnoth temporarily stalled) and I know I'll stall everything else the moment any I/O patch is released.

As for the torrent, any PC version is 'revision II' (that's just the name of the PC version). It's on the FTP, I can't help you with a torrent though.

Now, I'm not defending the list, nor saying Kira Kira is better than Ever17 (I disagree), but it must be noted that apparently Kira Kira has great writing in Japanese. They're both pretty badly translated, but if they were well-translated there would be a noticeable difference in writing quality. EGS puts them pretty close together, with Ever17 rated 92/89 and Kira Kira rated 85/84.

Hm, I get the feeling there's something wrong with the translation (accuracy-wise), but I'm not fluent enough to be able to tell what exactly is wrong with it. ('It is strange' and 'I want to meet you right now' don't look right, but I can't tell what the text does say.)

But one thing is clear even to me: this guy leaves all connotations out of his translation; the stuff the editor has to make clear is left out entirely, making it impossible for the editor to do a decent job on that. '今日は寒いね。' is not a statement 'Today is cold.'. It has that meaning, but it's more like 'It's cold today, huh?'. It's up to the editor to write that in a way that doesn't sound as retarded as when I write it, but if the translator translates it as 'Today is cold' the editor has nothing to work with.

No, but let me if I can offer some advice about your current situation:

Some basic assumptions:
1) You can still talk to your translator. Nothing's going to get better if you can't talk to him.her
2) They're willing to listen to feedback. And by feedback I means that they're willing to work with you to better improve themselves (and vice versa), not dictation of what they should be doing 'because you said so'.
3) They fluently speak English, and not as the ESL type. If they aren't fluent in the language they're translating into, then they have no business translating.

So, those withstanding,:
1) Are they well rested and not translating at odd hours? From experience translation quality severely declines the closer one is to falling asleep. There is a notable difference between things translated at say, 7 PM versus midnight. If your translator, like me, is translating after they get home from work, make sure they're not translating -so- late that it's impairing their quality.

2) How fast are they translating? Lines/day? Translating takes time, a lot more time than people give it credit for. Unless they are a wizard (which they are not given what was posted earlier), they're going to need a lot of time to translate something correctly. For example, I get through 60 lines/day on average, with a standard deviation of 20 lines. If they're trying to do significantly more than this, it's very possible they're rushing and thus mistranslating.

Translation is a long, thankless process. If they're not doing this for themselves, they're setting things up to go poorly. They need to be ready to commit 2-4 YEARS for translating, working every day for hours on end. But, if you can work through some of the things I mentioned here you're more likely to see some success with your project.

Any thoughts thoughts on JAST no longer printing hardcopies for mangagamer?

Their own hard copies setup isn't going to be done until the end of the month and rightstuf has just pulled mangagamer stuff because they no longer have any product to sell. I imagine in two weeks, other retailers probably will too.

Course' this could also means that if other retailers temporarily don't have any of their games for sale and mangagamer does get it's hard copies sales up, more people would be buying directly through them.

Unfortunately, I only get 3-4 hours to work on a given day at best. Also, English is my language of fluency, so I have to spend a good deal of time making sense to the sentence and then blending it into the overall story. For example (msg tags removed due to character limits):

;//私もね? 今まで、いいなぁって思った男の人、全然いなかったわけじゃないの
I've also known a few men that I found to be really attractive.

;//だけど、それだけ……。好きになったりお付き合いしたいって思ったことないのね
But, that's all it was.... I was more interested in the idea of dating someone than actually building a relationship with them.

;//そう、先生の頭の中には、ずっとずっと、あの男がいた。そこだけ、俺と違うところだ。
I can only imagine she's referring to her old Sensei.

;//俺は漠然と誰かと付き合いたいって思ったことはあっても、先生ほど真剣に誰かを好きになったことってないと思う……。
That obsessive, yet passive, feeling of chasing someone, wanting someone... is completely different from what a real relationship feels like.

;//俺、今だから白状しますけど、先生を追いかけようって思った切っ掛けが……
To be honest.... there is something that I should tell you....

;//例の郁哉との恋人勝負のことを話した。そして、花恋の手助け……色々なアイテムを使ったことも。
This girlfriend challenge, using Karen's items.....

;//先生を好きになった切っ掛けがあまりにいい加減で……自分でも情けない。というより――。
Although it was no longer the case, I had been blindly chasing Sensei in the manner we just described.

It can be. I understand that it's an aspect of Japanese minimalism; the revisiting of phrases and ideas as the persons involved come to understand them.

It doesn't translate over very well because it's a cultural thing. Unfortunately the translators who don't understand that tend to write repetitive lines that completely miss the point, and thus ruin the whole thing.

So, don't feel too obliged to keep the literal version, especially in cases where a literal translation destroys the meaning.

>Any thoughts thoughts on JAST no longer printing hardcopies for mangagamer?
MangaGamer let itself become financially dependent on a competitor that has a history of suddenly releasing better products to outcompete any competitors that happen to pop up, and which is the only other major company in the market. Now JAST pulls the rug from under MangaGamer's feet, what a surprise. I totally did not see this coming, not at all.

I warned them about this like two years ago when they first started cooperating with JAST. But I don't really care about MangaGamer anymore anyways, so what will happen will happen. Let's hope MoeNovel starts improving like 2008/2009 MangaGamer, otherwise we'll never see JAST releases anymore.

Anyone ever going to translate Alice to Eternal and/or Wrigglui?

Theoretically they could be fine if they can get their own hardcopy printing up in a timely manner. They're certainly doing well when it comes to exposure

ex: Observe the number of JAST releases that ignorant people attribute to mangagamer, because mangagamer actually releases games.

>but secret art of translating/editing VNs?

Basically, you become familiar enough with Japanese culture and general language that you can mostly understand the text with the help of a dictionary.

Then you occasionally post some snippets online, hope someone can review them for you, and go from there.

A perfect translator is one fluent in both languages, but you can get away with being mediocre in the original language and fluent in the translated one. As long as you can make it sound good in the end language most readers won't care. It's not like they actually understand the source anyways.

Importantly, you have to be willing to put in the time to smooth your translation so the glitches aren't apparent to a non-native speaker.

Just remember, if you're doing this for anyone other than yourself, don't bother.

Can anyone give me advice on extracting and reinserting text?

Normally I would just start translating and then ask around for someone willing to hack the game. However, the game I'm planning to work on is a shitty nukige, and I'd rather not waste someone's time on something so trivial.

The game is Harama Santa no Nakadashi Merry Christmas!! (http://vndb.org/v5766).). And the game data is packed in a file named data.xp3.

I found those tools really didn't help me very much. I found better tools by googling. If you wait something like 36 hours or so I can post them, but I'm away from my main computer right now.

I remember they were called something like ExtractData and xp3tools. And there was a third one for decrypting encrypted xp3 files.

Yeah it's ExtractData, xp3tools, and Crass GUI. The latter for encrypted data files.
