I apologize if this is a bad place to ask since it might be a bit too irrelevant for the thread but I couldn't think of a better place for my question:

I recently got into STGs a few months back and have fallen completely in love with them. However, I find myself from the beginning till present to, at times, becoming shaking with frustration. I thought it would pass as time went on and I got used to them but I still find myself raging like a spoiled child when things get too sour.

Does anyone else go through this? How do you deal with it, or is it just a personal issue of mine?

No other type of game can get me so frustrated, but on the plus side when I do really well or overcome something I've been attempting for awhile it feels near orgasmic.

Sorry again if this isn't the best place to ask or blogshit.

You have to become more accustomed to failure and a slow rate of progress. Unlike in jrpgs and other genres, personal improvement is neither regular nor monotonic in shmups. As a case study: say you're practicing some super difficult spellcard, which you capture about 20% of the time right now. You study it, learn how to deal with certain cases, whatever, and you internally feel like you've "learned" the card. Even with this learned feeling, you probably still only capture it maybe 70-80% of the time in spell practice, and even less in full runs. However, the failures stick out to you even more now, because internally you feel like you've learned it and should be capping it 100% of the time. I feel like you would be less prone to tantrums if you can realign your expectations for improvement. At least I've found that helpful personally.

What's harder, Futari 1.01 ultra TLB Larsa or Inbachi? The latter was a bit disappointing, I mean, it looks hard on paper and I remember reading that "I hope it takes seven years to beat" statement from one of the devs, but it barely took one... in fact it was Larsa the one that took that long, but it seems much easier. I guess the difficult part is the rest of the game...

Hey guys, I took 2nd place at TouhouCon's PoFV's tournament.

Any PoFV experts here? I could use some critique (I'm on the left side):
http://www.twitch..
tv/touhoucon/b/570889838?t=124m25s

I could never get PoFV netplay working, so I don't have much PoFV experience. I just used my Touhou skills and experience and was surprised at how far I got.

>> No.12509508

>>12509276
To be blunt, it's a good thing for you that everyone else there also likely had no experience, and none of the entries seemed to play anything above Normal. The actual mechanics of PoFV was ignored throughout the tournament and everyone just focused on killing everything and dodging.

One thing is that you don't want to be holding shot. One of the primary parts of PoFV is chaining enemies: when you kill an enemy, the next in line takes damage, and chaining them like this gives extra spell points. You want to hit one enemy, chain the line, then hit another to get spell points up without dropping. Destroying enemies sends bullets to the opponent, and will cancel pellet bullets near the explosion, which are reflected back to the enemy.

At 100k, 300k, 500k spell points you send a boss attack to the other screen, as though you had used a Lv4. This is why in high-level play you'll never really see people charging to even Lv3. Boss attacks cancel out an existing boss attack, so you can get rid of the boss attacking you and counter with your own. After 500k nothing happens, so you then might want to stop shooting to drop the chain and restart getting spell points.

You use the scope to hit the blob spirits to convert them, and then you kill them to 1) fill charge gauge, 2) cancel nearby pellet bullets, and 3) send an EX attack to the other screen, like Marisa's verti-lasers or Medicine's poison. Additionally, when you use a charge attack over level 1, it cancels all bullets around you (not just pellets). If enemies are caught in the cancel wave they die, and those explosion can reflect bullets, though.

So the core play is basically that you actually want to get bullets all over the screen, then bounce these back and forth. If your opponents didn't know how to manipulate bullets like this, you would have probably destroyed them.

>> No.12509520

>>12509508
Ah, another reason you don't want to be holding shot all the time is because killing spirits without converting them will send them to the opponent, giving them ammo. But you do want to be firing enough to kill converted spirits and starting fairy chains.

Yeah, watching the final match, the main reason you lost was because the other player knew he was supposed to convert then kill spirits. He got more gauge from it, so he could cancel more bullets and fire more attacks. He also seemed a bit more wary that you're supposed to chain the fairies.

Reaching those spell point values fast isn't always the best thing to do; especially against intermediate-ish players, you probably want to look at their spell points, and try to reach the landmarks right after they do so that you can cancel their bosses.

Superplayers fill up their level 2 gauges quickly because the gauge fills more quickly as you get more spell points, i.e. by not breaking the chain. Lives are given for not dying. They're thrown at you only if you already don't really need them. Trying to not die and bombing instead uses up power, meaning you're in danger longer. Meanwhile the game is fairly memo-heavy and has a more difficult Normal than other games, so it isn't kind to new players to begin with. You know this.

I just tried the "Suwako-chan Cubic" demo with my Oculus Rift DK2, and it's pretty fun. It's a pretty obvious touhou knockoff, but with the addition that you can dodge under stuff (you still move in 2D space).

The weird color distortion in the screenshot is from Oculus' chromatic aberration correction, it doesn't appear like that in-game.

I don't really recommend getting a DK2 unless you are an early adopter, it really, really needs a higher resolution panel. Even at 1080p you can clearly make out individual pixels as the field of view is so wide. Hopefully the consumer version has a 4k screen.

Point blank for for Green Storm, it dies really fast if you do it like that.
Tiny little streaming movements for bury in lake, also remember that she shoots whilst moving which will make the last few bubble bullets different to avoid.

Majority of the good players on that forum either got banned or asked to have their scores removed.

Refer to the gensokyo.org uploader to see a different history.

PoFV scoring is very silly due to high amount of randomness, and that's the main reason the Japanese don't have a scoreboard for it.

Thats more of what I would expect.
And yeah, it is rather random, if the AI cooperates you can make matches last much longer than normal, and get a shitton of points, and then die, and get more.

You can really just look at any extra stage perfect to get a sense. For the first part, move around the 4 corners, then move slightly offset from the corners after one rotation. Then it's just pretty basic dodging. Try to dodge just one wave at a time.

It's not hard to do. You already have 66 cards total between Easy, Normal, and the Extra, plus Cirno and Letty's Hard cards, plus there are several really easy cards in the later hard stages that can be gotten through continue spam (ex. Alice's midboss card, her 2nd boss card, that streaming Primsriver one, etc). That should put you really really close to 60 at least.

I'm having some problems, /jp/... All of my touhou games from Ten Desires and earlier have stopped working randomly. They apparently load up fine and appear on the task manager, but they never actually come upon the screen in fullscreen mode. The only way to play them is with extremely tiny windowed mode.

What could be the problem? It's probably graphics related, but they were working until a few days ago. I am using intel 4600 integrated graphics, not dedicated.

I've been playing through the games chronologically, getting each normal 1cc clear and clearing the easier extras (EoSD, PCB, and glitched MoF so far). Now I'm trying to get SA 1cc normal clears the past week. Cleared with Marisa/Alice easily, but haven't been able to clear Marisa/Patchy despite getting to the last spellcard multiple times. Just had a run though that was going great. Got through stages 1-4 without dying, and despite doing poorly on stage 5 still had 5 lives going into stage 6. Immediately I start spilling spaghetti though, and end up dying on the last spellcard again with just a tiny bit of life left.

Sounds like that's your roadblock. Try clearing Stage 6 with continues so you can open up practice mode and learn how to not spaghetti.
