Ok gdrive is up for /jp/ BJD 2023 Calendar Project
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1abqGwCjvHI0DalA13tDVTwtgYyXPgG1UXJ98AcNCeQk/edit?usp=sharing
Anyone is welcome to participate despite photography skills. If there isn't much interest then as long as those participating are keen, then I don't mind trying to see it through. If the plan is to make it a printable file then I would say cut off would be around the end of November, if we are looking to make a printable calendar then deadline would need to be end of October or earlier. Hopefully this encourages some anons to get out their camera and give their dolls some extra care and love and have some fun.

Here is a very old blog talking about dd3 vs dds.
http://blog.livedoor.jp/teaoevo/archives/1728152.html
For me , I went with a dds because at the time, the store I adopted her from had the cuter selection of clothing for dds sizes.

They're basically identical sizes, DDS are a bit shorter and more slender. As for faceups, that's up to you- most people get their heads from Yahoo Japan Auctions or another artist, or they do their own faceups, if they're able.

DD and DDS girls are basically the same, but the DDS girls have slightly smaller measurements all the way around. While this doesn't seem like much, it makes a HUGE difference in clothes. All of my girls are DDS for this reason and I've never had anything not fit because it was too small. If it fits a DD, it'll fit a DDS, if it fits an SD, it'll fit a DDS, if it fits a Smart Doll it'll fit a DDS. That's not always true with a DD, as Smart Doll clothes often don't fit them since their trunks are shorter and shoulders smaller. The only caveat being that clothes will sometimes be a bit too big, but it's easily fixed with a safety pin or clothes pin to pin them back.
>>39593175
Glasses can be a bit of a pain as the face width is different from sculpt to sculpt and resin dolls have narrower faces than vinyls. So when you do order, order a bunch of different pairs as they're usually cheap but shipping isn't. Guys what are your thoughts on "Azone 45cm - Iris Petit line''? I mean I know they use Obitsu body and stuff but do you guys think it's worth it over say, MDD or it would be a complete clusterfuck to find clothes for that doll?

I've heard Obitsu bodies pose better and break less but that people end up using DD heads on them anyway with an adapter, why is that? Are Obitsu heads ugly or not many artists make faceups for them or what?. I've seen pics using the adapter and I think it can look a bit off sometimes like a bit bobble head so maybe it's not something many people do after all and I was making a big deal of it?

Maybe I should just focus on dollfie or at least not mix bodies and brands stuff idk. This one is cute though.

A fair amount of MDD clothes fit the 45cm line, assuming you mindful of the larger bust/hip sizes of the 45, and any for DDP will given they have the same sizes (despite being different scales). Plus they have their own 45 line, and will fit into 50 as well. AZO2 is generally a bit big on them. So its not very hard at all to find clothing for them.

Also, personal preferences aside, 45cm vs 50cm Azone (I think that's the AZO2 you mentioned), which one do you think it's less of a pain of the two in terms of clothes and stuff? >> No.39606302

>>39606168
I usually got Obitsu bodies because they pose better than older Volks bodies did, but Obitsu's 60cm bodies are discontinued, and the DDf3 body is pretty good, so it's a fair trade. Obitsu heads can be quite cute, in my subjective opinion- it's just that Dollfie Dream heads are /overwhelmingly/ more commonly customized.

>> No.39606312

>>39606206
Quick brand run down, slight bias, take with a grain of salt.
Volks: Prestige brand. The Dollfie Dream line of dolls is relatively new to the rest of the brand as they've been making resin much longer. Modular, customizeable and offers everything to build from scratch (option parts and full blank bodies and heads) to full set licensed dolls
Smartdoll: Only sells complete dolls, essentially the Apple Macintosh of Vinyl BJD. While they can be taken apart, spare parts aren't readily available and usually require contact with their customer service, and while they will do so free (as long as you bought the doll through them and aren't banned by Danny) they'll ask you buy something else to justify shipping (clothes). There's also a massive Cult of Personality around Danny Choo the creator/owner of the company. People have been banned from the store and have orders cancelled for asking questions or talking about customizing them in Facebook groups.
Obitsu: Cheaper bodies and parts, but doesn't offer complete dolls in any way. You will have to buy via third party as the official site doesn't ship internationally. Plenty of third party sites use their bodies to make custom order dolls (Azone, parabox)
Azone: Essentially a third party taking Obitsu dolls and making licensed or original characters for them. If you only want a doll because it's your anime waifu, this is an affordable brand and a fine place to start. Clothes are few and far between with official Azone clothes being the only sure bet to find things. They cater to very casual doll hobbyists.
Parabox: Obitsu bodies and custom orders. If you want something smaller than 1/4, they're your shop.

Thanks a ton anon!. I'm trying to understand everything lol I remember reading a while ago about some drama involving Smart Doll or something and that it was a "one man company" or something akin, I understand a little bit more now.

So Azone is the one that only makes "full sets" using the Obitsu bodies then and ton of Anime collaborations, and Parabox the customization side of Obitsu where you can order your own parts for a similar Volks customization experience (and I think there are some full sets with original characters too).
I'm definitely getting a MDD but will keep an eye on both of these companies as well as they have a ton of cute things too. Down the road I'm gonna make my own doll101 guide for retards like me...

Different anon, an azone is a good place to start to test out how much dolls are for you or to get used to some easier maintenance. They are cute and cheaper and you can buy so extra clothes and bits to get used to swapping some parts etc. My first doll was azone Spice and Wolf holo but then I bought a few original ones that I could actually feel ok with playing around with and I knew then it was a rabbit hole.

Angel Philia is another smaller company that makes full sets with the Obitsu 50cm bodies but most of their sculpts are on the more sexually exaggerated side with big thighs and butts, air brushed nipples, and a lot of their heads are making an ahegao face. They also sell the body parts separately.
A lot of their stuff isn't to everyone's taste but if you mix and match you can get some more normal results. My first doll was an Obitsu body and Parabox head but I eventually replaced her chest, torso and thighs with some of their parts and she's about the same size as the largest bust Azone model so their AZO2 cloths fit her pretty well. Pic here is her wearing AZO2 stuff.

I'll also second Azone. The last doll I bought was one of their 45cm Iris Collect Petit dolls and I like her a lot.

Having anime dolls is fun. Artist friends will complain they can't find a reference for something and I can say "give me 20 minutes" and try to produce it for them. The downside is that posing can be limited... I'd pay whatever volks wanted if they started selling double-jointed dolls, at least in the arms or the hip/thigh area. so many factors here anon.
how good are you at being able to stash money away without touching it for the end goal?
what doll are you really wanting in the end?
have you searched the various doll forum sites and zuccpage for dolls looking for a new home for fair prices?

>how good are you at being able to stash money away without touching it for the end goal?
I've saved up for my $3k (now $6k if you look at current prices) computer, so I think I can handle saving.
>what doll are you really wanting in the end?
Just a regular ol' Dolfie Dream doll with an S bust.
>have you searched the various doll forum sites and zuccpage for dolls looking for a new home for fair prices?
Nope, don't know where to find those forums, and I don't use zuccbook.
>what is a realistic budget for you?
The budget doesn't really matter, however due to current circumstances I can only pay for parts at a time. I don't even know where to find someone who does faceups without jacking up the prices because muh popularity.

Etsy and Instagram. On Etsy; ShiNes and NiyaMia. They both do good work and are relatively fairly priced as it includes the price of the head. Don't get fucked up about them providing the heads since they're in China. They only use legit heads and are well known in most hobby circles for doing good work.
(All three of my girls are from those two artists, and I couldn't be happier)
On Instagram, check the tag #faceupcommission and look around for artists. This is more of a pain because you have to wait for open slots and try to get one and usually supply your own head and send it to them.
DollDreaming has a marketplace as well that will have people rehoming dolls for fair prices, but you have to have an account and there's a post limit before they let you use it.

check mandarake as well as other anons dolldreaming marketplace suggestion while you're looking. i would suggest getting a body and head seperate instead of just individual pieces as you can save money that way.
if the money isn't an issue and you have some patience, you could get a whole girl from someone if they are looking to just offload. 3k would pretty much obtain any girl you could want if you wanted one of the limited release girls as well.
the s bust shouldn't be too hard to find. if anything, you could pick up a normal or L bust dollfie body and i'm sure you could find an s bust cheaply.

purples help cancel out yellows, so if you get some purple or blue filters for your light sources in your room you should be able to balance the white. This is just a 45% opacity overlay layer @ 125,124,190. You can do it selectively to make fake shadows or blend with other light sources better if you're doing composites.

I hope I'm not overstepping here, because they're cute pictures. I'm also sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

The other bowl shaped ones I made myself using wooden pinch pots I got at a yard sale and pulled the tops off of some fake flowers also from Michaels, they're held in with some putty I had around. You can find wood pinch pots on Amazon if you wanted to try and make it yourself.

are there good custom wig makers for mdd? How expensive? could the heart be done on the hair like that?

>> No.39720540

>>39720463
Wigs are measured in inches for the circumference of the head they fit. DD and MDD are 8.5 to 9 inch in size. So a wig of that size will fit either. There are a lot of custom wig makers, and they'll be able to make that gradient but the heart is probably a no, but you could stencil one on. Check with ZaZouCustomDolls on Etsy or DallasDollCO. They both make good wigs and take custom orders.

>> No.39720637

>>39720540
thanks anon. It isn't expensive as I thought it would be, like a hundred or something. that's good.
Now that you're here though, do you happen to know a good eye brand/model or something that would look like the one she has? I know some people make custom eyes too. I wonder if the little heart inside can be done but that's prob very tricky too so I wouldn't mind it that much. I def want the one on the wig.

>> No.39720856

Those are primarily Smart Doll wigmakers right? How's the fit on DD? I know they'd be around the same size but Smart Dolls seem to be particularly sizable in the forehead so I wonder if the wigs would sit a bit awkwardly on DD.

>> No.39728184

>>39725990
Smart Doll wigs are said to be 8.5 inches, but they're elastic caps so the .5 inch difference doesn't mean much. If you look at my dolls in >>39656516 both of those wigs are "Smart Doll" wigs on DDH09s. The longer one (on the right) I bought directly from Culture Japan when they used to still sell wigs separate. The shorter one (on the left) is from DallasDollCo. imo even the regular APs can be cute, depending on how they're styled
@sdsharlotte (twitter) makes a stock(ish) type K head look really cute just by putting on a wig with bangs that go all the way down to her eyes, turning an ahegao into a playful face
he still dresses & poses her all sexy but hey
I've also seen some Js and Hs with custom faceup that could be cute depending on the choice of wig
then again my definition of cute may just be different

There are tons of heads there that were released as a full set from a character , but can you actually get only the head and customize it yourself or you're limited to the nameless heads only (DDH-08 etc)? what are your thoughts about this doll and azone dolls in general? are they good for a first (and maybe only) buy or is it better to go for the custom obitsu ones? looking for 1/6 recs if possible

>> No.39796186

i don't have any dolls, but looking at them always feels nice. i don't really know how to describe it other than >>39583894
>they are like a feather blanket gently wrapping around my soul
where would i go irl to see people's dolls? do you all ever take them to conventions or similar places? i kind of want to make doll friends, since i probably couldn't ever bring myself to get any of my own, but i really like the pictures and think it would be fun to see them and talk about them

>> No.39798656

>>39795632
It really depends what you are after/what your priorities are, anon? I own both 1/6 Azone dolls and some Obitsu bodies. imo Obitsu bodies pose better but Azones look slightly cuter in their shape and posing. Azones are solid plastic though so they have a nice, slightly weighty feel to them, whereas Obitsu are partially hollow with a frame. Azone dolls also have a massive variety of clothes made to fit them - of course, many of these fit Obitsu too, but not all. Azone dolls also have loads of different hair colours available. I do actually really like the girl you've mentioned - her outfit is adorable and the red eyes are a nice touch.

there's dollparty in Japan and Volks makes one in US I think. Just get a doll anon

Depends on what you want really. Azone 1/6 I think are mostly pure neemos and the kind of dolls where you can't remove the wig nor the eyes because they're painted on so it's not for much customization. If you find a character you like a lot then maybe it could be a good idea, otherwise I would get an Obitsu from Parabox. Both Azone and Parabox are brands that uses Obitsu bodies so it's not like it's really that different

I know you said 1/6 but honestly if I was just getting one and only one doll forever I would save and go for top brand Volks 1/3 MDD and even save for giving her a custom faceup. More clothes available etc etc

thanks for the suggestions, i think my priority would be having a cute doll to make her a lot of clothes, which i have to learn first how to make them, so the customization aspect isn't a problem. i would consider a 1/3 for a second doll if everything goes well with my first one.
does any anon have experience making clothes for different sizes of dolls or making clothes in general? is it easier for a bigger or smaller doll? i would like to learn more before making the big decision
also, another cutie for the thread

They also have "Tawny" (the color Anthy's being released in,) whatever the hell DDdy Kanu is, and Mint, Petal (pink,) and Lilac through Dollfie Dream Idols -- they're all basically one-off colors, but perhaps worth mentioning whenever someone sees the hand packs for sale.

I did try for a bit, but I'm pretty bad at editing and couldn't get it to look right.
I think the problem I was having was that this specific book was pretty blurry in a way that would really only make sense for a bright object, so my attempts just made it look weird and out of place.

you can only get a 1/3 sized male doll via dream choice, if you're after 1/4 there are 3rd party male torso's you can swap out of a normal MDD body.

It might be a good idea to have a section about 3rd party add-on's for volks bodies: like the Asanachi frame for more posability, peach pai for silicone busts, and kakuso torso's for male MDD's.

>> No.39812471

>Asanachi frame for more posability
I don't know about that one nor I can't find much info about it. I wrote that there 3rd party mods and talked about the Peach Pai ones mostly. When it comes to male torso I made a search and what most people seem to do is use an Obitsu body + MDD head, did you mean that? I've read about others choosing the smallest bust size because it doesn't make a difference with clothes on so I've written down both alternatives, were you referring to that or other stuff?

I misspelled, its asachanchi frame. He makes them for DD and MDD, III as well as F3. They have their own site, drops are random and it can be costly for a whole frame, around $300? Their twitter:

probably nothing doll-related, I've been meaning to get a sewing machine for years before I got into dolls
it does embroidery too, so some custom designs for like gifts & stuff
for doll stuff, first will be fixing pic related skirt which popped a seam yesterday and I can't hand-sew worth a damn
eventually some simple stuff, like socks
and lol I wasn't really trying to save money, meant to say I bought it MSRP
