I've been taking beginning course in the Uni for a year so far so I have the basic grammar structures down ok, it's the kanji and vocab that worries me more but so far I'm getting by all right, just making sure to write down notes in the margins :)

After the year (equivalent to 60 hours of lessons) we aren't even close to N5, pretty much just finished both kanas and as I said some pretty basic grammar structures. I've been learning a bit on the side but not too much, I'm just going to see how far I'll be able to take it.

My name is Sophie. I just arrived in Japan 3 days ago. I've spent the last 2 years at the university studying the language, however, it appears to me that the JLPT and the very formal Japanese I was trained to use just didn't prepare me for this. How many words do you learn? Is it okay to learn 50 words a day as I do? I spend about an hour in a day for anki. 10-20-30 is just too small amount. It doesn't make me feel progress. It's also hard to read something at my level without looking up words so I want to learn basics as fast as I can. Although I can read many things I couldn't before. I have a great motivation.

This is word-for-word my experience now trying to get my listening comprehension up from N2 level to N1 level. A month ago I decided to just purely watch/listen to stuff every day for 6-8 hours, and I feel like I haven't even hit the level of development in vocabulary/grammar/syntax that I get from a single day of reading (for the exact reason laid out there)

Okay so.. I took the N4 this month, and I felt it went smoothly and am quite confident I passed. I rigorously studied and finished Genki II on the days leading up the the test so I felt kinda burned out. Took a break, and I have not done any active studying in the past 3 weeks.
