I bruteforced it to some extent, I've never really used subs for Precure or Sentai or Rider weeklies because they're such a pain to re-time, and some seasonal that never really released with subs concurrently. It was and still is very frustrating because my reading is far better than my listening, for instance this season's Ragna Crimson. The manga I can read really easily, but the same scenes with the same dialogue filters me hard, and JPN subs are slow so I just watch it raw. Other shows this season like SHY or Kamierabi are very easy entirely raw though.

I don't really divide it between listening and reading. I'd say I read more by virtue of games, VNs, LNs and manga, but I watch about 15 seasonal anime and JPN youtube. So I just sorta do what I want, though since I was previously watching most anime with JPN subs, I personally counted that as reading so now my listening and reading is closer to being even but I still read more.

Don't take too much advice from me, I'm okay at listening but I'm still awful, and I've only made this adjustment like a week or two ago.
What I do now is
>If it's a youtube video or live stream, I just watch, if I whitenoise something I whitenoise it.
>If it's an anime with JPN subs, I have the anime playing on one monitor with the subs playing but invisible, and on my other monitor is my texthooker page with the words. I might change this because I find myself looking over too often out of habit.
>If it's an anime entirely raw, I'll go back when the episode is done and try a few more times, if I truly can't understand it I'll go to a streaming site and watch it with ENG subs and piece it together. Or if it has a manga easily accesible raw, I'll check that first if they just used the same lines.

If I were to offer any advice, I'd say wait until you're comfortable watching anime with subs, I'd say its okay that you still need 1 or 2 look ups an episode depending, but if you find yourself looking something up every 3 minutes it's probably not the best idea just yet.

The logic of making your own deck is that it presents you words that you're currently running into in your immersion, ie, if you really enjoy cop dramas, you'll run into words like 鑑識 and mine those, whereas that word probably isn't in core2k. This will give you a big boost in comprehension in terms of vocabulary, making grammar study easy. It's much easier to understand a sentence that has 1 unknown piece of vocabulary, than it is if it was 1 piece of unknown grammar. Most people use a basic vocab deck, like core2k or some Tango deck to get themselves a base level of vocab, and then shift over to self made decks. Self made decks are not only really easy to make and mine for, and beyond the previous point give a lot of customization. You can use any dictionary, go entirely monolingual, have pitch accent built in, etc. Use a premade deck until you run into a lot of n+1 sentences (sentences you understand except for one word), and then its pretty safe to start mining.

I have become disgusted with my messy vocab cards that have a million dictionary entries and have become determined to turn them all into simple cards with a single definition each. In doing this I also decided to make as many of them monolingual as I can (as many as have monolingual definitions I can read/understand). How much am I screwing myself/wasting my time with unnecessary relapses? I have 2500 mined cards.

Monolingual definitions are probably the dumbest thing to card. The point of flash cards is to help you recall the concept as quick as possible, and the easiest way to test yourself on them is with English definitions. Having more verbose Japanese definitions is pointless.

Started learning just over two weeks ago. Got all the kana memorised in two days, been working on my Anki 2k/6k deck and most commonly used kanji decks since then.
Some days I feel like I can remember vocab just fine, and other days it feels like I can't remember it all. I've tried to read some yotsubato, a childrens book called 'tadaima", pokemon red and some j-dramas using migaku but reading content has been difficult because i'm finding I need to look up literally every single word still most of the time, and grammar is still a pain point.

I'll check out the guide OP posted. I'm going to learn this shit. Youtubers make it sound like "oh just start doing 'immersion' right away' without talking about the fact they've been doing linear studying for 3 months before they even started watching anything.
Its frustrating because it makes me feel like i'm not where I should be, but I just need to keep pushing though.

I'm like you, only a couple months ahead of you. Started with core 2k/6k and been grinding that. I'm at around 1400 cards seen, and just compared with the core 2.3k deck that's supposed to be optimized for getting you running with the words that'll actually show up in your VNs and Annie Mayes and whatnot. Words for things like super-express train and political parties and stuff show up in newspapers, but I get the feeling they won't necessarily be as immediately important to know when starting immersion unless you dive into that kind of content... So I kinda regret not just starting with 2.3k; just figured I'd relate my story to you.

For my part, I went through and suspended all the cards in core 2k/6k that don't appear in core 2.3k, and will probably continue doing a mix of mined cards while I continue finishing off what's left of the core deck, which will be another couple months, I guess. I know the effort wasn't wasted, since these are ultimately all still common cards, but it's annoying thinking immersion could be just a little less painful now if I had started with that deck. But since I too am a beginner, I guess I don't really know how much of a difference it'd make. And surely there's going to be basically no difference a year from now.

I'm very aware i'll have to still regularly look up words when I hit that stage - but right now it's a somewhat demoralising activity when I can comprehend maybe 1 in every 30 words, if that.

Overall, i'm trying to not get too demoralised. I realised from the beginning that this was going to be a long, difficult, multiyear endeavour- with life long learning if I want to maintain it, but even the simplest guides out there seem to want you to jump straight into reading and watching things before a foundation is even built.

Not him, but after finishing Core 2k, it took me like 3 volumes of Yotsuba to begin to get a foothold on reading. It happens really really fast. Then, i started reading an easy VN, and after finishing that, my skills got 100x better. (3 months of reading)

Im near the end of my 2nd VN, and i can already comprehend nearly 80-90% of everything i listen to on youtube. The speed at which you can learn this language is really fast. The most dramatic progress happens at the beginning, and after this, its just coasting and reading more to build your vocabulary

It's still very very much impossible for me to "comfortably" read anything harder than something like an N5 graded reader. Tons of grammar stuff I don't know, tons of words I don't know, etc. I can figure things out fumbling with hover dictionary, but it's absolutely still not comfortable, and I don't expect it to get comfortable anytime soon either. But I'm just a couple months in, so it's whatever. YMMV.

Thanks, I appreciate your insights. For now i'll keep plugging away at the core anki deck and read a chapter of my genki textbook here and there, and try to keep in mind that it's a laborious process that's going to take awhile.

Out of curiosity, how many new words did you do a day on anki? I've got mine set to 5 currently, but feel like maybe I should be doing more. But as it is, i'm on 5 a day with about 30ish daily revisions, sometimes more. If i'm reading my stats right, I think i've seen/currently at about 106 words.

Would you recommend 50 even if it sometimes takes me 4-5 'again' attempts to correctly pronounce words I've seen regularly? The reading side isn't too hard, for the most part by sight I can tell what a word is based on the Kanji I already know, and/or the shape of the word, it's just remembering how it's said in Japanese that's often the difficult part.
