I need to replay Clannad.
It was the very first VN I played in Japanese 15 years ago as a beginner and my reading speed was so painfully slow that it took many months to get through it and probably missed a lot of the subtleties. And I never even played Nagisa's afterstory, stopped after the normal routes.
I'm sure it would be a completely different experience now.
I'll also need to play Tomoyo After, she was my favorite girl.

I know that MTL is a controversial subject and it's memed a lot, but how good/bad it actually is?
For example, if I really liked a VN with no translation (for reasons other than good writing or detailed story) and wanted an EOP friend to experience it, would reading an MTL be better than nothing for him, or is MTL so miserable that it's going to completely ruin the work and he's better not read it at all?
I've never used MTL and I'm not an expert on this subject, but I have seen some comparisons of official translations with MTL, and MTL seemed to be more accurate. It may possibly only be worse than official translations as in having less consistency (eg. wrong name readings, etc), but if a person knows just the basics of Japanese, they may detect the majority of them.

I personally wouldn't like the idea of disabling my internet because I want to seed torrents as much as possible. I currently have ~450 torrents seeding, with ~150 of them being VNs. In a little over a year, I have uploaded almost 50 TB (13+ overall ratio).
I put my computer on sleep mode before going to bed so that the fan noise doesn't bother me, but I have it set to turn on again in around an hour to not waste time not seeding.

I just finished making a table with all the VNs that I have saved on my drives, including name, VNDB link, languages*, 18+ status, and additional notes. Looks like I have almost 230 entries, though worth noting that plenty are just small fandiscs or "literally what" doujinge shared on this general or whatever.
I'm doing this for preservation purposes, basically for the case that the VNs disappear from the internet or the internet itself goes down/becomes ultra-authoritarian.
*I also value having languages other than Japanese for preservation purposes too, because everyone deserves to see the at least a portion of the beauty of VNs even if they aren't interested in learning Japanese

Also forgot to mention, something that I also record on the table, and possibly what motivated me to make one in the first place, is what games I have confirmed to work (at least in Japanese) and what games are not confirmed to work. Ideally I would test all games even if I'm not planning on actually playing them any time soon, and try to make them work. Imagine how frustrating it would be to want to play an eroge in a post-internet world and then realize that you haven't downloaded a crack for it or something.

I read this years ago and yea it was a disappointment. Lots of ass pulls and one of the route was nonsensical. 4 routes that leads to true end that lasts 5 minutes (similar to Aokana true end funnily enough) . They just ran out of gas in the end I suppose.

I think VNs, even episodic, wouldn't be able to release like LNs. You need to prepare a lot in advance. Hardest part will be releasing 1st "volume" cause most VNs feature most of characters in the beginning of the story, same with locations and OST. So you'll need most of content(tachie, bgs, soundtracks) done just for beginning.

It depends on how text focused the VN is, but generally it's going to be pretty bad.
If it's something that has a very heavy focus on gameplay, you could probably MTL it and have an enjoyable experience. (E.G. Dungeons & Dolls, Waidonyo, Mahjong Connect, anything by Illusion)
If the writing is meaningful it's going to be gruesome. The more lovely a work of literature is, the worse MTL will mangle it.

MTLing is not significantly easier than learning Japanese.
Studying is more difficult up front, but only gets easier and easier as you go on. MTL is always a slog, no matter how much time you spend doing it. If you don't read very slowly, carefully, and awkwardly, you won't catch its mistakes.
MTL fucks up constantly. Even a completely raw beginner will make less major mistakes. It especially struggles with positive/negative; it can't tell the difference between "We should go to the beach" and "We shouldn't go to the beach". Sarcasm is a complete non-starter. Metaphors are hopeless.

In time, these problems may be fixed. But much of the challenge of reading Japanese comes not from the language itself, but understanding the cultural context the text was written in.
I'm sure that some MTL exists that can correctly translate 「おうちをきいてもわからない　なまえをきいてもわからない」, but there are none which will tell you that they are lines from いぬのおまわりさん, which is what's actually crucial to know to understand that text.

MTL may well be better than official translations, but that's like saying mud is more nutritious than cement. Both are terrible options only the desperate would consider.

How is the VN reading experience for blind people? You probably have to use a texthooker in conjunction with a TTS (for unvoiced lines) and/or one of those expensive braille displays. finished 昴の騎士.
i'll try to keep the gushing to an appreciable level but man what a great time that was. there's a certain pleasure in following a specific writer through their works and seeing them get (ideally) better at their craft, and it feels like here is where it really clicked for him. the character interactions and plot beats and even gameplay elements and art were all a big step up from the previous game. you could also totally see where he caught the sci-fi bug that mahou shoujo ran with. still fairly held back by the piece of shit engine it runs on but the addition of CGs and skill cut-ins made it so you didn't have to run on 90% imagination like the last couple.

plot was solid, a good excuse to go on an adventure that balloons out into fate of the world shenanigans. classic jrpg feel, no complaints here. though i'm once again really curious where the dev is getting all this gratuitous italian.

i fucking adored the cast, even when it got to the inevitable endgame bloat. fantastic banter with everyone finding a good niche to fill out and at least a couple banter buddies. tons of callbacks and running jokes and brick jokes and all that stuff that i love. i will miss these little shits but the long-ass epilogue covered pretty much everything i wanted to. Sirius was a fairly bland shounen MC but his "fuck it, i'll make it work" attitude was endearing enough and his interactions with Tiera sold the romance well. sorry Spica-tan, you never had a chance. but the fact that the game and mos of the characters clearly considered him to be in the running as a heroine will never stop being funny to me
was also really surprised by the hidden/secret characters, not only did they give them a ton of regular interactions with the cast, the returning characters from OtoZ had a whole plot line going that tied up a major loose end from that game. granted the conditions weren't hard to clear but you'd miss out on a lot if you didn't recruit them.

obligatory gripes: difficulty kinda fell off for a while towards the end, even the last map was less brutal than usual. some of the late joining characters were kinda lame and didn't add much. i expected more relevance out of Betelgeuse since he was on the start screen and all. i'm getting sick of what i assume is default srpg studio 95 music because it's been the same shit for three games now. how the hell does everyone in what appears to be mostly a podunk pre-industrialized civilization know all this modern science/cosmology stuff.

tl;dr it's great, i had a lot of fun with it.
i guess i'm a sucker for the way this guy does characters. there's not usually a huge amount of depth or development to them but they're hard carried by how they play off each other.

i should give this shit a rest for a while but 闇鍋企画 is apparently a big fandisk melting pot (a yaminabe, even) so i feel i ought to play it while i still remember who everyone is

I mean it started out interesting with all the "situational" skills Judar has.
I was excited when you eventually get to recruit more girls into party. But so far the combat flow has turned into
