So, white.
I was recently told in my Eleven culture class that the whole "white=death & mourning in Japan" thing is just a myth. Not quite convinced, I tried to look up sources that confirm it and guess what? I found nothing. Sure, there's the whole "white face of death" thing, but that's the same for us westerners.
So, wtf - why does everyone keep believing this stupid story? I mean, for fuck's sake, miko wear white clothes. Miko are shinto priests and shinto is the one religion in the world that simply abhors anything related to death - would they really make their pretty girls wear white clothes if white were the color of death?

Actually, traditionally in both Chinese and Japanese culture, white IS the color symbolizing death and/or purity. Now, both cultures adopted Western traditions and it's modern wear black instead.

Actually, white traditionally symbolizes death, and in some cases, purity in both Japanese and Chinese culture. It's just that now, it's considered more modern and common to wear black instead because they had adopted this tradition from Western influences. Not a myth, just old.
