Not too bad. Most of its contained. The guys at TEPCO have gotten a real talking to, but they are too big to just kill. Most of Tokyo relies on them. I am closer to the area than Tokyo (around 100 km), but there isn't any fear or anything.

Conversational level. I can survive easy, and I can mostly talk about whatever I want. I do have problems when things get technical or really complicated, like mechanics or politics. But I can pretty much hold my own in most places. Actually, the Japanese get rather surprised with that. Most expect that you won't know any.
And 4 + 1 years in high school (summer class to skip a grade) and 4 years in college ( major was Japanese and Japanese Culture)

Two bizarre things. I found horse sashimi at a restaurant, and was approached by an old man who took lessons at my school fifteen years ago and asked if I knew the teacher ( I was like 9 then). Mostly, people think I am older than I really am, and always ask if I am American or something else (exact wording).
Also, since the country is so small, a lot of the places have the same (or close) weather. I had someone say that they knew someone in American, and that it was raining there. So that person thought that it was raining in ALL of the US.
