Hi, what are the best first VNs for a newbie like me?

>> No.8016765

That's rare, usually /a/ and /v/ take care of the entry-level stuff now of days.

Uhh shit, YMK, Ever 17, and stuff by Type-Moon or Akabesoft are good jumping points.

>Hi, what are the best first VNs for a newbie like me?

Fate Stay Night is the easiest choice.
It's shounen shit so most likely you'll enjoy it no matter what, art is fine (unlike old Tsukihime with paint-keuchi), plot is pretty retarded and characters are fucking stupid but surprisingly you'll find them attractive, gar, etc.

If you emo-hipster than stick with Saya no Uta - perfect choice for babby's-first-misanthropy horror. Also it's pretty short so you'll not drop it because of silly graphomania / cooking scenes and any unnecessary moral-faggotry.

I'll never understand people who recommend FSN for a first VN.
Not only is it FUCKING LONG but the pacing is pretty bad and you have to wait a long time for it to become interesting.
The only newbies who could enjoy it as a first are those who are already really into Type-Moon due to the powerlevel threads/anime.

I'd suggest to start with True Remembrance and Narcissu. They' re free so it will be easy to find links.

>> No.8016833

In my opinion, Planetarian is the best answer. It's the VN equivalent of a short-story, it's pretty simple, it's free of the godawful forced sex scenes, and it still tugs at your heart strings

My own first VN was Saya no Uta, to be honest, but I still think that Planetarian would be an easy one for me to recommend for someone new to the medium

>> No.8016834

>>8016827

nice list, are all the game "family friendly". A little erotic stuff is okay (like in a western film) but no tentacle hardcore stuff for example.

Ahh, I found Narcissu as free game, it is a good VN for the beginning?

Of the ones listed under "good for beginners," I know Tsukihime and Yume have sex scenes. Tsukihime sex scenes are particularly awful. This may not mean much to you if you're new around here, but read the imagine and you may begin to understand what I mean

Planetarian and obviously Phoenix Wright are family friendly. I haven't read True Remembrance or Narcissu so I couldn't comment on those

The problem is that most of the time it just ends up being stupid and breaking the narrative for no reason other than to give the audience something to fap to. Tsukihime was fucking NOTORIOUS for this

Fucking Ciel route. I HAVE TO SUCK THE EVIL OUT OF YOUR DICK, SHIKI, IT CAN'T BE HELPED

Now Saya no Uta, on the other hand, made use of them to emphasize the bond between Saya and Fuminori, and later to emphasize just how fucked up they both were. That was cool. Maybe it's more risque than most people would be comfortable with, but there was still a reason more significant than OUR AUDIENCE NEEDS TO MASTURBATE, QUICK SHOE-HORN IN A SEX SCENE

NO NO NO NO.

When you recommend entry level games, you recommend DOS age games, not Windows ones.

Get Dosbox and a Win98 emulator and play all the classics. it will give you perspective on how this genre has changed over time.

Avoid Ring Out though.

999 is a good entry level game. Not too long, officially translated (and pretty well for the most part), has puzzle gameplay elements. Really good. Or maybe Kana Little Sister.

I don't like the idea of recommending Clannad for beginners. It's long as fuck, requires a completion of every route that is just straight up hard if you're new to the genre, and the setting is very generic so it lacks the immediate interest that would help appeal to someone who hasn't played VNs before. Half of this applies to a lot of other great VNs too.
