Head mold refers to the shape/sculpt of the head, basically. For example, Aoi is http://www.volksusa.com/ddoh0004.html that one.

If you're looking for short wigs, Volks is actually not a bad option. I've had no end of trouble with some of their longer wigs getting tangled on me, though!

Also check out http://sqlabdolls.com/ for more head options. They come unpainted, but you can pay someone else to paint it for you and it still comes out cheaper than getting a limited edition doll.

Just one thing! A version II Aoi is coming out in not too long with the updated DDIII body. It has improved poseability, but some feel that the attractiveness of the joints have gone down. She also has a softer expression, but there are fans of the original Aoi's tsuntsun. Whether you choose to get her now or wait for v2, she's a fun doll.

Yes, version two is the one you linked. If you want one that's painted and always available, you basically have to choose Aoi or Yukino. You can order optional bust parts to get a smaller bust. Yukino comes with a medium bust, Aoi with a large.

I think you should aim for the one you want most instead of diving in with what's easy to get.

Taking up this hobby is like asking for your wallet to be periodically subject to a black hole sucking out your money. The cost hike from buying an aftermarket Akira is quite a bit more than just buying Aoi but think about all the clothes and accessories you would inevitably buy anyway. I say this because you don't want to regret getting Aoi later down the line and then buy an Akira after.

On the topic of limited DDs it's all about timing. The lottery for Volks isn't too hard to win. I entered and got Akira. Some are web order like the Sabers. Of course your best bet is to get it straight from Volks but sometimes you have to look to grey market.

Every tool has it's range and purpose, with a better lens and some strobist gear I'm sure it could do close to what I can with my Canons but I didn't get the PEN for otakuism

The real reason I got the PEN was for portability and discretion, It's much more discreet at bars and won't be denied at the door at concerts for "looking too 'pro' to not have a pass." Not to mention when you go on vacation it beats packing an additional 5+ pounds of SLR gear.

their certainly not standerd BJD's or Super Dolfies, Their joints arent making me think of how SD's work (granted I mostly own Luts not Volks) and from most of the dolls I'm seeing their eyes are painted on and not replaceable like your typical Dolfie. Not to mention when I see one with a bent limb it's got a plastic part in the ball and theres no sign of any elastic.
