How well do VNs and various shmups run in WINE?

I'm tempted to give up the Windows.

Not sure how well it has VNs covered.

Touhou doesn't run for me in Wine, but most VNs play perfectly well. Fate/Stay Night crashed for me a few times, though, so now I just play them in VirtualBox. That's also the easiest way.

>> No.8135235

I'm also able to play Touhou in windowed mode. Going fullscreen pretty much logs me out. I've been told that getting fullscreen to work involves something with starting another X screen for it, but I haven't tinkered with Linux enough to figure that out.

xinit -- :0 `wine 2hoos.exe`

Or something like that.

Whaaat? Touhou runs flawlessly in wine.

I have a crappy computer, so it's probably just me.

Which distro are you thinking of using? If you're new to *NIX, I recommend starting with Debian. There's a lot of packages available for it as well as a ton of support for it online. Don't install a *buntu or Mint; they're the same thing but with more crap.

And you can always dualboot. When you want to play video games or whatever, boot into Windows.

Recommending somebody who is new to *NIX debian? I would recommend something as opensuse then. The textbased setup can give a newbie quite a hard time.

My first distro was Mandrake Linux 8.1, and after that Debian.

>> No.8135278

>>8135275
I was tempted to try Mandrake when I found a CD of it in a closet, but figured that Debian/Ubuntu was enough for the time being.

OpenSuse is the worst distro I have ever used and I've been using Linux since 2006. I'd recommend Linux Mint, it's the best distro for beginners.

I'm not new to it, I'm just not sure how well they run in WINE. That's all.

However it was nice of you guys to be so considerate as to suggest some distros.

Why do you need full screen when you have eZoom + zoom current window? There's simply no reason to prefer fullscreen. eZoom is much better.

>>8135254
Not all touhous. Latest(th10+) run awfully

I've never tried Mandrake or Opensuse, how are those? My first was Debian a long time ago. I got bored of it and tried out Arch, Gentoo, Fedora and Xubuntu before I found Slackware and fell in love with it.

I remember. It's Linspire now.

(I tried it and it was crap by the way. Way too much garbage and trying to be 'user friendly'.)

All touhou games run flawless in wine (in my opinion even better than in windows). Hisoutensoku will only run if you have an ATI card and use catalyst drivers.
For visual novels I recommend a virtual machine, for example VirtualBox+WindowsXP or something like that.

>> No.8135368

There's actually a winelocale, sort of AppLocale for Wine, search for, but it only runs properly in Debian and Ubuntu. Most VNs play fine with it.

Don't know about VNs. For Touhou games, read http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Running_in_Linux_and_MacOS_X/Misc_fixes and http://hisouten.koumakan.jp/wiki/Linux_support for more. Basically you can expect:

PC-98s: I wish there was a native emulator. But at least the Windows ones can run in Wine.
TH06: Might run as fast as it can unless windowed, or run with v-sync. Fine otherwise.
TH07: Fine.
TH08: Fine.
TH09: Apparently needs native DLL? Was flaky last I checked, probably won't work well.
TH10 to TH12: Text rendering issues. Older Wine versions require d3dx9_36.dll. Fine otherwise.
TH125 and higher: Needs d3dx9_36.dll for certain graphical effects, I think. Fine otherwise.

IaMP: Configuration program doesn't work, game works fine.
MegaMari: I think this works fine now. Older versions need d3dx9_36.dll
NSML: NVIDIA card + NVIDIA proprietary driver dies at startup due to driver bug. Fine otherwise.
SWR: Same bug as NSML. A few graphical issues.
Hisoutensoku: Same bug as NSML. A few graphical issues and freezes, not satisafactory.
PatchCon: Same bug as NSML, no graphics otherwise so cannot be played anyway.

Also has anyone managed to run Touhouvania 2? That doesn't work for me at all.

Uhhhh, why?

I'll probably have the locale set for JP all the time anyways.

Figured at least some of you guys should be able to fix my problem, so here goes.

I installed Ubuntu with Dvorak keyboard layout, and while Xfce allows me to choose between Qwerty and Dvorak, this setting doesn't seem to affect Touhou (and there doesn't seem to be a way to remap the keys, short of using something like AHK). Any ideas?

Try autohotkey for Windows. Or get a game controller; it's a lot more comfortable, and you won't have to worry about the keyboard stuff.
