Is it good? I don't really like it. The writing is not so good and the premise itself is kind of lame. The art has a lot that is poorly drawn. A lot of badly drawn hands and feet. It still has a nice style sometimes.

i'm just getting over it now, only did lilly's route, got good end a couple days ago.

afterward all i did was go for long walks, drink lots of beer, and read KS threads on the internet. couldn't pull myself together to do anything productive. i had that shitty feeling in my heart / stomach for 2 days straight and finally this morning it let up and now i feel relatively normal again.

at this point i don't think i'll do any other routes, i have a general idea how they all end via spoilers and even if i didn't i think it's too hard to go back at this point. either way the game gave me a lot of good feels but also a lot of shitty ones. reminders of my own berndness and no gf etc. right after i had finished i almost wished i hadn't played it but now that a couple days have past i'm really glad that i did.

i was very skeptical of the merits of the game and even up to act 3 i was scrutinizing the writing and art, i think a lot of people on the internet were until they finished a route and then everything changed. in complete seriousness it's totally altered how i view handicapped people. it's the most humanizing portrayal of the disabled i've ever experienced and a week ago if someone had asked me if i'd ever consider a handicapped gf i'd laugh in their face and say it's a sad story but fuck that. now i could totally and honestly see myself with handicapped gf and feel disgusted at my former self. i remember looking at normal & disabled couples and thinking how the normal persons life must be shit and they're only sticking around out of pity or obligation. i have no such views anymore and i'm ashamed i ever did.

something inside me has fundamentally changed because of this game and for that i can never thank it enough.

What baffles me the most is the people that actually think the game is good. It reads like poorly written fanfiction. The art is atrocious and inconsistent. The music is entirely forgettable. The characters are all gimmick based and have nothing else going for them. Yet people are still giving the game 7, 8, 9, even 10/10. What is wrong with these people? Are they trolling? 4/5 routes done. I don't feel qualified to talk about its quality, but I personally enjoyed most of it so far. Though there are a few flaws that I couldn't really ignore (e.g. unresolved subplots, relationship/sex out of nowhere in a few routes).

I liked Rin's route the most so far, but I also found it emotionally draining.

It'd be nice if /jp/ could actually discuss KS. I don't care what /a/ or /v/ think about it. I still like /jp/ want to know what the people here think about KS, even if we can't take it easy anymore.

if you try really hard to like a game, you'll find that you like a game. The fact that it was "made in /a/", as false as it is, somehow turned into a matter of pride so people pretty much really get into it regardless of the actual quality.

Hanako almost killed me with her cuteness, and it was amusing to have my white knight tendencies flung in my face as being terrible and contrived. Sex scene seemed terribly awkward and mistimed but in hindsight it just emphasized how terrible they both were at relationships, which was the one of the main points of that route.

actually it's disappointingly non-gimmick. deaf girl's deafness stops mattering half way through. blind girl's blindness comes up more often during sex scenes than the plot proper. the only time armless girl's lack of arms matter is when she can't masturbate. only legless girl and burned girl have disabilities that factor into the plot at all, and even then it's just kind of 'eh, whatever'

don't get me wrong, I think the game is on the bad side of mediocre. but the writers took great care to not make it into a gimmick filled story. which is a shame, because it's really just vanilla boring crap otherwise.

Only done Rin's route so far. I think I did notice a little varying quality in the art but overall I thought it was very good and a lot of the CGs were quite beautiful. I loved the writing for Rin's route, just finished going through all the alternate choices and it just feels generally well constructed. Liked the sex scenes too.

Of course it's not an absolute rule, I'm sure there were plenty of people who played a few visual novels and liked the game for what it was all the same. But yeah, I really can't see people who played a lot of games before not noticing the objective technical limits of the game.
As much as I could see, most people just ignore it because it was 4chan made and this somehow is a source of pride for them. It has also nothing of the usual Visual Novel stigma considering it's not japanese and even normal people are playing it due to the hype.

Well I've played a bunch of generic high school VNs but I Liked KS. I mean yeah most of the game was pretty standard fare, but the disability thing made it interesting. I feel harsh for calling it a gimmick originally because I think they handled it well.

The 4LS team made those characters, building around their disabilities and how they affected their lives. Much like real people, they were affected in certain ways by the disabilities they had, as much as they were by their families and upbringings. It doesn't matter when the disabilities were added. If most of the time their only purpose is to be there, it's a gimmick. Don't try to act like they had much importance aside from 'being there'.

Emi: The fact that she has no legs is totally irrelevant. Her story is about coping with loss and letting people come close to her.
Rin: Her having no arms is even less relevant than Emi having no legs. Her story is trying too hard to be deep but it comes down to 'nobody understands me and I don't like it'.
Hanako: Her having 'burn scars' is more relevant than the disabilites of the former two but not much. I say this because unlike those two there is a visibile difference in how she is treated by others because of her disability. She herself however isn't all that affected by it. It may have been the cause of her shyness, but that could have been any traumatic event and not necessarily her disability. Once again her story is about opening up to others.
Lilly: Worst offender of this practice along with Emi. Her being blind has no point whatsoever.
Shizune: Probably the only girl where the disability actually matters. Coincidently also the worst route.

This is exactly how I thought _before_ the release, then I read it and I think this is one of the (few) things they did really well. They didn't "sell out" to the "lulz i wanna fuck her stumps xDD" crowd (although whether this is a good thing is debatable). Plus the characters were very different and recognizable. In fact unless you played their route each character was quite two-dimensional and straightforward, but I guess that's okay because it's a VN.
Besides, the game made a whole point of the disability != character thing. Mukou(?) and Hisao had a pretty nice talk about it in Act 1.

Katawa Shoujo is, while not entirely utter, irredeemable shit, the most disappointing thing since the Star Wars prequels. Before you think I'm trolling, I'm not. I've waited for this game for 4 years, as long or longer than most people in these threads, all the while putting way too much stock in this game. Which is why my feelings of disappointment and emptiness are so greatly amplified. I expected it to be poor, but I didn't expect this.
There are too many things wrong with this game to list in detail here. Some petty, like the inconsistencies in diction, theme and trivial plot points between the different paths that made the game feel shambled. Some major, like its terrible pacing, underwhelming art and poor character development. My biggest complaint about this game, however, is that it doesn't go far enough in any one direction, coming off instead as a thematically stumbling, amateur attempt at literature. Its not H, its not a total melodrama, but nor is it a seriously exploration of any sort of issue or theme. It comes off as a melodrama in denial, thinly veiled as somthing "more". The stories and characters just come off as bland due to the approach the devs took, a blandness made worse by issues of diction, pacing and art.
This blandness could have been avoided by either making KS a moefag pandering melodrama (think Clannad), or making it a literary achievement. This sounds extreme I know, but the ultratasteful, "srs business" approach the game took, with it's thematic emphasis on complex topics like love, self-actualization, and interpersonal relationships, failed precisly because it was written by amateurs and thusly lacked the depth, consitency and thematic integrity needed to make this approach interesting.
Ultimately the "point" of Katawa Shoujo, as with most VNs to achieve some sort of catharsis. The game's inability to illicit an emotional investment, even when it devolves into melodrama, prevents that catharsis.
