Ah, the time has finally come for /jp/ to know I was right all along. This patch is confirmed for a troll. I bet they just gave up months ago and haven't actually edited anything. Has anyone completed the game with this yet? It probably doesn't even translate everything. Sure, they say it wasn't an April fools patch because it wasn't April Fools when they released it, but I'm pretty sure the kids translating it live in a time zone where it's already April. Prepare to get trolled in the butt, /jp/. Hmm, I'm not sure that came out exactly how I had hoped. Sorry, 'Sem.

Is it just me or is Ixwreck slowing up this week? Probably too busy sucking Sheeta's metaphorical cock to translate. Is Ixwreck into femdom? It sure sounds like it. I guess that's lucky for us, though--it just means that his fanclub of English-only peasants (tm) will be stuck reading boring moege from now until JAST releases Sumaga (i.e., forever). You know, the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if Ixrec were a sock puppet created by Moogy to kill fan translation. Someday I bet we'll find out that Aaeru and Fuwanovel were made up as part of that plan, too. Well, good luck to him, I guess. Maybe what this scene needs is a hero brave enough to kill it.

The three main problems with finding an editor are,
a) competency
b) speed
c) dedication
I know for a fact that many projects have been stuck in editing hell, and a fair share of them had their editors disappear. The Irosekai translation project, for example, had its editor disappear from the internet only just recently after serving his term for a little over a month.

The time spent will depend on a number of factors, such as;
a) the length of the lines,
b) how different your writing style is from the translator's,
c) your familiarity with the English language and
d) your experience with editing in general.
That being said, 300 lines an hour is a reasonable speed, with 500 being on the upper end of the spectrum.

>Do they need to speak Jap?
Editors generally don't need to speak moon. One that knows moonrunes will be more likely to preserve meaning or nuances in the script, which might actually cause the script to be more literal than it should. An editor that doesn't know moon is more likely to produce a readable script with beautiful, flowing English—perhaps at the cost of valuable information.

For those of you throwing out suggestions to how a translator should run their project, I suggest that you first try to see how difficult it is to implement those suggestions. Get an editor, you say? A good editor who knows English that sticks around and gets things done in a timely manner is as rare as a translator who does the same. I respect NNL and their position with Minori. As for Gothic Delusion, I believe Cudder was translating that—not that I'm interested in it.

>>8785001
Like I said, open projects generally don't work out very well. Releasing the sources would achieve very little (or nothing at all, for that matter).

>>8785041

Even if you want him to do that, don't use impolite language to try and articulate your point across. It's won't serve much purpose and it wouldn't liken the fact that he would want to release it and most likely, it would be more likely he won't do it.

It's not dick-sucking. It's acting appropriately to get something you want. If you don't want it, you may as well go all the way and full-out bash him. But I'm saying that if your objective is to get him to try and release the scripts, calling him out using "faggots" and "fucktard" won't make it more likely to happen. Otherwise, why care about the issue then if you don't care about the source?

Well, I'm saying if you care about it, you should consider it. Situations like these where it's only source code may be very irrelevant and you may not care if you get it or not but you have other ways of portraying him in a negative light if not opening up source is such a big issue for you.

Again, I don't really care if that's how you act, that's fine by me. But yes, before we get off track, if you feel entitled to the source and you are complaining because he won't release it, I'm sorry to say that you have bigger issues than just the source for this.

>>8785093

True but if you think it may not work for the internet because everything is different, I think that's a very subjective thing to say. Your mileage may vary but personally, if you are to ask me to do something whether on the internet or in real life, I would be much more inclined to do it even with criticism if it was done in a formal and appropriate way rather than how the other anon handled it. If his point is just to bash the other person, then this is irrelevant.

Saged for getting off-track.

Big props to the Never7 team for their great release and making this the best April Fool's Day ever.

Just one thing:

> Volume control
> The PSP soundtrack is louder than the PC version by default, which means that it sometimes gets too loud and drowns out the voice acting. To get around this, we have added an option that allows you to control the volume of the voices and the music, not present in the original.

Does this exist yet in the preview patch? 'Cause if so, I'm not finding it.

Nope, no problem at all. I prefer to fiddle around with the volume controls in all the VNs I play, so I wanted to do that ASAP if it was available, but as it stands it's not really an issue. Even considering how low-fi the voice samples are (to be expected, considering the age of the game), they're still perfectly audible over the music. Thanks for addressing this so quickly though.

By the by, is there a place to submit typos/TL issues and such? Do they go on the error page, or is there another page for them? Or, failing that, is editing the script directly with them allowed providing a note is left?

In fact in examples like
>Particularly using "Chinami is sorry" instead of "I'm sorry" and similar simple phrases just reads ridiculous.
She says quite a few times, literally Chinami is sorry, whcih is the exact same and changing it around just because is stupid.

>From the discussion it seems like she switches speaking in 3rd person and not 3rd person? No?
From what I've played of Hoshimemo so far, no she doesn't. There are times when she doesn't use any pronoun to refer to herself (since in Japanese you very often don't have to use one) but that shouldn't be interpreted as her using "I" in those sentences like someone with a normal speech pattern.

To give a similar example if someone uses "ore" whenever they use a first person pronoun you wouldn't translate any sentences where they drop the pronoun as though they are someone who uses a more polite pronoun like "watashi."

I am sleep deprived and probably did not explain that well at all, but whatever.

I didn't play the game in question, but I'm curious as to the outcome of this discussion since I work as a translator and just recently was in a position where I had to translate a character who similarly refers to herself in the third person.

I ended up going with the "use I sometimes, use third person sometimes" solution. Even though I realize that it doesn't make sense logically for her to switch the way she speaks between sentences, I kind of agree with the Anon who said that making her speak in third person all the time makes her sound too retarded. That's why I eventually decided to use the mix of first and third person.

The problem is that, like many people pointed out, in Japanese it isn't always necessary to use a pronoun, plus it just isn't as retarded sounding to use third person as it is in English. So, a third person character in Japanese may not sound too bad, but if you translate her that way into English, she'll come off like a retard, and lose points with any non Japanese speakers except for the most simple minded fans of retard moe.

That's what I thought, at least. Please respond.

In my opinion:
Using first person all the time but doing other things to make the character's speech more childish > using third person all the time > using a mix of first and third person

Like you said using third person in English is a lot more retarded than it is in Japanese, so if you use third person all the time you aren't conveying the sense of the original text. But if you mix third and first person you still aren't conveying the sense and on top of that you have inconsistency.

>> No.8791811

>>8791782
I did a little bit of work on a VN with a character like that (then realized how much work it was going to be and dropped it before making a project announcement).

I eventually decided to just use "I" all the time, since the other characters never actually brought up the issue directly. If they had, it would have been a more difficult choice. If you're good, you can substitute the third-person pronoun with similarly childish speech patterns in English to maintain the feel of the original script.

That said, I don't think Insemination made a bad choice here, because there's no one right answer. Anyway, it's a stylistic decision, not an error in translation, so those of you who don't know Japanese will just have to learn to deal with the choices like this that translators are forced to make.
