To what extent do Japanese still believe in the old superstitions? Are miko anything more than a summer job?

>> No.9179295

Sounds like cool summer job.

Every country in the world still has priests and so on.

Though Japan does have some superstitions. Like that whole blood type thing, and they seem to be obsessed with horoscopes. Then again, they've become trendy among middle-aged women in the West too.

Mikos are not prostitutes.

Historically "wandering Mikos," the out of work Mikos who didn't belong to temples, sometimes prostituted themselves to survive. But you can't fucking walk up to a Shinto temple and pay one of the Mikos there for sex, so shut up all of you.

Responding to the emergency from /x/.

Japan still does have a good few superstitions that people follow, but it varies from individual to individual. Their beliefs are more eclectic than we have over here, because there is no central text to the religion -it is a practice passed through family or from fragmented or local written records, and so specific rituals are often forgotten and rewritten, altered, varying from shrine to shrine, or completely made anew(as demonstrated by specific blessing rituals for cellphones).

Mikos do usually work only part of the year when they are free, invited back by grandparents to serve at the shrine, but it's not unheard of for some girls to take time out of school or even drop out early to work there more often, often as a front for taking care of elderly shrine priests. Sometimes it is seen as an art, and eccentric businessmen sponsor entire shrines like they would an art gallery.

Any specific questions?

One of my anthropology professors said that the difference between religion and the belief in magic is that magic puts you in control. It gives you the power to tell the future, and put curses on people and so forth. Religion is about submission to some higher power which is why fortune telling and whatnot is seen as sinful, because it expresses a lack of trust in divine providence.

Do Mikos perform divination and curses and whatnot?

They vary. It's really hard to find a good text on japanese sorcery -they're secretive about it and value it as family secrets at best and absolute forbidden knowledge at worst. I've only found one or two examples of real ones(your example isn't one I've heard, strangely) but from what I have seen they're vocal methods to sharpen and focus the mind and emotions, and the spiritual action itself is basically powered by hate and focus("hating someone to death"). Somewhat untrue. There is a lot of overlap. I'm not sure which sects recognize the ability to make a "pact" with the devil. That's mostly from old stories isn't it, it's not a part of the actual theology?

Necromancy probably went through the most iterations and misunderstandings of any spiritual practice or term whatsoever. Most basically, it is a form of sorcery focusing on death and entropy. Go any further than that and you risk stepping on the toes of someone who's named themselves that over the years.

The most recent iteration on necromancy I can find(beyond private eclectic practitioners) is the worship of Senor La Muerte in Southern America, which still pretty much happens. Not necessarily just chatting up the dead, but a range of rituals created to both manipulate and respect the eventuality of death and entropy.

It does acknowledge it. Most religions basically have to some extent. Christianity just can't keep a straight story in regard to witches and such, mostly because the basic christian has no fucking clue what it is or what they're looking at. More than once someone has basically been ostracized from their church for having a picture of the Kabbalah(which can be interpreted as a "road map to what god wants man to be") on his wall.

Aragorn and his ranger pals and all the troops he had gathered from Western Gondor.

That's why Aragorn went through the Paths of the Dead, so that he could gather some portion of Gondor's armies.

See, the film's really emphasized the shortage of man power at Helm's Deep but things were worse at Minas Tirith. Most of Gondor's soldiers were busy protecting the coasts from the incessant raids by the Umbar pirates.

So Aragorn killed two birds with one stone by defeating the corsair armada and gathering soldiers for Minas Tirith's defense.

The whole ghosts at Pelennor Fields thing sucks because it kills what tension the battle had. There was nothing to worry about because Aragorn was coming with his army of invincible killer phantoms. Even without Rohan's help the city of have been saved. It was stupid.

I get the feeling that practitioners of most religions know nothing about what they actually profess to believe.

They do, but that's the problem. They understand everything that is religious but not included in their immediate religious education to be sorcery. That's a really, really huge umbrella.

They're certainly not the unstoppable everything-killers they are in the movies, but I don't think it's ever written that the ghosts are phantoms completely incapable of affecting the material world if you "choose to disbelieve" or however that works.

But yeah, the adaptation's kind of stupid.

It says that their only weapon is terror. They drive people crazy with fear but they're incorporeal so they can't psychically hurt anyone.
