Japan still does have a good few superstitions that people follow, but it varies from individual to individual. Their beliefs are more eclectic than we have over here, because there is no central text to the religion -it is a practice passed through family or from fragmented or local written records, and so specific rituals are often forgotten and rewritten, altered, varying from shrine to shrine, or completely made anew(as demonstrated by specific blessing rituals for cellphones).

Mikos do usually work only part of the year when they are free, invited back by grandparents to serve at the shrine, but it's not unheard of for some girls to take time out of school or even drop out early to work there more often, often as a front for taking care of elderly shrine priests. Sometimes it is seen as an art, and eccentric businessmen sponsor entire shrines like they would an art gallery.

They vary. It's really hard to find a good text on japanese sorcery -they're secretive about it and value it as family secrets at best and absolute forbidden knowledge at worst. I've only found one or two examples of real ones(your example isn't one I've heard, strangely) but from what I have seen they're vocal methods to sharpen and focus the mind and emotions, and the spiritual action itself is basically powered by hate and focus("hating someone to death"). Compare to western ideas of the "evil eye" and modern re-takes on it.

Shrine priests often did know and practice as much as worship, and it's not a rare thing throughout time -even ancient Jewish worship included forms of sorcery. The whole ghosts at Pelennor Fields thing sucks because it kills what tension the battle had. There was nothing to worry about because Aragorn was coming with his army of invincible killer phantoms. Even without Rohan's help the city of have been saved. It was stupid.
