Isn't the fact that an uncut pizza is enough to ruin a person's entire night indicative of something wrong with developed societies in general? That a pen in the wrong place can send another person into a panic attack?

We react like this because we're in this bizarre milieu completely separate from the day-to-day concerns of animals and their basic desires for food, shelter, and sex. Because we don't have to work for much of it and have little or no pride attached to the attainment of these basic desires, our expectations and desires and those of people in less developed countries are so different as to be pointless to compare qualitatively as more or less important in the overall scheme of things.

So of course it's a "first-world problem." But just because it's a first-world problem doesn't mean it's trivial merely because the outcome matters little to basic survival. People in the first-world cherish ridiculously small things like whether a pizza's cut or not in order to feel as if it's worth living in an unrewarding environment that's almost completely unresponsive to their efforts to effect change.

I'm saying the way modern society functions (or dysfunctions) has created this mess where people complain about things like this, where there are whole hosts of mental "disorders," etc. These things are reactions to society as it functions in their own lives, though, not moral weaknesses.

Not really. You're describing the same problem (which is what I meant by your point), but in a different way, as if the problem is more essential to their characters than it is indicative of emotional reactions to the overall way of life in those societies.

You can condemn the first-world as sick in that it disposes people to complain about trivialities, but the reason these things are "first-world problems" is because they are the results of greater problems in post-industrial societies. Comparisons with pre-industrial societies are misleading and pointless because they don't take into account the emotional value of situations in each type of society. The emotional values attached to situations are formed in response to the cultural milieu.

Once again, it's not meaningful to compare a "third-world problem" to a "first-world problem" because one type of problem is more important to survival than the other. Emotionally, the "first-world problem" may be of much greater importance than the "third-world problem." This has little to do with the individual, but more to do with the society the individual belongs to and their ways of coping with that society. That's true of both the first-world and the third-world.
