What are some good visual novels?

I've read some of the basic ones that always get suggested (FSN, That one about bullying and teen pregnancy, the one about the academy for the disabled, one or two others) and I'm looking for something specific:

A VN where you play the dogged niceguy who actively pursues a heroine and gradually win her over. Not, like, "Protagonist arrives in new school/castle/space station and arbitrarily meets 4-7 girls with different hairstyles and temperaments and arbitrarily begins to spend more time with one of them than the others and discovers all about their issues and backstory and before he knows it they've both fallen in love and everything is peachy after some conflict resolution."

I"m talking about "Protagonist arrives in new town/dimension/timeline, meets 4-7 girls, thinks 'Daaamn, that bitch is fine, I'mma make her my lady' and spends the rest of the game actively trying to court her."

Try playing a dating sim game instead of a visual novel.

Also I played one where your little sister dies of a terminal illness after you have sex with her. Holy shit that was depressing. Any that aren't so depressing? And is there, like, a handy infogrpahic that I should be looking at?

Also, how do guys play VNs? I usually only do a few of the routes for the girls that interest me and I don't, like, save before every decision point to see all the different branches. I try to make "in character" decisions and let the chips fall where they may, maybe look up a guide to the good end if I'm sick of bad ends.

I only played a few VN, saved before every choices, and went with my instinct, got the true end of the character I liked the most on the first run, and didn't even finish other routes.

I rarely play VN because I often cry during the drama scenes.

Sounds like the problem you have is you hate common routes but 99% of VNs have common routes because it means they need to do less writing. If you want to actively pursue 1 girl only you're going to have a hard time finding VNs that fit.

are there any that focus on exhibitionism? it doesn't even have to be a taining game with stats, just one where you can force a girl to do lewd things. I tried looking up exhibitionism on vndb but all the games I saw either looked like shit or the only exposure was getting gangbanged in public.

VN recommendation thread?
A lot of people seem to dislike them here in /jp/, but I don't. Everyone has to be a beginner one day, and it gives us an occasion to discuss old VNs.

Anyway, I'll lend you a hand, OP!

- Umineko : BEATRICE = SHANNON = KANON = YASU = KINZO'S CHILD
- Fate Stay Night : Archer is SHIROU IN THE FUTURE
- G-Senjou no Maou : Maou is KYOUSUKE'S BROTHER
- Sharin no Kuni : Houzuki is FAKING his leg injury, Kenichi is FAKING his drug addiction, and Ririko is BEHIND YOU the whole time
- Kara no Shoujo : KUSAKA TATSUHIKO and KATSURAGI SHIN (also known as Mamiya Shinji) are the CULPRITS. Also, Orihime, Tsuzuriko and Toko 2 DIE and you can't do anything about it.
- Kira Kira : Kirari DIES
- Clannad : Nagisa DIES
- Planetarian : Reverie DIES
- Kana Imouto : Kana DIES (well, except in one route BUT THEN SHE LEAVES YOU HAHA)
- Muv-Luv Alt. : Marimo gets her head chomped off, Sumika is the causality conductor and all the heroines DIE
- Little Busters : The whole world is a DREAM and they all DIED in a bus accident save for Riki and Rin
- Tsukihime : KOHAKU is the evil mastermind
- Kikokugai : Your sister is INSANE and a SLUT, and she has a BROTHER COMPLEX
- Yume Miru Kusuri : Nekoko is actually the LIBRARIAN and she's a DRUG-ADDICT
- Symphonic Rain : The rain is an ILLUSION, Ari is in a COMA and Torta is PRETENDING TO BE HER
- Ever17 : Routes don't happen in the same TIMELINE, You is a CLONE, Coco is a GHOST, Tsugumi is the MOTHER of Kid and Sara, Blick Winkel etc... It's too long to spoil everything but I did my best!

DON'T WORRY, I spared the games that would be hurt by spoilers the most. I didn't say a word about the high-suspense plots from masterpieces such as "Wanko to Kurasou" or "Ecchi na Bunny-san wa Kirai". You can still enjoy those stories to their fullest. Thank me!

There are a lot of foreshadowing and monologues that can pass as the usual pantsu jokes or nonsensical fantasies. Knowing Taichi's past beforehand actually makes you appreciate the writing more, since you can see that amost every sentence has a reason to be there.
