There was a mistake with one of the shopkeeper NPCs in the game, who was selling weapons for 21 gold instead of 21,000 gold (I'm assuming somebody typed 21.000 instead of 21,000). If you bought over 40 of these weapons you were temp banned for 72 hours, if you bought over 100 you were permabanned. Some people bought over 1,000. There were over 3,000 permabans and 1,000 temp bans.

There was also another exploit which got a famous Diablo 3 player permabanned, not sure how that worked, something to do with Jalapeno Poppers.

Lots of people are also getting banned for offensive names and saying bad words in chat.

I just want to play games to have fun, and it doesn't sound like I can do that with GW2.

The gameplay is pretty fun. There's a pretty big emphasis on teamwork and positioning.
The PvP is satisfying, and the PvE world is beautiful and quite fun to explore.
The music is what you'd expect from Jeremy Soule. Personally, I think it's better than his Elder Scrolls work.
The grind is pretty non-existant. You can pretty much do what you want and happen to gain a few levels in the process. Skill points can also be gained through challenges, rather than just leveling up.
The community is friendly and helpful, but just as stupid as every other MMO community.
Personally, I can't see myself playing it for more than 6 months (until expansions, maybe) but I say it's definitely worth the 50-70 bucks.

The PvP is fun, if you're into that. And it has no sub, so if you quit, you can come back and play any time. I played GW1 for like 6 years, while taking very long breaks every now and then.

Alone you can do : yaks and the three quagan nodes underwater. Maybe sentinels and 1v1.
two player : all of above and up to 4v2.

If your year is your level it'sd equivalent to level 80 gear, but with level difference, it gets shittier and shittier the bigget it is, even if you gain levels.

Max number of people in a party is 5, you need 100gold to buy the book to create raids so meh.
