It was at this point that this rootless rationalistic Zivilisation had come to exhaust its creative possibilities, and would have to confront “the hard cold facts of a late life . . . Of great painting or great music there can no longer be, for Western people, any question.” The decline of the organic Faustian soul is irreversible

Got into a great chat with a girl about literature, she claimed that "Shakespeare was her crack pipe". When she told me she was fifteen I said I felt like a total pervert because I founder really interesting and was going to ask her out but I didn't realize she was ten years younger than I am. She told me to not be ridiculous, there is nothing illegal about going out. I said okay we can be friends I guess, nothing wrong with that. She said sure so I took her to dinner and the only subject she talked about for the whole time was Shakespeare. Literally every topic I tried to turn the subject to, she brought back to Shakespeare. When I brought up Palestine, she said it was like Macbeth who is lead on to worse and worse by a promise of power until he massacres women and children. When I brought up Trump, she tied it back to Julius Caesar and Henry IV. Even when I brought up tv shows she kept trying to fit it into Shakespeare somehow. Something I realized is that women do not appreciate literature like men do, for itself, they just like to be pretentious and look sophisticated
