Has anyone else read pic related? I thought it was pretty good in a "my grandma probably loved it" kind of way

What is lit's opinion about Pär Lagerkvist? Has someone read his "The Hangman" and "The Dwarf"?

I'm actually currently reading it, about 3/4s done. I enjoy it immensely, some parts have been surprisingly emotional. However it is also quite slow from time to time.

As a swede I can't keep myself from comparing it to Jan Guillou's books about Arn, Knight Templar (which I find vastly inferior). I giggle as I imagine Jan sitting at home, hacking away at his keyboard, imagining himself writing a national epic to rival The Emigrants series and constantly bashfully glancing at Kristin Lavransdatter sitting on the shelf. It's an abstract kind of feel.

Also, speaking about grandma loving it. I had the book on my mental to-read-list for a while but only started reading it when I was home visiting my mother over summer, rummaging through her book shelves looking for something interesting and found a copy. The dust cover was basically disintegrated from wear but the book itself is fine.

Speaking of The Emigrants, this is a casual reminder that the City series by Per Anders Fogelström is superior in every way and deserves to be read more.

I've read both, in Swedish. The Dwarf is very good, The Hangman is alright.

Same, although my mother would probably enjoy it more. It's fine though
