Suttree is more like a case study in McCarthy's gradual development of style. He begins with prose imitative of Faulkner's, then transitions to a more idiosyncratic style of "head-space" writing, and finally graduates to a cogent kind of eloquence that is (somewhat) more like his prose in Blood Meridian. The thing I love best about Suttree is that it is one of the most 'human' novels ever written (by an American). I don't mean that it's sentimental -- it is tinged with sentiment, but it's also an amazing rendering of the internal contradictions and emotional eddies unique to Celtic and Celtic-American peoples. Even in my own country, people don't realize that the traditions of the Old South as codified by the Gothic genre are interwoven -- even to the present day -- with the subtler traditions of the Britons and Celts. The demise and slow death of the antebellum South is a perfect setting for those undercurrents of Celtic melancholy to come alive, and to make themselves known in cryptic ways.
