I feel like you're overexaggerating. Most black churches are very, very, very normal. I think the extreme and weird shit mostly comes out of a deep cultural need to comprehend and situate a history of suffering while simultaneously sort of realizing, to some extent, how typical Christianity tends to be exclusionary, not to mention historically oppressive, of black people: which is how you end up with shit like the Black Israelites. Takes Judaism's cultural center of deep suffering but reformatted to be about black suffering.

What I find most surprising is how Liberation Theology type stuff isn't more popular in the black community.
